Xammax: He is a dirty hippy who got famous during the
protests against the Newbury bypass. (Swampy not Jivver)

Whilst I'm all for conservation that guy was a clueless
hippie. More bothered with the "idea" of being green than
the practicalities of it. My brother saw him leading the
idiot protestors at Faslane when he was stationed there.

I've got to ask why someone would refuse medical help.

Usually it's religious reasons... In his case though, I
imagine he thought his course of chi tea and accupuncture
prescribed by his herbalist would be enough :D

Religious I can understand but still think is stupid but
his... well he clearly wasn't thinking straight. :P

There are a lot of protestors like that though. In fact if
you feel strongly enough to protest in the way he does
against anything the odds are that you have a very one sided
view of the subject.

"Idiot Protestors" is a bit harsh isnt it?

I don't know for a fact that he didn't do it (or not
as the case may be) for religious reasons- I was just
speculating. Although, I doubt he is a devout orthodox
muslim or roman catholic (both of which sometimes refuse
operations on religious grounds). :)

though.

Yes, the very fact that you feel strongly enough about it to
go and protest against something that is (in the case of
Faslane) perfectly: safe; legal; approved of by a huge
majority of the populance and will never, in our lifetime at
least, be changed shows you are unlikely to be open to see
the other side of the argument.

Jedi Chris: Amusingly, I just bumped into that aquaintance
of ours who until recently looked like the recently departed
swampy at Tesco.

On the subject of the faslane protestors, yes, they were
"idiot protestors". Swimming naked out to a submarine,
climbing aboard and dancing on it till you collapse from
hypothermia whilst the naval guards look on an laugh, when
you're not even in an area where TV crews/reporters can get
to, so it won't even get publicity is stupid IMO.

I wonder if they actually understood that none of the subs
there were actually equipped with nukes and were (like all
operating naval submarines the world over) merely nuclear
powered? Probably not, which makes their protest even more
amusing/pointless.

episode of HIGNFY and he was made to look stupid. I think
Paul Merton even felt sorry for him at the end of it.

I have to admit, I felt a bit bad for him as well... it's
just a shame his thirst for publicity for his cause made him
go on shows like that. I mean, even David Beckham had the
good sense not to go on it (or at least listen to whoever
told him not to)...

I think the problem the protestors had was using someone
like that as a figurehead. It reinforced people's stereotype
of environmentalists. Had they used a "green" business man
or even a member of the aristocracy who did a lot of
environmental work the focus would have been on their
cause.

Even his own people realised towards the end (before he
disappeared) that the media just saw him as this sort of
clown and as soon as he cleared off the protests disappeared
from the news.

If anything though the supposedly clever protestors messed
themselves up because he was an excellent media draw...and
if someone with a bit of sense had have been wise enough to
realise it they could have used that to massive effect.

If they had sense they wouldn't be protesting against half
the things they did though! ;P
