I'll start:

It's not about the tools , it's about how you use them.

honestly.... I think that the best is a nice mix of hardware
and software..... it's nice to be able to incorporate both
mediums into one diabolical set...... but if you want
inexpensive, easy to use.... I'd go software all the way

If you're into hardware:

You'll always have aliasing on software generated
sounds.

I like being able to touch the synths- it's so much more
intuitive.

There are no software based delay, reverb or EQ units that
match even comparatively cheap hardware ones.

If you're into software:

One day soon, we'll see softsynths that can do things that
could never be created in analogue gear and the need for
speciallist digital synths will be redundant due to
increased pc power.

Sequencing hardware aside from drum machines is gash. Tiny
LCD screens and awful user interfaces. For sequencing at
least software is the way forward.

I'm a "laptop artiste" I crave the freedom being able to
shove my whole studio in a rucksack gives me.

Off topic really but pertinent to your initial statement...
I think. Maybe. Dunno?

"One thing about any definition of a 'golden age', for me,
comes also within music, also within art, also within
literature. It is the point where the desires of the creator
are greater than the technology which is available. There
comes a moment when the technology gets closer and closer to
the imagination and creativity of the writer and in the end,
if your not careful, it overtakes and suddenly, serendipity
- which before was from your own sweat and blood but you
created something and thought 'goodness me that was great!'
- serendipity comes by saying 'if I press one of these 397
button on this synthesizer maybe I'll get something out of
it?' Now at that moment the machinery is driving the
creativity and the creativity is not driving the machinery
and maybe that is where the golden age stops. Maybe."

Hardware costs money for each copy of it... if you want 3 of
the same fx box, you need to buy three. software allows
multiple instances of most things. Software is also
piratable. This isn't just handy for nefarious purposes, but
it allows you effectively to have two or more studios... for
the price of one (well, aside from the
pc/soundcard/speakers) I've worked on a track over my
parent's house them mailed it to myself so I can continue
working on it elsewhere. I've even done this with midi files
to my work email account and made basslines/melodies on
company time. Not that that's anything to be proud of,
*ahem*.
