I love this... some people say it sounds cheap and cheesy,
but I think it's great... it really makes the lyrics more of
an extra instrument, rather then the focus of the song,
which is the way I like lyrics to be usually...

Yeah. Mogwai and Pink Floyd have used it to great effect. I
have a VSTi vocoder and it sounds great :D

for instance, I think Cher raised the bar when she used it
in that song... damn, that was nice!

no no NO! i hate how they use vocoder's in mainstream pop.
well, sometimes it's that bad, that it's actually funny. but
still, it's awful

quick

I was listening to Air's Moon Safari album before, which is
why I made this thread... the vocoders on there are cool...

Cher didnt use a vocoder. She used a program called Auto
Tune. Well her producer did.

It's not a Vocoder in the Cher track, that effect is
Autotune turned up full, a REAL vocoder is this.....
here

The first ever one! in the 20's or something! Experimental
IDM music my arse!

I heard the first one was first displayed at some world fair
around the 20's

yeah, the vocoder goes back a ways... I remember we talked
about it in a Popular Music course I did in university... I
forget the details though...

Great to use it for other than vocals. like vocode a drum
track to a synth track. or vocode your dick to a 2-by-4.

I hate gay vocoder. The only instance I can think of that
I've liked it is in Boards - '1969'. And I guess in Bola -
Pae Paoe' it is kind of neat.

Aphex Twin uses a lot of vocoder on ICBYD..

at least that's what it sounds like to me.

that :P

Where are there any voices besides 'come on you slags'?
That doesn't really sound like vocoder...

Nope the one purely on remixing... a load of ninja
tunes/warp artists are in it and it mentioned how the
vocoder-like effect on Cher's comeback song was done :)

I will preorder peff's one tommorow probably as I've got to
go to town anyway.

Those voices on ICBYD are the preset voices that you get on
a mac text to speech program.

Not just for voices.
like in Ventolin, i think he has the Bass Drum vocoded to
the Screeching. because of the way the screeching sound
gets tweeked by every bass hit.

offline evolume from seattle (United States) on 2004-02-05 17:24 [#01061456]
Points: 10965 Status: Regular

anyway, i use vocodor a LOT but i hardly ever use it on
voices. mostly on synths and drums.
i got the idea one day while smoking buds and listening to
ICBYD because that what it sounded like to me.

I like using a breakbeat as the modulator for long held
notes/chords on a synth pad.

offline evolume from seattle (United States) on 2004-02-05 17:29 [#01061462]
Points: 10965 Status: Regular

one example: i have always theorized, that much of the
confusion about whether the voice is saying "come on you
slags!" and "I want sex" is because it is both of those
phrases, vocoded against eachother. i've done tricks like
that easily with a vocoder.

but yo. that's just what it sounds like to me. i never
chatted with RDJ about or nothing.

yeah word, that's what i'm talking about. it's how i did a
lot of the noises in my track "blip hop" that shit was
almost all vocoder tricks.

i don't think i have that track online though, it's on the
EP i've been giving out.
