my street race (porsche 951 vs. mustang GT)

hevquip from 45.697 bits of electricity on 2001-12-06 19:50 [#00058719]

this is my latest street race. it happened last night.
altogether, i'd say it was pretty fun. i won too, so i can't
complain.

my car is a porsche 951. currently my mods are: k&n cone
filter, bought to replace my airbox that was in bad
condition, lindseyracing.com boost enhancer that makes the
turbo spool 1000 rpm sooner and reach full boost sooner, and
autothority stage II chips. currently my car makes around
260-270 hp with 290 ft/lb torque. the car i raced was an
older fox bodied (the boxy ones) mustang GT.

after my film watching class, i figured i'd practice some
launches in my car. i turn off the main road onto a side
street where i get in the left turn lane so i can go down
the road some and turn right, putting me on a secluded
straight road. while stopped, a cadillac passes by in front
of me and a mustang behind it. i pull out and get behind the
mustang with my right turn less than 100 ft. down the road.
instead of turning though, i follow the traffic back onto
the other main street in my town- diamond drive. the
cadillac, the GT (which i just learned it was a GT as i
could get close enough to see the back of it at the light),
and me are all in the right turn lane, making our way
through the red light. i wasn't too sure if i wanted to race
because, a) my tires need replacing and it's cold, so
traction= poo, b) my wire thingy for my radar detector broke
and i haven't replaced it yet, so i have no way of knowing
if cops are around, and c) i need to get my brakes done, so
going fast is only smart when you can stop well. anyway, as
the GT turns right, i hear him get on the throttle, his car
producing that nice muscle car sound, but it's no match for
my 4-banger! muhahaha! actually, the chips give me a lower
exhaust note and the engine has that nice european sound to
it. it in no way sounds like rice. seeing that something
might develop here, i california roll through the red light
and get on the throttle, passing him quickly and then
slowing down to see if he'll take suit. he does. yay, a race
in a town where they're hard to come by. i get it into
second which is good for 70 mph and take off for about 200
ft. and gain 3-4 car lengths on him, then slow down. we pass
Texaco and go over a very small hill at slightly illegal
speeds. i make sure to go slow here because i've gotten a
ticket here before. after the hill, it opens to a
straightaway for a few hunder feet, so i downshift and take
off again, gaining 3-4 car lengths again before i start to
slow a few hundred feet later. i let him catch up and pass
me. he speeds up a little bit as we go around about a
gradual 90 degree right curve (same one i spun 270 degrees
in another story). i just hang out behind him at about 50.
the curve goes up a hill and passes by Conoco. i make sure
to go slow here because sometimes there's cops. promptly
past Conoco, also an area called Conoco hill, there are
three rolling hills going downward for our direction that
lead into the golf course area. i hang out behind him
because the hills don't give the best visibility as to
what's below. we're doing maybe around 55-60. soon as we get
to the bottom of the hills, i downshift into 3rd. the golf
course area is the best place to speed and race in town.
anyway, after shifting, i take it up to about 90-100, coming
up behind him, gaining around 5-6 car lengths. i let off the
throttle and wait for him to catch up some where i get on
the gas again in 4th gear, him not being able to catch up.
quickly i get on the brakes because of a slight hill that
you can't see over and also the golf course pro shop is on
the right side and cops hang out there and nab speeders. we
cruise after that small hill and dip into a right bend, with
trees on the right side, limiting your view around the
corner. there's the fire station on the left and i don't
want to speed by because a cop could be situated there too.
after we pass the fire station, the roundabout is maybe 300
ft. ahead. once more, i downshift into 3rd and take off. i
he gets into my lane and follows me through the roundabout.
i figured either the guy wants to pull over and talk, or
he's pissed off at me. i do the roundabout at about 20 mph
in second gear, so when i come out, i'm at 2000 rpm. i stay
in the left lane, he changes into the right, maybe to
initiate a pass. i was expecting him to pass me momentarily
because i can't really take off real well with such low
rpm's, but i get on the gas and my turbo spools up and i'm
off with him losing ground. after that, we pretty much just
cruised through the golf course, not racing or anything, i
just let him hang out in front of me. we came back to the
rolling hills i mentioned before and i shifted down into
third and gave it enough gas to go up the hills. he stayed
in the right lane and ended up turning off into Conoco or
Dominoe's Pizza or something and i proceeded home. it was a
fun race that consisted of me coming from behind, flying by
him, slowing down, letting him pass me or try to catch up,
then flying past him. the race probably spanned a whole 7-8
miles through most of town. i thought about giving him a
thumbs up several times, but it was dark and he might of
thought i was flipping him off. at least i live in a town
where i won't get shot for doing something like that.

damn, why do you have to post such long messages... theres
no way I'm reading all of that...

How much did your car cost, did you steal it?

i love it when hevquip posts his race stories! there so
detailed! that porsche is famous in my mind

Ceri JC on 2001-12-07 11:12 [#00058863]

I read it all. Good story. Why don't you play aphex twin
tracks really loud as you race?

As a street racer can you confirm that MSR on the dreamcast
is the most realistic street racing game?

Have you ever been chased by (and lost) the cops? One of my
friends claims to have lost a volvo pursuit vehicle (UK) in
his V12 Vauxhall Corsa. He realised he was never going to
lose them on the motorway, so he led them into the country
lanes where his superior acceleration and much shorter car
length allowed him to lose them. He only did this because
they always pull him for nothing and he's claimed harasment
and they still pull him. Looks like next time he'll have a
real reason to run away ;)

Have you ever raced for money?

Have you ever considered taking part in the MSX races in
Japan?

What other cars have you raced in?

hevquip from 45.697 bits of electricity on 2001-12-07 16:55 [#00058892]

so far, i've only raced my porsche 951 and my now
nonfunctioning porsche 944 because that's all i've owned.
the most realistic racing game is gran turismo 3: A spec.
that's a track racing game. as for street racing games, i
don't know, they're usually oriented more towards arcade
style gameplay. Burnout looks wicked though because it has
very detailed crashes.

i have not run from the cops. i have gotten pulled over 4
times, 2 of those earning me tickets. however, last week i
think i managed to avoid a ticket by turning off onto a
street and hauling ass home. your friend who ran from the
cops...it's plausible seeing that he was smart enough to get
on country roads.

i have never raced for money as my town is small and races
are hard to come by. i wouldn't mind taking my car to the
track. i am going to begin to learn how to drift better and
more often. for me, the easiest drifting is cold drifting,
where the ground is cold and traction is easily broken. wet
drifting is the worst as you often have to correct and it's
less controllable (i've also spun 270 degrees in the rain)

hevquip from 45.697 bits of electricity on 2001-12-07 16:58 [#00058893]

for this particular race, i was listening to bogdan's album
"samurai math beats." i play my aphex/autechre/squarepusher
or whatever collection. the more people around, the more i
turn up the radio and more likely i'm going to put on come
to daddy or ventolin or anything considered obnoxious by the
general public.

hevquipisghey on 2001-12-07 18:23 [#00058900]

lame.

I wish I had a porsche, cause then I could tell people on
message boards like this about it... people who I'll never
ever meet in real life, but the reason I would tell them is
cause it would make me feel big...

i have a porsche because a)it was fairly inexpensive
(believe it or not), b)it looks good, and c) it's fast.

The_Funkmaster from Newfoundland, Canada on 2001-12-07 22:28 [#00058947]

well I was kinda implying that you wrote that message
telling us about your fast porsche cause it makes you feel
big... ah well, forget it...

it sounds like you guys are jealous that you don't have any
super-cool stories to post and make you feel big.

hevquip from 34.5307 jaws of minks on 2001-12-07 23:11 [#00058979]

i wrote the story in hopes that you would all feel the
excitement i feel when i race.

Mutant Death Pengwin from Medicine Hat on 2001-12-07 23:18 [#00058981]

hevquip, sadly i did not feel excitement but i was very
entertained by it. it was a great story and i really like
the fact that you made the story so detailed.

Porsche? Bah, that's kidstuff, wait till you see the
automobile I've designed. To be unveiled when I am the ripe
old age of 23, for Ophecks Enterprises, Ltd. Run your little
bitch car off the ROAD, daddy-o!

Ceri JC: I love MSR on the Dreamcast!! You should (and
anyone else interested in street racing and has a dreamcast
or maybe a playstation2) check out Tokyo Highway Challenge
and THC2. I know it's not near as good as MSR but it should
be at bargin bin prices now. The main focus of the games is
street racing rival gangs on Tokyo's night streets. It has
some pretty good graphics too.

Super Magnetic Neo from Australia on 2001-12-08 16:38 [#00059058]

Names a little confusing:
Europe/Australia: Tokyo Highway Challenge
America: Tokyo Xtreme Racing/Racer

tokyo xtreme road racing...my friend has that. i played it a
little. i wish it was a little less arcadey. you can get
pulled over by the cops in that game too.

i really like the game "driver." have you guys played that?
excellent crashes and cop chases. you can direct your own
replays too.

i have driver on the computer and the playstation, fucking
wicked game!

hevquip:

Do *you* pronounce it "poor-shhh"or "paw-shh-uu"? the latter
is correct believe it or not.

I think this is a good post, please put up any other stories
re: streetracing.

I cleaned my Boss' Lotus Elise on saturday, personally I
think it looks pretentious, but my girlfriend (his
step-daughter) has had a go in it and says it drives well.
He offered to buy her insurance on it as an 18th birthday
present and she turned him down!

I'm getting a car next week, but it's not a very good one.
It's respectable.

Ceri JC on 2001-12-09 22:17 [#00059266]

If I ever have enough spare cash to get a car that is showy
rather than just a "A2B-Mobile", I'll get a Black Bentley
Turbo Classic with tinted windows, a mp3 drive instead of a
CD player. Cedar wood panelling and black leather seats. It
is big and powerful, but not sporty, just regal. I do not
have some inadequecy I'm making up for ;)

hevquip from 45 angry wasps throats on 2001-12-10 16:48 [#00059608]

i pronounce it "por-sha." i will be posting another story as
i had two races this weekend, one after the other. i raced
an eagle talon and a mazda mx-3.

Ceri JC on 2001-12-10 17:03 [#00059610]

Ha, that's the right pronunciation (it doesn't matter, I'm
just sad, I know)!

A friend of mine has a mazda mx-5, is the mx-3 similair? I
don't think I've seen one before.

hevquip from 45 angry wasps throats on 2001-12-10 18:46 [#00059626]

i've never heard of an mx-5. i know of the mx-6 though. the
mx-3 is a fairly small car that looks somewhat like a
mutated jelly bean.

Ceri JC on 2001-12-10 18:58 [#00059628]

The MX-5 is the probably the most common sports Mazda. It's
typically a soft top. They're quite popular in Japan too.

Mazda MX3 is a sport coupè who has been sold some years
ago.

Actually my car is a MAZDA LANTIS 323F 1.5 16v coupè... but
probably my next car will be Mazda MX 1.8 ... and I hope
soon...
