Nintendo has announced the launch of a double-screened handheld gaming gadget, codenamed Nintendo DS.
Nintendo said it would give gamers "a unique entertainment experience for the 21st century."
The three-inch screens are held in the palm and are supposed to give players two different views of a game.
It is due to hit the global gaming world by Christmas 2004, and more details are expected at May's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3).
Change of perspective
"We have developed Nintendo DS based upon a completely different concept from existing game devices," said Satoru Iwata, Nintendo president.
As such, it is not meant to be a successor to its highly successful GameBoy Advance, which already dominates the handheld gaming market.
There are no pictures of the device yet, but the gaming gadget is expected to be demonstrated at E3 in Los Angeles.
The GameBoy Advance dominates the handheld market It will have separate processors and up to 1Gb of memory.
The TFT LCD screens on the temporarily named Nintendo DS are about the same size as the GBA displays and can be held separately. They are designed to allow players to focus on different characters or parts of the game.
By keeping an eye on each screen, gamers will be able to play without interruption when they wish to change what they want to see.
In a fighting game, for instance, players can shift from what the character is doing on one screen to a map of the environment on the other.
Nintendo will develop game titles for its new gadget, but it is also in discussions with third party game developers around the world.
The GameBoy Advance and GameBoy Advance SP had a good year in 2003, with a 33% increase on sales from the previous year.
But other big names are due to hit the handheld market in the coming year, including Sony, which plans to launch its PSP handheld by the end of 2004.
Nintendo said it was also working on successors to the GameBoy Advance and GameCube

The idea of having two screens is interesting in term of game design. Now the gaming industry is so much focused on 'entertainement' vs 'game play' ; I don't expect the games to be ground-breaking. Most likely some animated/pre-rendered screens on top-screen and the actual game screen below. Well you will maybe have the possibility to look at your opponent's screen if you play vs games or have a world-map for strategy games...

Yes, I was going to say, this is old news, we had these back in the 80s.
I predict a flop, Virtual Boy stylee. Your casual gamer tends not to like "gimmicky" systems...

This sounds fun!
If they make it powerful enough you could do some great stealth games with it. Using the second screen for viewing cameras you've setup :D

the design of it (the iQue) is weird... not Nintendo-like...
about that Gameboy DS, i'm just a little pissed with all those new portable Nintendo systems coming out every two or three years ' _ '
i'd have bought a GBA SP if it wasn't that expensive (and i don't know if it's that ergonomic with this little size and itty-bitty L and R triggers, though i like the design of the machine a lot... ^^)

They said that the two screens were just one of the big features. I'm sure it will conect to the Cube and probably the Advance and SP.
I hate we have to wait until E3 to get any details.

Ceri got one for his original GBA (not SP) and he got it online from a company called Liksang, if I recall. I'll email him this thread, and he can post a bit more about it. Although the one he bought doesn't fit the GBA SP, 'cos of a plastic lip on it. They do, do others and much better ones now......so I'll get Ceri to post the info you need.

"This is it, the 'thing' they've all been talking about - a brand new dual-screen Nintendo handheld console! Two screens!
The rumours and continuing speculation over Nintendo's big new hardware announcement can finally be put to bed, as they've revealed details for a brand new handheld console - with two TFT LCD screens. Going under the codename Nintendo DS, this brand new portable handheld will feature two separate 3" TFT LCD display panels, along with separate processors and semiconductor memory of up to 1GB. The Nintendo DS is scheduled to launch worldwide before the end of 2004 - this means there'll be a full-scale handheld war between the NDS and the Sony PSP.
Nintendo big cheese Saturo Iwata elaborates: "We have developed Nintendo DS based upon a completely different concept from existing game devices in order to provide players with a unique entertainment experience for the 21st century." You can't argue with that - innovation, thy name is Nintendo. The console will be fully revealed at E3 in May this year so hopefully we'll be able to see our first glimpse of what the NDS has to offer. The screens will be backlit and flushed vertically together, one above the other.
So exactly what benefit will having two separate screens give you? According to Nintendo's press release, this'll allow you to manage your game progress from two different perspectives. Example - you're playing an RPG, and instead of pausing the game to access the World Map, it's right there on the other screen. Likewise your inventory. Another example - you're playing the latest Metal Gear Solid game, and rather than have the radar taking up valuable space, it's beeping away happily on its own screen. The Nintendo DS could open a wealth of possibilities for game designers - gamers will now be able to manage two lots of game info at once.
But does this mean goodbye Game Boy? At present it's not clear whether the Nintendo DS is being prepped as a successor to the GBA, but the press release made it clear that

But does this mean goodbye Game Boy? At present it's not clear whether the Nintendo DS is being prepped as a successor to the GBA, but the press release made it clear that it would be marketed separately from existing Nintendo products. It's difficult to tell where the NDS will lie in the grand scheme of things without a good look under its bonnet. If the two products are to co-exist on the market, then we're looking at two possibilities; either the NDS is a superior machine and the GBA SP will suffer a price drop, or the GBA SP will continue to be Nintendo's handheld of choice while the NDS takes the role of a budget model, offering innovative gaming to the masses. Something to ponder indeed.
Nintendo have been putting the feelers out for the Nintendo DS, and are already holding discussions with third-party developers about complementing their own first-party software. While the announcement itself was little more than an thinly-shaded outline of what to expect, the Nintendo DS could revolutionise the way we think about handheld gaming and the possibilities are potentially massive. Quite how a dual-screen handheld will look we're currently unsure, and the aesthetics of such a beast boggle the mind. We can see two sets of visuals flashing concurrently becoming something of a headache, and perhaps a concern for the World Epilepsy Council. But then, even the PSP has potential design flaws.
Things are interesting again. Nintendo have responded to the claims that Sony's multi-functional PSP would be the final nail in their coffin with something that is exciting, intriguing and genuinely original. Whether or not Nintendo will still be fighting their cause in ten years time is still up for debate, but one thing's for sure - at least they're fighting."
My main problem with it stems from the fact that with a handheld, you're likely to be using it on a bus/train or whatever. If the screens are seperate, you may not be able to attach the screen you're not holding -presumably, (most of) the co

(most of) the controls will be on one screen- to anything or balance it in sight. It's hard enough using a GBA SP as the PDA in GC/GBA link up Splinter Cell, where you have the luxury of a big screen that is not attached to the controller and also tables/ stools etc. to put the GBA on.
Hopefully, nintendo will do something genius to rectify this potential problem.
On the subject of handhelds, the N-gauge doesn't seem to be taking, despite its flashy marketing, does it?
