Mainstream Attitude.

It surprises me how people on Xltronic just never seem to
admit to liking anything mainstream at all... I find this
hard to believe, and I think that half the people just say
they hate certain things so they'll look cool on the
board... which would be really pathetic if they actually did
that...

...I don't know, does anyone else agree?

I do... in fact, that seems, strangely enough, just like
something I said to you one time! ;)

it's almost like people are afraid to admit they like
mainstream music, cause if they do, their credibility is
shot...

what mainstream...?

britney mainstream?
pop mainstream?
top of the pops mainstream?

the first is shite,
the next two are ok in a car-ride, but to listen it at home,
not really...

I disagree, I have in the past named a number of
"mainstream" songs I like, including but not limited to
Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Travis, Coldplay,
Radiohead, Gloworm, Prodigy...the list goes on and on.

Hmmm, I don't mind this when it involves poppy artists in
the Britney or Justin legion.
But I hate it if people slag off bands like Air or Daftpunk
or people like Mike Oldfield or Jean Michel Jarre just to
look cool.
Mind you, if you really hate them, then fair enough!

I listen to mostly classic or timeless rock from the 60's
and 70's. We have two of those stations where i live and i
find it to be a blessing!

Next i really enjoy hardcore metal and punk.

After that it's IDM and braindance type of shit. Which i am
starting to slightly lose interest in sometimes.

I don't know what it is but i like just about every Justin
Timberlake song, and I'm really getting into the newer
Britney and Christina stuff, especially when maddonna is
involved.

I listen to whatever the hell I want, whether it's
mainstream or not. I couldn't possibly care less about
whether or not people will think I'm cool. Life is too short
for childish bullshit like that.

well, I don't listen to Justin Timberlake at all because I
think he in particular sucks, but I don't have anything
against the idea of "mainstream". if the music sucks, I
don't like it, plain and simple.

Nah, I like some pop music. A lot of it is gash, but
there's something good in almost every genre.

Over ten people have DLed Kylie Minogue - Slow off me on SS.
I think that shows "IDM fans" do tend to like other stuff
too.

i don't know if they are actually mainstream but i like:

björk, radiohead, cardigans (okay cardigans are definitely
:D), norah jones, underworld etc.

i think listening to mainstream is okay, if the music is
actually good, and not uninspirated or just empty trash

i think there are some people who express liks/dislikes
based on a perception of what is "cool," but i think they're
few in number here.

it seems to me that the dearth of discussion about so-called
mainstream music on xltronic is due to the website's focus
on electronic music, which is generally not particularly
commercial/widespread popular.

i imagine there's someone on a justin timberlake message
board right now, wondering why more posters don't admit to
liking aphex twin.

as long as the aesthetic experience of music is influenced
by belief in "quality" as an objective feature of music
there will exist fashion trends and pretenders...

not that there's anything wrong with that.

i am sometimes sad, when good not so popular music all of a
sudden comes to the focus of the media, and they show the
musician frequently on tv or play his songs on radio more
than enough... you are full then

The fact that they're so astronomically popular is a
millstone around their beautiful and uber-creative necks.

As far as top 40 I have to admit to liking that cover of
It's My Life by No Doubt.

Mainstream music was just better in times past. It seemed
like after the early 90s music kind of split and the
underground became huge and mainstream finally went
corporate beyond the point of no return. Before that there
was more good music in the mainstream.

rather than deny that i don't like mainstream things and
cite a handful of decent danceable singles that i like
(Kylie songs, some JT, certain pop-hop,etc.)... which, when
you put it into context, would come out as a ratio along the
lines of 1,000 non-mainstream songs to 1 mainstream song...
i'm just going to say that the reason i don't listen to
mainstream music is that it is to focused on being easy to
assimilate... if you spat out the same math equation over
and over again, would you expect me to clap after the
1,000,000th time? what about the 1,000,071st time? the
reason why i obsess over obscure things is not because they
are obscure, but because the nature of the market is such
that things that are difficult or different are generally
pushed to the periphery in favour of easily accessible,
easily markertable entertainment... on the occasions that i
do enjoy mainstream pop, there usually something about it
that roughens (to borrow a formalist term... not to be a
snob, but because i think formalism makes a lot of sense i
many circumstances) my perception of an otherwise easily
assimilable song... in the case of Kylie... i find her
sexual presence captivating, a far cry from your typical
starlet, whom i won't deny that i often find sexy, whose
voice has a sincerity of emotion that i don't think you can
attribute to most manufactured starlets... and when i speak
of my affection for Kylie, i'm only really speaking about a
handful of songs in which the music compliments the vocal
(or vice versa) in just the right way... when i really like
a straight up hip hop jam, there has to be something about
the beat that seperates it from your standard fare (maybe
texture, maybe even just a less common chord progression...
depends)... but this is precisely what the mainstream is
looking for: standard fare and a marketable personality...
there's only room for so many freaks in pop... why do
"hipsters" like Missy? because Timbaland's beatscapes are
interesting... it takes more than a bar to sort them out...
on top o

of this Missy rhymes around the beat in an unconventional
manner... that she rose to the top is a sheer fluke... that
she will stay there, at least for a little while, despite
continued experimentation, has to do with the fact that
people don't necessarily always want entertainment over
art... if you commit yourself to understanding something
(particularly something such as missy, which is, while
challenging, not nearly as challenging as listening to
Stockhausen... nor am i insinuating that it should be, or
that i prefer stockhausen, cause i don't...) there is a
decent chance that you will enjoy it in the end... but it's
not the business of the majors to take chances on artsy when
it requires more time investment on the part of a culture
that is obsessed with efficiency
