In friday, in british Radio3 (BBC) Symphonic BBC Orchestra
will play John's Cage track called 4"33'
What is unusual is that these over 4 minutes are
.....completely silence.
It was writen by Cage in 1952, and it was never "played"
before
The radio will transmit it live, and they must swich off
special devices which are protecting from unsuspected
silence .....
heck, i sant listen to it, shame

thanks hayakusen, that's interesting. i happen to like this
piece a lot - it's clever. i think i read somewhere that
some organization is performing a cage piece that will take
years. anyone know about this?

it isnt the 1st time 4.33 has been performed. its the first
uk performance by a full orchestra.
one of the points of the piece is to draw attention to the
elements of an orchestral performance + audience presence
that are usually ignored (breathing, movement, page-turning,
coughing etc)..

another thing i read about it was : despite the fact that
the piece is apparently "silent" - it isn't .. it can't be,
as there is no silence.

in my opinion, cage's "controversial" pieces are all very
well in a chin-strokey/point-proving kind of way - but his
most accomplished works are the more traditionally musical
ones.

it isn't supposed to be completely silent. the instruments
are supposed to be silent. it's all about surrounding noises
- thats where there is also music. to help people take the
time to actually notice this, he made 4'33".

I saw parts of this BBC performance on tv and the conductor
made a joke - he wiped his brow with a handkerchief,
suggesting it was hard work. which to me pretty much spoiled
the piece - there is to be no performance and in it's own
tiny way, this was.

I'd rather they play "dream" or "in a landscape" which are
actual Cage releases that are worth listening to.

Regarding "as slowly as possible" i'd rather they speed it
up as i am curious as to what this what sound like at a
normal time rate.
