Gabriel is awesome, those first three self-titled albums are
so delicious. And yeah, The Zombies would have been the
second best band in history if they managed to put out some
more stuff, so sweet. A higher awesomeness-per-song factor
than any non-Beatle band. And check out Underwater Moonlight
by the Soft Boys, I haven't pimped that one in a while.

what albums have you heard?

go for emperor tomato ketchup or transient
random-noise bursts with announcements
("crest" from
this album is great, listen to it!)

''Cybele's Reverie'' is my favorite Stereolab track, how
could you not fall in love with it?

i used to listen to Faith No More a lot, and they're still
one of my favorite bands... i think these guys are one of
the best things that ever happened to rock.

yeah, they were great, but i don't see them as a classic
rock band somehow...

i saw them live years ago and i was quite impressed

check out The Darkness... they are great rock music and
actually funny while still being great musically

oasis is over-hated... give them a fair listen, you might
like them
also, since they so notoriously steal so much of their
music, its a good way to get a sampling of and a newer take
on a lot of their influences, and they have some great/very
important influences

Stereolab is great, but I can see how it'd be impossible to
get into if you don't like the style at all. I really like
Transient Random Noise Burts with Announcements .. very
early and noisy without so much of the loungy
retrofuturism.
However I HATE Belle and Sebastian with a passion. why the
hell have they gotten so popular?! it seems like every
indie fan I talk to these days is in love with them and
wants to have Stuart Murdoch's babies. It's well
constructed, yeah.. and nice enough.. but that voice! Sure
they're poetic, I guess.. but jeez. what a bunch of
pretentious whiny babies.

personal vendettas aside -
I'd agree that you should check out :
My Bloody Valentine
Sonic Youth
Cocteau Twins

if you have not already done so.

I like the Darkness. But that might be because I'm from the
US and I'm not overexposed to them like everyone in the UK.

Anyway, as far as new-ish rock bands go, I wholeheartedly
endorse the following:

The Detholz! - unknown electro-robot-rock from Chicago.
They have one self-released cd called "Who Are The
Detholz!?" and you can download some of their amazingly
great tracks at their website.

Polysics - Japanese synthy quirky catchy pop-rock on Asian
Man Recs. I've only heard their 2nd most recent album "Hey!
Bob! My Friend!" and it's great, and I hear their new one is
amazing as well. Their website is here.

And lots of other stuff that I can't think of. If you're
interested in metal at all, I can help you out with that too
:)
