i thought there was talk of batman one which gave backstory on the whole plot, and was suposed to be really dark.

this sounds like it's just going to be another in the series.

Yeah the director of Memento and Insomnia, Christopher Nolan is to be the director.

i think it actually looks pretty cool. They are starting over from the begining, retelling the story of Batman's origins. It will take place shortly after Batman: Year One so i suppose it will be loosely based on the Frank Miller Batman graphic novels.

  lots of info here

what would be really nice would be if the batman films hadn't happened at all.. and that they were about to kick off now, serial style from the start.
they wouldn't be put out hollywood-conveyor-belt-style with changing actors, silly fads, inconsistencies in scenario + 1960s burt-ward-batman oneliners.. there would be an overall concept, sticking closely to best of the graphic novels.
they could get tim burton to direct (as i thought his visual stylistics were the best things about the batman films he did) but get a really tight script/screenplay writer in to make sure that the film is watertight as far as plot + dialogue are concerned.. they could give each film a different feel by emplying different directors (as they have).. but the writing team would stay the same to make sure the backbone of the films remained constant - instead of just degenerating into a string of loosly associated summer blockbusters.

  mmmm..
  what could have been..

I was hoping Darron Arronsky(sp, Pi and Req for A Dream Guy) was gonna direct it. But the memento guy is not too shabby. The Pi guy actually did a lot of preliminary screenplay work with Frank Miller which I guess is all out the window now. Have you guys seen the new Catwoman trailer? Its so fucking lame.

Halle Berry's Catwoman costume is the most hideous and unsexy thing I've ever seen. I remember jerking it to Michelle Pheiffer, and she wasn't even showing a hint of skin. That's how hot it was.

i said few because ive honestly lost count of this sad runaway-train franchise now.
i lost interest after the first two.. which were the best (primarily because of tim burton's visual + atmospheric flair) ..but they could have had tighter scripts. in my opinion.

They could've been better certainly, but they weren't gigantic messes. And Batman had Jack Nicholson in for crying out loud.

i thought nicholson was a horrible joker.
not at all how i imagine him from reading the books.
it was just nicholson doing his charming yet irrational thing.

and he doesnt have the right physical presence at all for that character.

and burton really threw some cheesy lines out there too.

same here man... i dont know if they could EVER nail that. the character is so explosive and tensed all the time, youd almost have to cast a horribly insane psychopath just to play him.

Well I was never into the comic books or whatever existed before the Tim Burton film, so I was pleased with Jack Nicholson as the joker. I thought it was perfect really.

the joker is much darker and creepier and sadistic in the books.

  and he looks totally demented

some info i found at Darkhorizons.com:
Variety ran an article today with heaps of new details on the upcoming "Batman" movie set to begin shooting at the end of the month in Iceland.

First off expect this Bats to be grounded more in reality which is why there's no costumed villains, little focus on gadgets, and a bigger role for Bruce Wayne - Director Chris Nolan says "I felt like doing the origins story of the character, which is a story that's never been told before. The world of Batman is that of grounded reality, ours will be a recognizable, contemporary reality against which an extraordinary heroic figure arises".

Helping that reality is Gotham City which won't be the stylised version we've seen in the Burton/Schumacher films, rather most of it will be on-location work in New York & London which will be assembled together to reinvent Gotham as a modern day metropolis - "Gotham will seem like this great city in a contemporary world and will be created through various cities, we are trying to avoid a villagey feel for Gotham, as it starts to get claustrophobic".

Expect the marketing angle to call this a re-imagining of the Batman franchise - WB Production Pres Jeff Robinov says "It's almost impossible to reinvent Batman, Chris is reintroducing Batman, and it feels smart and cool and fresh. That's no
disrespect to the other movies, but it's really Chris' vision of Batman, and that's what we're supporting".

Nolan's vision as such sounds interesting - "Few superheroes have the sense of purpose and destiny that Batman has. He is driven by an incredible sense of rage,
sadness and grief because of the tragedy of his parents' murder at an early
age. To me, Batman is the most interesting superhero because he doesn't have
any superpowers. He is very human".
Backed with a $150 million budget, and a new musical theme, expect this psychologically deep and conflicted movie not to be too dark thankfully.
