please state below your genuine opinion of the music that
is in the 'IDM' / 'Electronica' kind of scene ...

It seems to me there is so much more shit than good these
days ? Am i just too involved now ? Have my expectations got
too high or is it that everyone is a have a go producer now
? i would like to know what people think ... There's still
alot of good shit out there but you definately have to wade
thru alot of bad shit to find it ... and how come there is
so little of this music on the national radio playlists even
tho so much is used on tele (def here in the uk) yet every
pop tune from the radio ends up on tele too ?? is it me or
is there some shit goin on behind the scenes ? i hear tracks
on the radio and the presenter says ... this record is being
released in 2 weeks should be a top 10 ??? i thought we were
supposed to decide that !! by either buying the record or
not ... why don't they play some of the hundreds of tracks
that have actually been released that week for example
instead and see if people like it and want to go buy it ...
i'm sure with the amount of idm influenced shit arnd now
(maddona/radio head/kylie/britney/busta etc etc) people may
actually want to hear this music without some dodge vocals
on it too ... classical was pop once ... and i'm sure more
people preffered that to opera, i def do ...

lemme kno ... i'm confused ...

; )

They do play this stuff on the radio in california....only
at 4 in the morning

That is a hard question to answer though. A lot of my
friends whom ive played this kind of music for think its
just okay but would never go out and buy an album. So I dont
really see it getting radio time...I dont know

i have only two awnsers to this

re have a go producers

everybody has access to software and half decent hardware

re this will be a top ten next week

record companys have deep pockets

admittedly they do play some here late night too but surely
the only reason people like the pop is because they have it
rammed down their throats all day on the radio ... if there
was no radio and to listen to music you had to go and buy it
(no sharing or tv either) how many people would still choose
what's played on the radio over everything else ? that's
what i want to know ...

Radio one pretty much decides the top 40. I know they make a
big thing of their chart being the most impartial as it's
based purely on record sales, but that's rubbish. They pick
what records to support and play, those are the ones most of
the record buying populance hear and subsequently those are
the ones that sell more and chart.

nobs right, any person can try and throw music together but
usually those peoples music are shit. I think the quality
of ones music is reflected upon their love of music in
general...meaning I know people (like those idiots in
american idol) whose want to make music is only for money.
there is no passion or soul behind it therefore it sucks, so
all in all I guess I dont know where im going with this
cool avatar btw nob

peer pressure is the reason for it all!

how do you get peer pressure into listening to music that in
actual fact your not into tho ? it's wierd ... i couldn't
imagine just listening to whatever was on all the time ? i
have to choose ... or is it that not everyone actually does
love music in some form ... i always took it for granted it
was something special to everyone, a small part of all of us
... it's emotion ...

Warp stuff used to chart in the early 90s. I remember
hearing LFO - LFO and Tricky Disco - Tricky Disco on the
chart show as a kid.

I bet almost any genre, short of noise, could dominate the
charts if the big labels and the radio stations agreed to
play/produce mainly that.

My main problem with Pop currently is that rather than
refering to simply popular music (I mean, Beatles and
Hendrix were "popular music") it is a whole new genre that
is sort of "Lite" version of a lot of all other genres- you
get pop-rap, pop-dance, pop-drum and bass etc. all radio
friendly, easy listening versions of what can be very good,
challenging music. Sure, some of it is great- I like
electroclash and I'm partial to some pop drum and bass
(Kosheen, Puretone, etc.), but the dance/house they play on
the radio is generally a poor representation of what the
genre has to offer.

There are suprisingly people that dont like music all that
much, its hard for me to imagine but they really dont care
and will listen to anything that is on the radio

but stop listening to me Ceri hit the nail on the head!

so does that mean that in 10 yrs maybe it will change along
with the management you rekon then ? or shld i just go with
safety in numbers and start doin pop on the side ; )
although to be fair i don't think i could do pop-lite ...

depends how safe you want to be i guess :) what i meant was
that the emotion thing works both ways. on the one hand its
really personal, but then on the other hand, there's bound
to be social influence and what not.

maybe fast food is a better analogy? having said that i love
burgers ??

depends on the day, but in perth RTRFM 92.1 does a show
called full frequency almost every day between 3 and 5 in
the afternoon. they play lots of good stuff.

i hope it does end up going good ... the day i switch on the
radio when i get in my car during daylight hours and here
non pop on a big station (ie. not jazz or classical on their
respective stations) or switch on my tele and get a music
channel with all good videos not just the same crap ones
repeated all day i'll be a very happy (and probably old) man
: ) let's hope the day dawns ...

offline korben dallas from nz on 2004-02-08 05:48 [#01064246]
Points: 4605 Status: Regular

well here they moved the electronic show "parallel universe"
from 11pm-2am to 10pm-1am ... so there's hope :)

maybe its a patience (not quite the right word) thing as
well. but i have some friends that quite like idm/etc. but
generally just consider it "nice background music" etc. etc.

there seems to be a real bubblegum mentality in pop :: 3
chews and all the flavours gone ... and that's a real shame.

true but it's also got alot of shit too ( i think he's kinda
losing it personally an just trys to grab at straws alot but
i don't know that so ... ) but how good would a drivetime or
morning show be ... on your way or bak from work ... or even
an all day one like jazz fm that catered for people who care
rfather than those who don't ...

Ceri is 100% correct!

as regards to American Idol etc.

I'd like to see an IDM version of this, the prize would be
free internet access, for a year with a 6month soulseek
privellages account, a brand new mouse and a pocket word
scrambling device for titles of tracks, it could be called
Bone Idol.

I could say something.... but it's probably already been
said once in this thread.

All I can say is that vocals are the key to this, take
vocals out of these pop productions and it might open
peoples eyes a little bit.

i got one but it would be nice to be able to hear new music
without losing a couple of days a week ... its all i do so i
spend alot of time wading thru shit to find new stuff ... i
listen to most things maybe once or twice then catalogue it
... i have some 3000+ records plus all my cd's mini
discs/dats you name it on top ... it's my whole life ...
there's not much that get's into my permanent playlist ...
but when it does it's there cos i love it ... i need to hear
new music all the time it's just the way i am and i also
think that if the radio would play it then people would buy
it and then the scene would grow and it would benefit
everyone as crap pop would begin to be phased out and we'd
get back to the art of music again ... rather than this
pop-lite culture we are in ... we'd end up with genuine
pop(ular) music ... i do think the internet is a great help
tho !!!!

btw that rant was in reply to ...

buy a car cd-player. it serves you better

good advice tho for those that don't ... and to be fair
there is the occasional pop tune even today that i do like :
) i just don't like the way it's so pre arranged by the big
labels i guess ...

that it seems with many here that if something isn't to

many years of practice it took to be able to produce that

Sometimes I admit it is down to taste, I can accept when a
song isn't to my taste, but I know shit when I hear it. And
it annoys me more that people are conditioned to enjoy it,
then buy it.
