ive just started getting into programming with python and
in my travels have just stumled accross a soulseek client
for linux/unixsys and mac.

not sure how reliable it is, but i thought id point it out.

go here to find out more.

yeah, there are three soulseek clients for mac:

· PySlsk (the one you indicated), which requires unix
knowledge and i don't know what kind of weird terminal
twiddling etc... (i was too afraid to try, there was a
guide here but the site seems to be dead)
· SoulseekX, which is on pre-alpha version (and will
probably not reach version 1.0 before soulseek is shot down
by the RIAA) and just doesn't work (doesn't even install!)
for me
· SoleSeek, which is in devlopement and not released yet...

ah...ok i wasnt aware you peeps already knew about it. cant
see why it would need unix knowledge though.

anywho...

Alex, the developer of PySlsk, is no longer doing feature
updates on a regular basis. He'll still do bugfixes and
updates to match changes in the protocol, but isn't devoting
as much time to it as he has in the past.

Another client that works well for me is Nicotine, found
here. It's based off of the PySlsk code, but with
a cleaner interface and more features.

Conclusion: Use Windows instead?

hepburnenthorpe > well, if you manage to make it work... ' _
'
i personally don't know anything about it and i can't use
it.

Ganymede > how do you use it?

eXXailon > no.
like i would pay 1000+ euros and learn how to use an OS i
don't like, just to use a p2p software that will die in the
future because of the RIAA anyway... =P

Alfred: both PySlsk and Nicotine were originally written for
Linux and only later brought over to Mac OS X.

uzim: you'll still need the software called Fink, which
makes it easier to use Unix/Linux based programs on OS X. I
also use a program called FinkCommander, which gives a GUI
to the normally console-based Fink. These two programs
handle all the picky details of making sure that everything
gets installed in the right places.

To give you any more specific instructions, I would need to
know more about the details of which ver of OS X you're
running, etc.

Anyway, once nicotine (or pyslsk, for that matter) is
installed, to run it you simply open up a program from Apple
called X11, which handles GUIs for Unix programs, and then
either type "nicotine" or "pyslsk" from a command line *or*
you can put them on a menu of frequently used programs that
you can click and select from.

From there, things are pretty self-explanatory, I think.

why would you have to pay ¤1000+?
and what's there to learn about windows?
windows xp is one of the easiest-to-use things ever created
by mankind.

and once again, mac users get the shaft when it comes to
P2P.

PySlsk is made with python. its just a programming language.
you dont need to know anything about it to use PySlsk
though.
