I just bought a plaid cd the other day, double figure, and I sort of have mixed feelings about it so far....
Most of the tracks are very good. It seems to me that they have almost a "classical" ear in the way that they make the tracks and the harmonies and stuff...
But I think "Assault on Precinct Zero" gets a little off sounding halfway through and I hate the way the tracks progresses.
The next part of the album is excellent, but after New Family comes Zala, and it just seems so chaotic and eerie, which doesn't really suit the album at all, and it frustrates me.
"Twin Home" does nothing for me either. and I don't really find "Manyme" the greatest closer track like some ppl think it is...
Am I whinging, or do I just not like Plaid?
help!!

Plaid are okay in a polite sort of way, as Blackdog they were pretty inspirational.

I really gotta be in the mood for plaid... otherwise they just float over my head, and not in a good way. They actually grow off me, i used to like them more than i do now. Still love the odd track tho (tophapy, spudink, scoobs in columbia).

Caustic window is really primal, less of the cerebral, or maybe more? I get more from music when it actually moves me in some way than a programming technique that I know, or I know I'll know, y' know.

Is Dial P available at the moment or was it just available as a pre-order item with Spokes?

Spokes did grow a bit on me, i liked it more at 2nd listen than at 1st - it's a good idm album, just not very "Plaid-y"! =)
i liked Double Figure on first listen.
Not For Threes still is my favourite...
well in general it depends on the tracks, some need to grow on you, some are instant... i thought Double Figure was pretty instant though.
but maybe it depends! after all i also liked Confield on first listen ' _ ' whereas i needed time for I Care Because You Do... (well ok i was already used to Autechre when i listened to Confield, and not that much used to idm in general when i heard ICBYD)

Atli > i think it isn't available anymore now... you could still get it shortly after the release of Spokes, but not for that long. it was a limited edition.
i don't think you're missing that much though : ) (contrary to what other people say... Dial P is a nice bonus, but not essential - i prefer hearing the tracks in the albums or alone than in the big mix, it made them lose of their impact...)

Yeah, DialP is pretty crap. Anything else Plaid is awesome.
And yes, I did find Double Figure to be a grower as an album.

my favourite plaid album is rest proof clockwork, so far. double figure is brilliant, too (my first plaid album :-))
spokes disappointed me a little at the beginning, now i like it more, but it is still one of the weakest they have ever released, imo

i dont like double figure very much, nor spokes.
i think that black dog/plaid peaked with bytes and totb, with each following album getting progressively worse and annoying.
but thats my feeling on their stuff.

nice to see some people backing up spokes for a change. lately all ive been hearing is bashing. from fans, media, anyone. to me its one of their strongest works in terms of melodic progression (ie interesting chord progressions and lots of dissonance that hasnt been on other plaid albums) and technically find it a bit more deep than other plaid, though i do like other plaid a lot. honestly i didnt think much of double figure. clunky, fuzzy, some very cheesey and not well done melodic progressions (least to me), and after "sincetta" it takes a huge fucking nose dive. i still do love certain tracks on the album, but back in 2001 when i first heard it i was very disappointed. but, thats just me of course.
only problem i found with spokes is its consistancy with sound. before plaid used to be slightly all over the place in terms of mood/style, but still kept it in the realms of their own sound. spokes departed from this, all the tracks are quite samey to me in general with a more straightfoward and possibly simplier structure approach, though they are quite different in structure, just not as blatant as the past.
in any case, i dont think you can pin down whether plaid grows on you or not. back in 1999 when i first heard not for threes i was immediately hooked into it. and since then ive been a big plaid fan. but there are a lot of people who dont like it, or as this thread is proof of, think after ken split from the group plaid went downhill.
heard it all. just all depends of course. stuff and things
