... even good ones. Of course if you're working at 4:00
a.m. in an apartment, speakers aren't an option. =)

Anyhoo, I couldn't believe how crap my last choon sounded
when I listened to it on speakers so I remixed the fuck out
of it and it is available here:

speakers and headphones are just different listening
devices

maybe it sounds like "crap" now on headphones because you
mixed it on speakers

most headphone mixing will result in a seriously
treble-deficient mix... speakers tend to be more honest and
show up fine on both speakers and headphones. IMO.

ideally, you should make a mix that sounds relatively good
on any sort of speaker, from tiny laptop-speakers to
carstereo speakers, etc.

which means a lot of testing.

Yes, I blame the recent drop in my mastering quality to not
living in a house with several stereos and a ghetto blaster
anymore. Another good rule of thumb is if something sounds
good on a really bottom end hi-fi and some top end
headphones or a great hi-fi, it'll sound good on everything
in between.

I tend to use headphones to pick out details in something I
spot listening on speakers.

These are better, even if they do look poor aesthetically...

So true. Stuff I mix on phones is awfully farty-bassy when I
listen back on speakers.

If I were doing stuff for serious release I think I'd go buy
studio monitors - we already have two decent stereos and a
cheap boombox, and a few pairs of headphones in the house.

Amazing how picky I've gotten since my days of making cheesy
midi tracks with a $30.00 sound card playing back through
speakers scavenged from a boombox. :D

I think the lesson we all learned today is that if you
master on uneven equipment, it will sound uneven on even
equipment.

Did you mixed it on your pc?
if so,. some soundcards have different settings for speakers
and headphones, that will help a lot.

and ofcourse use good headphones

Sort of like, if you shorten one leg while standing sideways
on a hill you will stand at an angle at the equator. Or
something.

er, that was supposet to be a reply to St. Pigeon.

And to Aesthetics I say, I'm using an M-audio card, not one
of those consumer pieces of crap, and sony MDR-7506
headphones. This is supposed to be a fairly accurate rig..
as a matter of fact, if the Sonys have one flaw it's that
they're a little bass heavy (a consequence of the
closed-back design), so I guess speakers and headphones just
respond differently.

i mix on both.
i use headphones for checking "color" and stereo stuff.
then i use speakers for more general mastering. like 4eq
stuff. i also try to save a few mastering and normalizing
presets when i find they work on a specific type of track.
so i can try using them on other similar sounding tracks.

Interesting - I usually don't apply EQ after I have my
sounds the way I want 'em - I always feel if I EQ the final
mix I'll be inadvertently hacking at one sound in order to
tweak another...

yeah, nothing drastic.

i like to use T-Racks for this. it has some simulated
analogue compression and a 4 eq that i like to use. it also
has a nice stereo width knob that spreads the sound out a
bit.

yeah its a real problem coz late night the best time to
work. 2am is a perfect time to work. you just have to eq
during the day

Yes, they look gash. I've never seen a photograph of them
that makes them actually look like they do though... Such a
nice flat frequency response and really good in loud club
environments.

I have found a useful way of combatting this problem, I find
hat if i compare tracks that i mastered on speakers an
listen to them on headphones i then master the tracks i'm
writing compared to these. Works for me anyway.
