put your fist through the monitor... smash the screen to
bits... if you can't see the error messages, they must be
gone!

42 running processes? i can only assune you have a lot of
agent clogging up your systray. do you really need to have
these all loaded up when you bot up your computer? go
through them and check. these may well eat up valuable ram
and slow the computer down somewhat.

offline tolstoyed from the ocean on 2004-01-28 20:04 [#01052821]
Points: 50073 Status: Moderator

i wish i knew what you're saying...i know nothing about no
processes, agent cloggings...i think im gonna call one of my
buddies over to deal with this, he's pretty good with this.
anyway, im deleting those 600+ files as we speak...i hope
that's ok :)

offline The_Funkmaster from St. John's (Canada) on 2004-01-28 20:10 [#01052825]

I guess 42 running processes would mean 42 running
programs... which would definitely slow things down...

i meant agents. software sometimes sets itself up so its,
ahem, "easier" to lead up because its already in memory from
the start of your session. check your systray! how many
icons do you have in there? for example do you really need
real player to load up when you switch your computer on? the
answer is probably not

i see...no there isn't much there.

anyway i finished scanning with this ad-ware and there are
this 600 files that i should probably get rid off...the
thing is there's only quarantine option and no delete...so
hmm, what do i do?

delete them. i think ad-aware makes a backup but you won't
need it.

have you run spybot aswell?

yes! spybot will pick up things that adaware will miss, and
visa-versa. i run both at least once a week, together with
NAV.

it looks much better now...looks like lot of that shite has
been deleted. i have a problem with ad-aware tho, it looks
like there's so much stuff that needs to be deleted that
ad-aware simply can't manage...but it's freakin 6 am and i
should go to work in like 3 hours so i'll continue this
tomorrow.
thanks a lot for your help though!!!

if you want to have a running pc, you should switch to
linux. linux is free, you can run it, without removing
windows from your harddisk (some software you may use is not
available on linux). btw, linux is becoming more and more
user-friendly, so switch to it, switch to it... do it! :-) I
wanna switch too, but i want a separate harddisk for each
OS, so i'm saving money to buy a disk, what is difficult to
do, if you spend most of your money for music :D

what you can do, to protect your windows pc is to install a
firewall (zonealarm for example?), anti-virus software
(anti-vir for example?), run ad-aware on start up or make an
entry to your schedule-tasker (???) of windows, to run
ad-aware every tuesday for example, in order to keep the
performance on your pc you wish. i would also change the
browser. mozilla is much better, and more comfortable than
internet explorer. in addition to that it has less bugs than
ie, and it can show you almost all websites as good as
internet explorer (at least!) there is only one website i
cannot see with mozilla, because it is made for internet
explorer only! this is a exception, though!

all in all:

- install linux on your pc beside windows xp
- install a firewall, anti-virus software, and scan your
harddisk for ad-ware with ad-aware and spybot seach &
destroy
- use mozilla instead of ie.

btw: xp anti-spy is also useful programm. there you can
switch off some agents of xp you are not interested in. this
gives you also some performance. i am too lazy to look for
links, but you can find easy if you google, and type the
name of the software and download

hope this helped you :-)

since i cleaned it up. i also installed norton internet
security and i checked for viruses (i had something like 60
infected files - i now deleted most of them and clean the
others), i haven't restarted my computer in 2 days :)

I get mad with my PC at times, and it usually results in a
reformat to fix the issue :(

to do that it would take me at least 4 hours and i don't
have patience for doing that...i didn't reformat in like 2
years now and i hope it will work for a few more months :)
