I don't know what other peoples opinions are but after
listening to One Word Extinguisher for the first time today
I'm a bit disappointed, I mean lets face it, it's not great
is it, & does he actually have any die hard fans here on the
board?

i disagree; i like prefuse73, for what i know the guy is
alone; one word extinguisher wasn't that good but i really
liked vocal studies and uprock narratives

I really liked Vocal Studies, but I wasn't too impressed
with the new one.

It's a nice sound he makes, it's just that it's the only
sound he makes.

it is.

he's releasing a new ep through warp under the alias
savath+savalas. he collaborates with tortoise + local
spanish musicians (apparently he's left atlanta to live in
spain)
lp's called 'apropa't'

don't pay much attention to reviews myself. only ever use
them as incredibly loose guidelines (much prefer to hear it
+ make my own mind up) .. but the one review i have seen
didnt seem particularly impressed with it. and they liked
his previous releases.

i didnt enjoy it that much on first listens. after 10
times, i found it pretty good, but not as good as everyone
seems to say.

outtakes is better. prefuse has the skills.

crazone, I will take a listen to vocal studies and uprock
narratives soon.

Zeus, I will try it through my speakers tomorrow as these
sennheisers of mine sound very clinical which is good for
listening to tiny details but not really for getting a good
overall sound.

think his stuff on OWE is worthy of the publicity it has
recieved & if it is, how come I'm not signed?........ apart
from the fact that my stuff hasn't left my pc

I loved vocal studies but his newest album seems to
incorporate alot of the current rap "sounds" so to speak
which made me sell it after two weeks.

Neither Autechre nor Prefuse 73 are overrated. They both
deserve all the credit they get, which is just as much as
they deserve in this case.

Scott Herren is underrated if anything....

Like it or not, but he has what it takes to bring that style
of music into the mainstream.

before i rea the rest of this thread... i'd just like to say
fuck no! and if you ain't feelin' it i feel sorry for
you...

plus even if you didn't like his prefuse stuff you can
always fall back on his gorgeous downtempo (Delarosa and
Asora) or his beautiful spanish folk music (Savath and
Savalas)

offline DeadEight from vancouver (Canada) on 2004-01-26 22:37 [#01050225]

and a few things:

how can he be unoriginal if absolutely nothing replicates
the prefuse sound?
if he were a one trick pony he'd still be rehashing vocal
studies (which doesn't have the same musical flow... the
glitches aren't entirely at his command at that point, imo)
the only resemblance it bears to current hip hop is that
it's more synth based than sample based... what he does with
it is a million times more interesting, and vital
sounding... (of course all he uses is a sampler... by
sample-based i mean it's not some 5 second sample looped...)

I think One Word Extinguisher is overrated, "End of Biters -
International" is great, but it's the only really killer
track IMO. The "Extingusihed" Outtakes are great though.
Cheap too.

i bought vocal studies and found it so boring that i wont
buy anything of his again...then again i am a fan of sample
based hip hop rather than this sort. vsaun makes no sense to
me, its just meaningless sounds and annoying beats...there
are a lot of artists and music i dislike but very few i find
annoying to listen to and prefuse is one of them.

Talking of sample based hip hop, the new fatman scoop track
is great, it has the old "Woo-yeah!" sample in it. Nice to
hear that on the radio after all these years.

that last fatman scoop single was awful in my opinion..

..it could (just about) work if you were in an club + he was
there, hyping the crowd in the flesh - but outside of that
context it just sounds terrible + amateurish.

I like him a lot. It really helps to have a taste for
hip-hop to enjoy it to the fullest. And yeah, repeated
listens help, I had a little trouble getting in touch with
his style but now yeah.

it's such a stupid term...

Be Faithful I did like purely because his voice was so
annoying it became funny, in the sort of way when a pitch
gets so high you can't hear it so you don't mind. It made me
smile when it came on the radio because I could just imagine
thousands of people around the country angrily turning it
off.

This new track though is abysmal... sure it might be
nicely nostalgic to hear the 'woo-yeah' sample again but
shit...

...listen to The Illness by Kid606 instead!
