win2k pro.

everytime i open an mp3 (no matter what i use to open it), i
get:

explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by
windows.

no error log is created from what i can tell, after this
message i lose any open windows i have open and my desktop
resets.. lose my active desktop (if active desktop happens
to be turned on)

thats such a general error i cant track down a solution.
anyone else ever had this problem?

I use win2k pro... never had any problems with that... you
think it might be the codec?

the program i use to play mp3 does not close, btw.. it loads
the file and plays it.

also, my processor is pegged at 100% if im watching it while
the file is loading, just before the error.

that could very well be it.. ive installed mad amounts of
dvd burning/ripping and divx creating software lately.
should i just install a new codec, i dont have an audio
codec in my add remove programs like i do the divx codecs
and such..

that's very strange, but then it must be your OS, mustn't
it? I haven't heard about something like this before.

I too have win2k pro and when I watch movies after a while
the comp just freezes. strange. You`ll find the codecs by
going to

Setting> Control panel > Sounds and Multimedia > Hardware >
Video Codecs > Properties > Properties

Just remove the offending article from there. :D

Oh boy. i hope you dont dont have the same thing my friend
had. he contracted some sort of virus of a file sharing
program that would delete some .dll file or some shit and
not alllow him to open mp3 files anylonger. i think its been
pretty common recently. it was a pain to get rid of
apparently too.

i downloaded a codec pack once, and it had all the things i
needed to veiw the avi files, audio and all. but these packs
come with tonnes of shit that you dont even know about.

yeah normally im pretty careful. i keep tabs on whats going
onto my computer. but ive recently upgraded some hardware,
and subsequently some software... so somewhere in that mass
of maintainance something went awry.

so.. this virus/any idea what its called/what's going to
find it?

a temp solution could be opening your mp3 player and then
dragging the mp3s into the player, so you dont have to open
them

not sure, theres this one aphex twin music video (alberto
balsam) yes there is one! and after 7 seconds into it i get
the same
explorer.exe will now close windows thing.
is this problem within an mp3 you played or the codec

no idont know what its called, but i know he did massive
research on it cause he wanted to get rid of it himself. you
could possibly check out symantec's site or mcafee. they
always have an updated list of viruses.

One thing i found interesting is that you use ad-aware and
spybot. usually, interestingly enough, they end up finding
each other. which is why its my personal belief that both
programs are spyware themselves.
Ever notice that no matter when it is that you install one
of these, even on a fresh pc, it finds all these "harmful"
files pertaining to spyware? how do we know the program
doesnt come with these files, and while you load the program
its installing these files. then when you run it for the
first time, it magically finds them to show you its doing
its job. then the kicker is, people get suckered into paying
for the "plug-in" to actively "monitoring" incoming
spyware.

BULLSHIT!

*runs out of back of thread*

Recently Mcafee put out and upgrade that includes a "real"
spyware blocker/remover. its pretty cool, but hasnt found
anything on my comp. interesting. i bet ad-aware would find
597 harmful files. i know spybot is probably the lesser of
the two evils being that its used by lots of big companies.

look into it.

It's probably a conflict with several different programs
trying to grap the file and open it.

In Windows Explorer try going to tools - folder options -
file types and remove the reference to mp3. Then
re-associate mp3 files with whatever you use - Winamp, for
example, will usually reassociate its filetypes when it
starts up.

nice thought.. i thought it worked for a minute, but no.

if i open a file with 'open with' then its fine, but if i
double click an mp3 and immediately try to trow it in an
application im fucked.

Oh. if you can open an mp3 then i think youre ok with the
whole virus thing. cause the virus doesnt permit you to play
an mp3 or wma what so ever.

feel better? probably not eh?

I would try maybe reinstalling one media player - Winamp,
say (my fave :-)

maybe try running the microsoft registry repair utility, then rebooting.

sounds like a registry issue, since if you specify which
program you want to use it works.
