CASINO VERSUS JAPAN - Hitori + Kaiso: 1998 - 2001 on
attacknine records, same label as freescha in the us.

there's also a 7" split on a new label called "frank wobbly
and sons," a new track by casino vs japan called "silver and
gold" on one side and "64 colors" from am-boy's debut album
"floridian." limited to 250 copies, i think...

am-boy is reminiscent of boc, cvsj, freescha as well, but
leans more towards the lofi. recommended.

no track listing, but the write up at www.darlashop.com
says:

"Casino Versus Japan's fourth full length release, brings
together 30 previously unreleased tracks from Milwaukee's
Erik Kowalski, on California's Attacknine Records."

so this release is a collection of older material. i wish
there was a rerelease of the first album. i think there
will also be an album of brand new material this fall...

i never really enjoyed casino vs japan. for those looking
for very ambient music it is still a recommendation worth
though.

i wouldn't consider cvsj ambient, really, any more than i
would consider boc ambient.

though he's been called a ripoff of boc, i think that's a
lazy mischaracterization typical of review sites such as
pitchfork. what makes cvsj so special is his instantly
recognizable and individual sound.

it won't please the people that like very technical music,
but if you like sparkling, pulsating melodies with soft
beats then you will be more than pleased. it's very warm,
tactile, sensual and sometimes playful music.

sample his album "whole numbers play the basics" for a
taste.

I have both FEW 001 and FEW 002. the 1st one is great,
awesome CVSJ track. few 002 blows donkey nuts. its like
indie rock! way different than signaldrifts other stuff.
ULTRA limited stuff. its a series of 6 45's, each limited to
250 copies.

the second one's a-side("nothing much to lose") is a cover
of a track by my bloody valentine. haven't heard it,
though.

i'm very much looking forward to that cvsj 7"!

i have go hawaii and whole numbers play the basics. i have
no idea what any tracks are called on these two albums. in
fact i am terrible with track names in general.

Great album - the cover art really describes the sound
visually - flecks of paint floating in space jelly around
and between dali monkey bars.

i ordered the new cvsj album from darlashop twelve days ago,
since that seemed the most cost effective domestic option
(the attacknine site wasn't working at the time), and
although darla says that priority mail should arrive in 2-4
days, i still haven't gotten the cd.

i wouldn't recommend darlashop to anyone, a few years ago
they took my payment for an order, then told me that one of
my items was out of stock but kept the money and would not
return the money. then they stopped replying to my email
inquiries. maybe i shouldn't have ended the boycott...

i think they are just really slow. i ordered it about five
days ago from darlashop (thank you for the info by the way
on where to get it) and they haven't even taken the money
out yet for it. i work at a bank where my accounts are at so
i can check daily to see if things have gone through. that's
pretty crap though that they took your money.

offline plaidzebra from so long, xlt on 2004-02-08 15:12 [#01064808]

i finally got the album, apparently it was mispressed
initially (no explanation of what the problem was tho) and
delayed for that reason. of course, darla didn't
communicate this to me until i emailed asking where my order
was. anyway, if you get the album you'll find that disc A
(printed on the disc itself) is disc two (as printed on the
sleeve) and disc B is disc one.

as you might expect the music sounds mostly like lesser
tracks, experiments, outtakes and such from 1998-2001,
nothing especially great but if you like cvsj you will
probably like it. not nearly as good as "whole numbers play
the basics" but it's been growing on me...

like "if more people voted bush wouldn't be in office" with
out using those words?

it's got some C vs J in it

funny how they'll play cvsj on mtv, but only as background
in a promo or something. fortunately, i don't receive mtv.
i like the sound of that promo though. like father, like
son: one term!

the best cvsj, in my opinion, is "whole numbers play the
basics."

btw, the cvsj/freescha split cd was just released on
wobblyhead...

i think it's coming out on vinyl, too...
