dance needs its punk

anybody else feel dance has reached a piont where it needs
a good kick up the arse
in the 60/70 prog rock was predominant in rock music and
then along came punk, the mudane norm that prog rock had
become was overturned, punk was like a beacon to those who
wanted more

i dunno i just feel dance has got that mundane part of the
cycle, it needs its 'punk' moment
things will come for dance as we know as its still an infant
in comparison to rock music (rock having been about 50 years
or there about)

discuss

It's SO hard to be shocking now. I mean, we've heard
everything. I can't possibly imagine something coming along
to inject enough new life into music to revolutionize the
way rock did in the '50s and punk in the mid-late '70s. The
whole shock factor was a big part of it, the style was as
important as the substance.

It doesn't need to 'Shock', it's a big shift in focus that
Rock 'n' Roll and Punk achieved, people trying to shock is
OLD

I agree in that we probably won't see many more musical
revolutions, as it seems that electronica has pushed the
envelope to it's limit. Still though, you never know what is
going to happen or what will be considered music 100 years
from now.

dance has had several "punks" over the years... and music
won't stop progressing just because we can't fathom where it
can go from here....

It doesn't really NEED to and I wish it didn't have to, but
I think it WILL have to. Otherwise, nobody will really give
a shit, and everything will just be segregated into their
own little crawlspaces like they are now. But I'm just
theorizing, I hope something huge happens soon.

Though I guess every little movement is huge to SOMEBODY,
and that's all that matters.

The whole mp3/anyone can make music thing is quite punk, if
you're waiting for a hairstyle, and a uniform...

right, I'mm off for a lemon merangue

i think most of the electronic music discussed here is alot
more "punk" in its significance/purpose than most of the
current shit-pop-rock bands that call themselves "punk."

we're on the cusp of a massive neo-hippie diy
counter-movement, which will (and is) manifest(ing) itself
in every artistic fashion possible

offline manifestevil from Australia on 2004-01-21 19:58 [#01043532]

seriously tho.
i think raves were the modern punk show.
completely diy and put on by the kids with no regard for the
law.
But as far as shocking audiences like the pistols or say g.g
allin i don't know how much of that happens.
I do take a punk approach, if u can call it that, i was born
into punk rock and not too many years back was still sportin
the leather jacket, studs mowhawk etc and playin in a punk
band. Without goin into too much about whatit was to be a
punk, i think its still part of me and as lot of others that
were/ are punks that discovered electro.
punks played music relative to the time and we are in a
digital age so naturally the music will reflect that.
So to a degree some of us are still punks....

And on the topic of shock, i'm still hoping to send a punter
catatonic from witnessing me dissembowel myself on stage.

be careful not to wear "punk" as a badge.. it sort of
defeats the object (surely?)

and shocking people is easy.. and not a very smart thing to
do, unless you have some intellect to back it up. shock for
shock's sake is a bit of a shabby tactic in my opinion. it
doesnt stay fresh or funny for long.

Without getting into the punk anarchy thing, which seems to
be either dead or just silly these days ....
when i think of the "punk" era and especially punk concerts,
i think of high energy, adrelin-rushed, angry, scarey
mashups. You get these at Rephlex/warp gigs my friend.

Squarepusher - Dublin 2002
The guy kept us waiting for half an hour before he came on
and then he launched a massive sonnic wave of drill on our
asses, shouting as he went, before fucking us right up with
Cmon my Selector. He's a punk with a beard!

RDJ - Sonar2001
- pure angrey hellsounds via jungle/gabba/noise/whitehouse
screaming...... dance music does NOT get more punk than
that

Kid 606 with DJ Ruppture - Dublin, summer 2003 Ragga jungle
cutup sound-fisting. It was well ardcore...

Local Dublin outfit "Undermine" are a great young punk/dnb
band with punk leanings.

Its happening man!

yay!
you seem to be thinking along the same lines as me
mr.keyfumbler.
its not about safety pins & style over content.. its all
about the music*

*cliché, i know.

by the way - i see youre from dublin. im coming over to your
fair city in february for my birthday. was wondering if you
could recommend me any shops (record or otherwise), bars,
clubs, sights, sounds i should check out.
unfortunately, my birthday falls on a tuesday this year - so
im going to be in dublin mon-weds [not the best time of week
for sampling a city's nightlife] as a local im sure you can
recommend a few ways in which to spend my time that i
probably won't find booklets about at the tourist
information centre..?

the way i see it youre asking for dance to get bad and rough
.. which it has!

this depends on whether you classify the stuff we listen to
as being dance

"this depends on whether you classify the stuff we listen to

I don't. Some of it is "danceable" but I probably wouldn't
try it anyway.

Yes, when most people think of dance, they actually think of
the pop dance stuff you get on the radio and in gash
nightclubs.

i ahte the term idm its crap and will not use it other than
to degrade it

what i mean with this whole thing is, not for
techno/dance/whatever to become more punk like, i mean a
revolution in style that punk gave to its time
something different, something new
