i kind of consider underworld as being a little more
mainstream than idm artists. along with orbital and the
chem bros.

another thing, why hasnt anyone mentioned 'in a state of
permanent abyss'? perhaps my favorite off this release.

It's awesome. They are awesome.

Rawsome, even.

i really love this album, it's my second favorite behind
ISDN but it's a close second.

"ISDN is their most... percussiv"

Joke of the day! FSOL best album is "accelerator", since
then they haven?t made anything worth listening to (though I
have the limited ISDN and Lifeforms, but they cant really
match accelerator...)

In A State of Permanent Abyss is the little blippy track at
the end of Quagmire... it's nice, but nothing special I
don't think.

Avart - meh. Accelerator's nice, but doesn't match up to the
supremity of Lifeforms and Dead Cities. I prefer it to ISDN,
though.

I agree. Lifeforms needs to be listened in it's entirety.

Re: Dead Cities - it's absolutely incredible.

Don't EVER use the "t" word when referring to FSOL. What
the hell are you talking about? If you're going to liken it
to mainstream, please use the word techno or ambient at
least.

the price is bigger than I could afford at this moment, I
hope I can catch this special edition later

this has been my favorite cd in the last 2 months :)

i wonder if there's anything simple in FSOL at all. compare
the melodies in antique toy, her face forms etc. i'm not a
fan-atic of FSOL but i say THEY KICK ASS. they're able to
use standard, used and [probably] boring instruments in a
new and unique way [-> antique toy again] - this makes them
great for me. innovation, imagination, vision of Cobain
combined with [sound engineering] education and maths of
Dougan - GREAT thing.
guys, FSOL's Dead Cities is already a classic. stop those
blasphemous discussions ;) i wonder what's "mellow hippo"
[their latest release ?] like - haven't heard it yet.

my favourite sample: a child [?] saying MAKE ME BELIEVE I'M
NOT GOING TO DIE

c l a s s i c thing, amen

beautiful album.

and besides, it has some of the best track transitions
ever!

offline obara from Utrecht on 2004-12-11 06:33 [#01422118]
Points: 19368 Status: Lurker

definitely. can anyone show me a good link to listen to
mello hippo [ or some new FSOL stuff ] online ?

offline obara from Utrecht on 2004-12-11 06:40 [#01422120]
Points: 19368 Status: Lurker

song transitions - it's a similar idea to plaid's : mixing
small tracks/transitions with big tracks. that's a good
solution when you feel you might spoil a good melody/idea
making a track/song out of it - sometimes you just make a
good, intense, pretty-sounding 1 minute track instead of a
boring 3-4 minutes long loop. experienced it ? i have :)

The new FSOL stuff is COMPLETELY different to Dead Cities
(it is, in fact, Amorphous Androgynous, not FSOL). Dunno
where there are samples of Mello Hippo at the moment online,
except on the Disenchanted FTP - there's a live version of
Mello Hippo in the 2004 Arvika Live folder.
Oh, and there are samples of The Isness on
futuresoundoflondon.com if you go into the Amorphous
Androgynous section. :)

i really like dead cities, dont listen to it that much
really, i generally stick it on just to listen to 'antique
toy' which is an amazing track

antique toy is a definition of creative use of drum machines
-> the opening melody's awesome

Fuckkkkkk I need to get onto Freeserve and sort out my

thanks : )

hmm, i received Dead Cities today...

i'm a bit deceived - i already had We Have Explosive and My
Kingdom EPs, as well as Lifeforms, and Dead Cities is just
more of the same.... i would probably have found it
excellent if it was my first FSOL album.

More of the same? But but but. Everyone In The World Is
Doing Something Without Me! Max! Quagmire! Vit Drowning!
They don't sound like other FSOL tracks.

Get The Isness. That isn't more of the same. :P

Good old Dead Cities - I like the fact that it isn't
compressed to death. There are actual honest to "Bob"
dynamics!

i have The Isness, i love it. : )

anyway, this is my first listen of Dead Cities so my
impressions are likely to change after some listens... i can
never trust my first impressions.

Heheh, fair enough. I've just always found all of their
records really different... although the WHE and My Kingdom
EPs are from the same sessions, so I get where you're coming
from there.
Dead Cities is worth every penny for 'Glass' alone, anyway.
Track 10. Listen to it on repeat until your ears bleed
honey.

Noticed recently that the We Have Explosive single has 9
different versions on it, some of which are quite different.
I bought it yonks ago because it was $1, but never actually
bothered to look at it. Discogs tells me that loads of their
singles are like this, yay lots of bonus FSLOL listening
experiences

The old Box single (Orbital) was like this two, with 4
versions of the Box one of which had one of the brothers
vocals on it (rare for Orbital yo)

more artists should do shit like this
