Silent Hill Movie Soundtrack

I was browsing the IMDB and found a post on Silent Hill
where someone said they should have Evanescence do the
soundtrack for the movie. So... any better suggestions?

Yeah, Coil.

Godspeed You Black Emperor! would be one of my first choices
I think and maybe Sigur Ros?

Others:

Trent Reznor, Angelo Badalamenti, Aphex Twin

It seems that some people want Yamaoka to do it. He did the
game OSTs.

I personally don't think it would be wise to put any pop
music in there, otherwise its going to be like a damn music
video.

Just some good old fashioned mellow scary shit. Maybe even
Nurse With Wound. Though its unlikely...

Yeah, i would definately go for Akira Yamaoka myself. Hope
he ends up doing it.

Just thought it would be a good discussion, seeing what
other artists would be able to create the dark atmospere
required for Silent Hill. Maybe someone will mention someone
I haven't heard of that I could check out :)

If Hollywood has their way, probably Korn or Marilyn Manson
will be doing the OST...

i wouldn't call Sigur Ros, GSYBE! popular. I think Trent
Reznor could easily make a perfect Silent Hill soundtrack...

damn, I wish he'd hurry up and release something!

well the director seems like a decent choice, thank god Paul
Anderson is doing Resident Evil 2.

Hahaha, yeah, that Paul Anderson, I'd swear that Vincent
Gallo dissed on him in an interview, but then again, who
doesn't he dis on?

As for Sigur Ros, I think they kind of a pop band trying to
be electronica. I'm not sure if their stuff is dark enough.

Aphex could definitly make an awesome OST for it if he uses
the same methods for SAW II.

I've never heard anything from GSYBE.

I'm feeling a Yamaoka/AFX collaboration. I dunno how it
would turn out, but all I know is it would scare my s0x0rs
off!

Evanescence would be fucking awful. That band is so boring
and she sounds like she should be singing for a Folgers ad.

I think if there has to be a goddamned movie, Yamaoka
should do it. People who would be interesting though, would
be Aphex Twin (think flex soundtrack), definitely
Angelo Badalamenti, certain Swans material would work I
think.

I agree, Evanescence sucks ass, all their songs sound the
same, and that girl's voice (which is for some reason is
highly acclaimed) gets annoying after 1 song.

Fuck everyone. No Evanescence, no Coil, no anything. Leave
it to Akira Yamaoka. A Silent Hill movie could easily become
a horrid fiasco with no context, like the Resident Evil
movie.

Yes, exactly.

Actually, Kenji Kawai would be good, as well. He helped out
with something in the audio department on Silent Hill 3,
can't remember what, though. He's done the Ghost in the
Shell and Ringu soundtracks, which are both really nice.

You probably haven't heard Coil if you don't think they
could make a good OST for it.

Also Chris Vrenna could probably do a good job.

Kenji Kawai is excelent too, cost me a fortune to get hold
of the Ghost in the Shell soundtrack, was worth it though.

im with ophecks. silent hill wouldnt be silent hill without
akira yamaoka. i saw that thread on imdb and was laughing a
lot. nobody else would get it right, he's an essential part
to the experience of the game.

i dont care about afx or coil, despite them being good, what
have they got to do with silent hill? nothing. id rather
have a soundtrack that actually pretains to the movie and
games style instead of just stupid licensing deals for more
peopular artists to gain attention. not saying coil wouldnt
do a terrible job, theyd probably do a good job, but coil
hasnt worked on the sound design for any silent hill game.
and akira has done all three, and produced the entire game
of the last. he's essential.

im such a picky bastard on this issue though. but my mind is
made up: akira yamaoka

Well the way the film industry is, don't expect it to be
done by Yamaoka, take Final Fantasy: Spirits Within for
example, the music was done by Elliot Goldenthal rather than
Nobuo Uematsu who is famous for doing the FF sountracks.

"i dont care about afx or coil, despite them being good,

An ability to create the kind of music needed?

I doubt that Yamaoka will do it, not cause he wouldn't agree
to it, just cause a room full of dickheads will decide
against it, they will probably pick some typical person who
has never made anything that stands out, to make some half
assed OST. Which in tern will kill the mood of the movie.

Maybe I think to highly of AFX but I'm confident he'd be
able to bang out one hell of a soundtrack. it may not sound
exactly like the game, but you all know it would be
retarded awesome, admit it.

yeah it would be awsome, but it wouldnt be what it called
for, youre overlooking the fact that these artists have
never reproduced anything like what this guy does for these
games, plain and simple. i think it would just try to be a
"cool" factor, not a "good" factor.

and besides, I really dont want them to make Silent Hill
movie, moslty because I doubt they can make it as scary as
the games. end of story.

I disagree, SAW II sounds fairly close to the music in those
games.

and why does the music have to EXACTLY the same as the
games?

For me, it just has to be a good, dark, scary ambient
soundtrack which most of the artists mentioned in this
thread are capable of.

Maybe I'm exagerrating, I've only played Silent Hill 2...
and I've remembered it sounding like SAW II.

The music basically has to fit in with a dark creepy dream,
no cheesy orchestral crap.

If they can't get Yamaoka, RDJ is the man for the job!

has to be the same music, dont fix it if its not broken
right? .

i hate fanboys and their narrow minds,

tree
grey stripe
spots

tracks from SAW II that are very similar to Yamaoka's work,
like it or not, other people could make just as awesome a
soundtrack as Yakaoka.

pantalaimon: whatever, those songs are amazing, but they
arent silent hill, I think if you gave other artists to do a
silent hill themed soundtrack they would just distort it to
their version of silent hill, i dont want that. blasphemy.

"it has to be the same music,"

not at all, it just has to be similar... how do you even
know Yamaoka would make it exactly the same as the games?
Maybe he has other ideas for the kind of sound he wants for
a Silent Hill movie?

whatever, dont be a fuckin goof just beacuse you love AFX or
any other artist, your the fanboy you want someone you like
to make it cause it would be "cool", not good or the
best..... its stupid to think that they would do a better
job that the guy whos been doing it for 3 games, and I own
all three of those soundtracks and they are scarier than any
release by any aritst ive ever owned or listened to, so why
the flying fuck would I want someone else to do it?

Okay, here is the thing, Yamaoka is not going to be picked

"its stupid to think that they would do a better

i never said it would be better, just that other artists
could possibly make a soundtrack as good as Yamaoka.

"and I own
all three of those soundtracks and they are scarier than any

release by any aritst ive ever owned or listened to, so why

the flying fuck would I want someone else to do it?"

fair enough, I have to admit the one thing he has is a
proven track record. His tracks for Silent Hill are
terrifying, I agree.

pantalaoimon: im not trying to fight you, your cool... yes.
indeed... but Im just trying to say that I doubt it would
work out as nice as if he just did it himself as all the
other works, I love these ambient and IDM artists that
would probably get to do it, but they wouldnt have the
experience, they wouldt have the heart and soul to put into
it... it just wouldnt be the same.

I've heard most of what they've done, and they're awesome,
but I'm not interested. I get a different feel out of Silent
Hill than I do listening to Coil. Plus there's the poppy but
unobtrusive trip-hop in those games that I'd miss if someone
else did the soundtrack, and did it wrong.

Silent Hill is way more than ''SAW TOO'' and ambient
soundscapes. There's a feel and mix there that RDJ has not
come anywhere near... I don't mean in quality, just in
style. And Coil... no, just no. I don't even mind those gay
rock songs from 3, and the drastically increased trip hop
content, it still holds together. And the last thing I want
for this movie is some mixed soundtrack, I want it to flow.
