Fantomas - Delirium Cordia

Fantomas (if you are unfamiliar with the band). I
don't think this is too off-topic given the
experimental/electronic collage basis of their new album.

Unlike the previous two Fantomas albums, this one gets
rather distant from metal or rock music in general. Much of
it was assembled by Mike Patton on his personal computer.
Despite this, the production is astounding in terms of
sound-quality and the overall mix, in my opinion. It is one
long track, which may at first seem daunting, but it never
gets boring. Also, it is surprisingly "listenable" despite
the lack of traditional songs. I find it very engrossing
and it is really quite an experience. To me, I felt like I
was hearing the soundtrack to a david lynch/david cronenberg
co-production of a play about surgery where the audience was
being operated on.

I would categorize this as sort of an industrial/soundscape
sort of thing rather than call it rock or metal. Matmos is
given acknowledgement credit, and I wonder if they had
something to do with the surgery sounds that were recorded.

By the way, I'm a hardcore Fantomas fan, and this is an
excellent album that I think is even better than their first
"original" album. Highly recommended. Anyone else heard
it?

Thanks for the recommendation, I have not heard the album as
yet but took a listen on Barnes and Noble to a wee sample of
it and it sounded really promising, really industrial
sounding.

You might want check out his project with John Zorn
Hemophiliac - psycho horn work by John Zorn, dense and
textured electronic atmospheric and percussion, and Pattons
manic vocalising.

yes, hemophiliac is great too - i like that album a lot.
it's quite different from fantomas, of course. i'm into a
lot of patton's stuff - tomahawk, solo recordings, lovage,
his collaborations with zorn, etc.

I love Tomahawk as well. Could you describe lovage's sound,
as it sounds like something I should be checking out :)

well, lovage is distinctly different from most other patton
projects. their album is kind of a concept album designed
to facilitate better love-making. :) it's very
pop-oriented, sexy... it has duets with patton and jennifer
charles, an accomplished singer in her own right. the songs
are kind of built on slow-tempo breakbeats, turntables and
acoustic instruments. i'd recommend it - it's a very good
album.

I downloaded half of it, I've been waiting to get the rest
for so long I may as well just buy it. But I wasn't
impressed, I thought the first Fantomas album was great and
the Directors Cut had some amazing stuff on it but this
sounded distinctly average. Once I've heard the whole thing
I may change my mind but I was very disapointed.

This new album is really interesting. Adam Jones (of Tool)
is also cradited. The artwork and packaging are truely
pieces of art. Is almost feels ambient, definitly a
rainy-day album.

well, as i said, it is completely different from the first
two fantomas albums. you can't really compare them.

and the artwork and packaging really are part of the
experience. it was intended to be almost like a multimedia
package. if you just download it, you won't be getting the
full intended effect. you really have to hold this in your
hands and see the images that go along with it.

I do support Ipecac by buying their albums as well as a few
other labels - I'll probably get it when I get some dosh.
But going on a purely musical standpoint I thought what I
heard was poor, I'm not sure what the status of the other
album is - which is apparently their "pop" record - but I
hope for something a bit better. The t-shirt for this album
is pretty cool - and I don't even wear band shirts.

well, the first fantomas record is like sort of a heavy
metal comic book - fast changes and unexpected stuff
everywhere. it's very good and weird.

their second album, "The Director's Cut" is totally
different. it is reworkings of film soundtracks in a
fantomas style. if you could call any of their albums "pop"
i guess this is close as it gets.

but with the third album, it's a totally new sound again - a
third new direction. you really can't even compare the
three in a traditional sense, even though they all
definitely sound like Fantomas.

i haven't seen the t-shirt yet, i'd love to check that out.

It's better than Patton's solo albums any rate.

"In the spring of 2003 the fellows reconvened in Los Angeles
with Grammy winning producer/engineer (Norah Jones) Husky
Hoskulds, to record the better part of 2 new records with
distinctly different moods. DELIRIUM CORDIA is the first of
these 2 new recordings. The next will come out in the first
half of 2004." (DC was delayed so probably late 2004 now)

I've heard mutterings about this one from Patton in
interviews he said it'll be totally different again.

i've heard that it's going to be in the same style as the
first fantomas record. and indeed, i've heard
previously-unreleased songs when they played live that sound
like the songs off the first record. so i suspect that it
will be sort of like that, but of course, different songs.
