mine was spanners by black dog. i remember getting this on cassette from Andys Records in lincoln when it first came out.
at the time, which was 1995 i think, all of my mates were into raves and the like and i used to go along as well. i put it on in the car on the way to one of these raves, everyone looked rather confused at me. i was told to turn it off because it was "undanceable."
what was the first record you purchased of the electronic/idm music thingy?

Aphex Twin - Richard D James album
I still remember what it felt like after i listened to the entire album. Laying there, relaxing and letting Boy/Girl shred through the quiet surroundings in my house.
After hearing that song it was over. I became a huge fan!

cipater was the first track which started to make sense. after that the rest of the album soon followed and i got hooked

My first IDM album was...
...
AE's Peel Session 2 !
It was cheap, and it was just after I read about Thom Yorke linking AE to his Kid A record. It was released in Nov. 2000, just after Kid A I think, so that's why it was easily available in stores. It was alos cheap.
I hated it!

I bought Richard D. James in like 1998. I had a drawing teacher who said the sounds were like a jackhammer dancing on his skull. If I was a throwing out or selling cd kind of guy i probably wouldn't have it now. I could say the same thing about the Pixies "Doolittle" (bought the same week, I think) and now I own every pixies cd there is.

wow.. it's amazing how many people claim RDJ Album as their first IDM purchase. Incidentally, it was mine too. Bought it in either summer of 97 or 98 when me and my cousin were shopping with his mom for school supplies. My cousin bought the Cardigans - First Band on the Moon and I bought Aphex Twin - RDJ LP. What an amazing purchase.. I kinda knew what to expect, but in another way it was completely new. I'll never forget that first listen when the wonderful opening chords of '4' blasted through my Walkman. Ahhh! :)

first was Drukqs, but it didnt get me into IDM music..i just bought it cuz i wanted some different music...later i bought Go Plastic, thinking it was something jazzy..as somone had recommended me Music is Rotted..when i was looking for some fusiony-jazz, and Squarepusher sounded interesting to me..and boy was it a surprise to when i listened to it for the first time...it triggered me to find some other stuff by him..and dloaded a few tracks of Hard Normal Daddy, which blew me away..also about the same time i started to listen to BoC...and here i am..posting stupid posts on some messageboard..and spending a fortune on records...damnit...

For me it was WindowLicker that i heard in a MTV commercial. Then i downloaded that as a MP3, but in 2002 when Druqks came out i bought it. When i first played it i though, wtf? i spent 24¤ on this?. But after a while it did grow on me and now i love it. The next purchase was Go Plastic because the track "Red Hot Car"... 2 years after i have a bunch or records and i'm addicted.
