read good reviews of exhibitionist. not that that's
conclusive proof.
whats his production work like?

friend of mine runs a deephouse focused music mag + is
sorting tickets for an exclusive mills set (5hrs i think) in
london sometime later this month.
am thinking about going along..

yes, it's mostly straight 4/4 rhythm and very minimalistic,
but he can do more with his minimalism than most of other
arist who try and make it sound complicated...he's just
brilliant at what he does, and i love most of his albums a
LOT!

btw, 15.000 :)

[seems obvious from my avatar] but im really into richie
hawtin's work. i love the subtlety of that minimal techno
sound. its less obvious, but theres as much going on as any
afx, squarepusher, autechre etc track.. and i like a lot of
the old detroit classics too. what do you reckon i'll make
of mills?
(im not familiar enough with his work to have made up my
mind yet - ive heard it as part of other djs sets, but not
knowingly)
any particular records/mixes youd recommend?

hmm, i hear he's been playing a lot of house-tech lately,
which im not really into, but it can easilly happen that
he'll play some hard minimal stuff, so if it isn't too
unconvenient for you i'd definitely recommend you to go.
check his set from sonar last year (is you can find it), it
will give you pretty much of an idea of what to expect.

as for his albums, i totally love "art of connecting" - one
of my all time favourites

and im not particulary fond of hawtin's stuff, kind od too
mellow...but i love the stuff he's releasing as plastikman -
he's brilliant.
btw, he was playing at sonar last year as well. ofcourse afx
was better then both :)

im not that impressed with tech-house myself.
whenever ive been to a tech-house night, ive felt as though
the music is trying too hard to be overly complex.
just ends up sounding crowded - loses that
smooth/fluid/naturalist feel that there is in the kind of
techno i like.

i checked the last clark's album (which eartleakage
recommended), and it isn't all that good. i like minimalism
and there's just too much going on in clark's music, not my
thing really.

the plastikman releases are my favourite hawtin lps.
but there are some good fuse tracks too.
& i like the fuse lfo collaboration.

but, for me, plastikman is the most moving experience -
musically.

i don't listen to tech-house either, not my thing. but
pretty much every dj who used to play techno minimal is now
into tech house, tho mills's set from sonar 03 is pretty
hard techno, so try and get that.

actually i only have plastikman's latest two releases and i
love them both, so minimalistic but soo intense it makes my
brain itchy :)

cool.
thanks for the pointers.
if i go to the jeff mills night in london (which i should
really as its cheap to go thanks to the mag + mills is
generally regarded as a must-see dj) i'll let you know how
it was.

there dont seem to be a great number of people on xlt who
like the minimal thing as much as other electronica or even
drum+bass (all of which i love too) so i'll look you up next
time i want to discuss this kind of thing.

right .. its freezing here in this room + im tired so im off
to bed.
laters.

yeah - theyre both great albums (the first two parts of the
2nd trilogy)
try going back to part one of the first (sheet one).. its
more lush sounding, as the plastikman records have become
gradually more & more minimal/rhythmic with each release.

look fwd to seeing what the next installment is like in a
few years.. its such a stripped-down sound already.

i agree.
still - it does require a whole different listening approach
to appreciate its subtleties.
my girlfriends still swears its repetitive..

i doubt she'll be coming to mills with me.

night (again)

You've got to go acrid, he'll play some records that'll
change you life if you haven't heard him play before. Have
you seen Ritchie play many times? At the moment he plays
what could be classified as 'tech-house' it's still nice if
you're out though, it's definately not cheese nonsense.

Mills has got the funk + electronics, if you don't go I
won't talk to you ever again...

its a shame you didn't like the new DK album, i think he's
proved a point that he's not just a one trick pony. millsy
(as i affectionately like to call him) is a techno master.

waveform transmission anyone? :)
