Dark Tower Appreciation Thread

Just finished reading the fifth book, Wolves of The Calla,
just a few days ago and this series still blows my mind.
Anyone else reading them? If not, I strongly recommend you
do. I need to read the revised edition of the Gunslinger - I
heard they added quite a bit, but did not subtract from the
original.

So, who's reading it? Favourite character (other than
Roland)? Favourite book? Favourite moment? eh? eh? eh?

Character: Eddie Dean
Book: Drawing of the Three (though I really love them all)
Moment: Defeating Blaine the Mono

There is in fact a large thread about the series which you
have in fact posted in, but never mind...

I was not impressed with the revised Gunslinger, and I
consider it inferior to the original.

Character: Roland
Book: Wizard And Glass
Moment: "Kill if you will but command me nothing!"

oh yes, its all i've been reading for the last few months!
I'm currently half way though Wizard and Glass'.

Character: Bert

Book: Possibly Wizard and Glass though i haven't finnished
it yet. Drawing of the Three is my fave so far I think.

Moment: There have been so many!

*Spoilers*
I always like the scenes with the Lobstrosities.
The gunfighting in the first town in Gunslinger was pretty
good.
The scenes with the dumb police men at the end of drawing of
the three.
Suzanah getting it on with the Demon :)
Blain the mono, when the walls of the train dissapear.
*spoilers*

"I can be descreet, sai," he said. "As for propriety? I'm
amazed you even know the word"

Roland, while he's dancing with Susan.

those first... and then I want to read The Hitchhikers Guide
to the Universe... I'll read them sometime though I guess!

"Like the scorpion said to the maiden as she lay dying, 'You
knowed I was poison when you picked me up.'"

err, i've been in the middle of the wastelands for MONTHS --
i really enjoyed the gunslinger, and drawing of the three
was a real page turner, but for some reason i can't get
myself to pick this one back up. last time i did, i got to
the part where suzannah gets filled out by the demon, and i
was astounded with how much i didn't like that
part...thought it was soooooo dumb...but i WILL get through
it, because i have a feeling it can only pick back up on
track.

alfred: yes there is, 30 extra pages from what i hear,
spread throughout the book. supposedly aludes to more things
correctly than the first book did, and aludes to connections
in other king books too.

what role do you think Hearts of Atlantis will have on the
dark tower...

heh, i was completely amazed when it alluded to the dark
tower in the beginning

yeh, i just borrowed this thing last night from glasse. i
was shocked when i opened it up and saw the title "low men
in yellow coats", and flipped through it and saw a drawing
of the crimson king's eye. i knew it tied in, but this seems
like it ties in pretty tight. i have to read this & black
house from what i hear.

some wisdom from the mouth of eddie dean:

roland: "do you know what ka means, eddie?"
eddie: "i know if you say it twice you get the baby word for
shit."

ah eddie and his utter hilarity.

Well, following a link called "BOOK 6 PLOT DETAILS" was
hardly the wisest thing to do was it??! :D

492 pages for the next one, then the last book about the
same probably, although hopefully longer. King's works vary
in quality as much as their length but my top 5 books by him
all exceed 750 pages

Ah don't worry - that did not ruin that much for you.

btw, tibbar thanks for that link - i realized my mom owns
everything's eventual, so i'll take a long at that and learn
a bit about the crimson king.

he's a kid, but my impression was always that eddie's humor,
like his life in the past, was a kind of bad joke.

You know the part at the end with the thing with words that
Callahan freaks out over(don't wanna post spoilers). I saw
that shit coming when I read the prolouge on the internet
way before the book came out. I'm so smart.

anyone heard of 'the road to the dark tower', its meant to
be a critical analysis of the dark tower series. Not sure
how thats possible as there are still 2 books to go.

*spoilers*

i'm a little worried to see Rolands health deteriorate, i
mean, arthiritis? First his fingers, now this... will he
even be alble to do whats required at the dark tower? Hell,
there isn't even a guarentee he'll get there.

*spoilers*

i think in a long series like this you have to have
continuing conflicts. Roland has always been the badass of
the series - other characters have been leaning less and
less on him, which i think will make for some interesting
twists later in the series.

I was amazed at the beginning of DT2, when he got his
fingers bitten off, because I considered it practically
sacriligeous - now with the introduction of the dry twist I
think it's to show that Roland's long life is still
realistic and grounded in reality, much like that character.
- In the moving on of the world he inhabits he's quested
after the dark tower for more than a thousand years, due to
the softening of time and his travelling - it cannot be
without consequence or he'd be infallible and the tower
would be perhaps too realistic a target.

I tend to keep an open mind with each book of this series, I
have faith that King will pull out all the stops, and leave
everyone satisfied. Or it'll be the biggest inside joke of
all time...

'Salem's Lot
The Stand
Insomnia
Hearts In Atlantis
Black House
Everything's Eventual (the title story)
From A Buick Eight (less essential)

You can also connect Eyes Of The Dragon, Rose Madder,
Desperation, The Regulators, Bag Of Bones and The Plant, but
these connections have no bearing on the main story and
yield no new information.
