Does anybody use it?
Is it worth buying? 100$
Give me some opinions about it.

i use 4.0... i'd pay $100 for it if i had too, so yeah, it
is well worth it

What about usage and sound? Does it uses vst/vsti/dx/dxi?

Yes, supports all those. Not a bad sequencer at all. Sound
is fine- it has a bad reputation because it's so easy (and
available on P2P) that you get a lot of dross made with it
that use the notoriously bad default samples.

I'd be hesitant to use it live (although the live mode is
pretty good) as it's nowhere as stable as Ableton live or
Reason, although in fairness that may be due to a cracked
copy or the VSTs I use.

Reading that back it sounds like I'm being luke warm about
it... I'm not; I really like it and it's the main thing I
use to sequence tracks (aside from ableton live).

Plus points:

Nice clear UI.
Very fast for "sketching" tracks.
Not just limited to loop/sample based music (as the name
might suggest)- it has good midi implementation too.
Good instrument state files - lets you save patches for vst
synths etc. that lack them built in.
Lots of people here use it- handy for remixing.
The fact that you can load up VSTs means you can do all your
mastering in the program.

The only other real downside I forgot to mention:

The "in program" wav editing stuff is a bit weak- I'd
combine it with something like soundforge or wavelab to get
the most out of it.

What is the knobs/faders resolution, e.g. in Reason we have
7bits [2^7=128], and it is little...

I just got FL 4 studio yesterday off of slsk, and none of
the drum samples seem to play (which must be due to my
cracked version)... I am thinking of actually buying it
though because I have always liked fruity loops (used to
have 3.4 hacked that always worked perfectly).

I bought in recently after using a cracked version for over
2 years and I must say that it runs very stable. it's worth
the 100$. really it is.

I find it's solid as a rock. I don't use any of the included
instruments or patches though - they're kinda crappy. But
aside from that it's an excellent sequencer / VSTi / DXi
host. And the builtin sampler channel is okay unless you
want to stretch or pitchbend. And the granulizer is neat for
making weird autechre-y sounds.

Not sure what the resolution of the knobs is but it must be
fairly high - you can ctrl-click with the mouse to get finer
adjustments and they don't sound "steppy" when I tweak them
with my doepfer pocket controller (box of knobs).

Which brings me to the next point - there is no program that
is easier to automate or map to physical controllers. Also
to make your channels interact with one another with tools
like the peak controller. And the formula controller is a
real hoot to automate with. Sometimes I do things like map
one knob to a channel's volume, and map another one to the
same knob with the values inverted, so I can fade one sound
and bring another in with one movement. And if you start
doing that with effects parameters... whoa.

The only drawback is you have to export in 32 bit format and
render to 16 bit in something like wavelab, otherwise your
final product doesn't sound exactly like your live mix.

I just love it to death! If you have your own pile of
samples and VSTis and VSTs, you will too - again, expect the
included samples and patches to be not so hot.

Well worth the very reasonable amount they're asking. Make
sure to get the producer edition so you can record audio
with an ASIO-capable card.

do you use any external hardware synths or do you use all

generator/master controller, this option is well accomodated
for, correct?

well if you want to use any hardware maybe you should
consider something else. because FL isn't made to controle
your hardware with.BUT you can use FL studio as a vsti in
cubase or logic. so you can make your beats in fl and import
fl in cubase anf use cubase to controle yout yamaha ex5

I know Junktion has used floops to control his hardware
synths and is a fan of the fruity dashboard (lets you build
an on screen midi map representation to help make automation
clearer).

Fleetmouse: Where's the invert value thing for midi
automation? Sounds handy being able to x-fade...

I don't know anything about fruityloops hardly... so you can
download different instrument files, and then use them in
FL? How would you do this, and where would you get them?

You can use several things:

either VSTis (basically software based synths/drum machines
or effects boxes) to "play" notes.

It's compatible with soundfonts (which are collections of
multisampled instruments).

Fruity loop/drum synth sample files (do not use the
default samples! :P)

Wav Files

or DXi files.

Those first two mentioned are common to most decent
sequencers and as a result there are a lot of them out
there.

Have you made music before?

im telling you people, project5 is the daddy of all software
based studios.

i use fruity as a vsti inside of project5.

best of both worlds. + project5 is rewire compatible...so,
in essence, if you wished, you could write a trak using
project5/fruity/reason all working together.

I use a Roland RS-5 as a controller - it's velocity
sensitive and whatnot, doesn't have weighted keys but I love
the touch anyway. I run the MIDI in/out and audio out from
the keyboard into FL Studio for my piano and electric piano
sounds. I don't see why you couldn't use any hardware with
it - as long as yopu have enough audio inputs on your sound
card, or a mixer -

The one small annoyance with FL and MIDI hardware is it
can't record and play back sysex commands to set up your
hardware's voices and such - I use a free utility called
Midi-OX for that.

Project5 sounds intriguing - does it support VST and VSTis
natively, or does it have to put a DXi wrapper around them?
In the past that has screwed with my hardware controllers
and automation...

Fleetmouse, this playing with the curves using equations is
awesome... I knew floops featured it, but I thought it was
only as a sort of lfo alternative- not curce control for
midi in. Man, I'd love a hardware scratch mixer that
hooked up to a pc and let you upload fader curves like these
from your pc to it...

Try mapping the formula controller to the FL scratcher or
wave traveller - is that what you're talking about?

It ain't hardware but you can link a controller to the
scratcher - I like one of those midi keyboard pitch levers
that springs to the center for that.

FL studio is well worth it, i do most of my composing in
there. Works amazingly well with my Oxygen 8 midi
controller, and the ton of samples it comes with can easily
be morphed into something new within the FX mixer.

The wave traveller & scratcher are okay, but I consider them
"toy" plugins rather than serious ones... I'd also want to
be able to be able to use it to mix records live which
wouldn't be an option with them.

I have looked into getting (or even building) a midi
controlled scratch mixer setup, but is seems:

a) Impossible to have sliders that run as smooth as a real
crossfader or a very long working life.

b) You'd need a v. good soundcard (which I don't have) with
true zero latency and several I/Os (to put each deck's
signal through in stereo)

c) It wouldn't be portable unless the system for it was on a
laptop. I don't have a PC laptop...

Yes- I can see that the modwheel would be good fun for the
wave traveller or scratcher :)

Ah well no then - FL currently only has one stereo input
with ASIO, so even if you had a leet fast sound card it
wouldn't do what you want.

Yep, that was the other thing, I'd have to end up running
something like cubase as well as having a big midi
controller, just to mix two records, seems like overkill :)

Because I've got very nice record decks already and can
scratch using traditional methods :). I've toyed with the
idea of getting CD decks, but I really don't like using them
much (I can and have used them in clubs etc. but I just
wouldn't buy a pair myself) and the good ones are
ridiculously expensive.

In FL4 studio, the default song that is open when the
program loads contains 4 drum tracks.. "kick" "hi-hat" and
"snare" are red while "clap" is grey/white, and clap is the
only one that will generate sound.. what's wrong with the
others?

I recommend not using those shitty samples. Get some
drumloops and slice them up, or get a Waldorf Attack for
drumnoises. Personally I prefer slicing and fucking around
with drumloops, especially from vinyl sources to give it
some texture and sonic patina from the dust and scratches.

Even better, buy the fucking program ya cheapskate! It is
soooo worth the low low price.

project5 is brilliant. i moved from fruity to project5 when
it was first released. the only thing i missed from fruity
where the layers. i used to use layers to build a drum kit
that could be sequenced in the piano roll.

now i just use battery instead. i bit more fiddly, but well
worth the extra effort.

and to answer fleetmouse. you can rewire project5 to sonar
for audio recording. easy. damn shame i cant afford sonar
though.

really use fruity too much anymore. the sound of project5 is
just much better IMO.
