okay, you see one day my HP CD-R drive just stopped
reading/writing discs, so i figure it's burnt out, and i
purchase a new CD-RW (52x/24x/52x), from Dell, .....
and I install it all right and gently put the cables in to
their positions, and when I turn on the computer, it does
NOT detect any other drive whatsoever......i've tried
reconnecting the cables like 5 times, and everything.....i'm
on the last straw here....
could it be the cable itself?, anyone know anything to
help??
this really sucks and i cant burn cd's anymore.

Have you checked that it is set up/detected in the bios?

I went to System in the Control Panel, where my other
DVD-ROM drive is listed,.....
it won't detect it no matter what. I refresh and refresh
and reconnect the cables and everything.
I'm just gonna have to take it to the computer shop. This
happens everytime. It's so simple yet I can never manage to
get it to work for ME.

You can try the following before you spend any money.

Turn off your pc and connect the cd drive. Make sure that
the power and data cables are plugged in well to the drive
and to the motherboard.

Turn on your pc, right at the beginning when the momory is
being checked press DELETE.

This will take you into the bios configurator.

Choose the 'Standard CMOS Features' Option

Where it says ...

> IDE
> IDE
> IDE
> IDE

YOU should see your hard disk listed as well as any other
dvd/cd drives you have in there.

If there are some entries that say [NONE] then change them
to say Auto Detect. Leave the others alone.

Now press ESC and exit the bios making sure to save your
changes.

Your pc should now restart. See if it has detected our new
drive now.

The first thing you should have checked where the jumper
settings on the drive and make sure it was set to Slave or
whatever you wanted it set to.

its the bios settings. i can't tell you anymore because all
bioses are different. just hunt it down.

The BIOS is the last thing to start pissing about with, most
IDE drives are auto detected by the BIOS, if it is not set
to auto detect then it should be.

Check the jumper settings on both drives on the IDE line.

ok, i figured it out. my DVD-ROM drive is serving as the
secondary slave, and the jumper settings on the new CD-RW
were on slave also. So, they were overriding each other. I
changed it to master, and the computer recognizes a DRIVE D:
and E:, but to no avail,.....it knows a CD is in there when
i put one in,.....but it cant play them,....and it can't
open applications or programs on cd, (treats them as a
single audio track?!?)....i'm still stuck, why can't i have
a CD-RW???

and sometimes, ...i'd say every fourth/fifth restart,....it
won't even recognize both drives at all,...and says my
secondary IDE controller is a conflicting resource in the
Device Manager.....
so i restart, and voila , it notices them both, but the
CD-RW can still not play/load cd's......

Remove the DVD-ROM from the line and see whether you can get
it working with just the CD-RW.

If the CD-RW then works we can set about sorting the other
problem out.

Yeah motherfucker...I was the only one who was right...you

Oh and just so the BIOS monkeys know, Windows XP takes very
little notice of the BIOS anyway (by that I mean in most
cases it completely ignores it and relys on it's own
hardware detection).
