I can't get enough of oldschool idm,... 1990-1994 stuff
where they saturate the layer after layer of melody from raw
sounding synth waves,.. LFO, Black Dog, Early Afx/Ae, alder
and elius (they aren't old, but they have the oldschool
sound imo) I just can't get enough, music from the era where
the melody was more important than the glitch, and raw
aesthetic was the only way to go,

I want more of this
I need more of this

show me the way......

Matt.
Refund.

Old school is good, Nu school is better. All the big Warp
Artists have better works the second half of their careeer,
compared to the first half IMO

go and buy the Stasis compilation that peacefrog have just
reissued. it's ace. look out for Redcell, Elixir, Beaumont
Hannant, Wladimir M and anything on eevolute, B12, GPR or
ART.

this stuff does not get enough props imho.

and if you want new stuff that's made in the spirit of the
old days, you could do worse than pick up Metamatics From
Death to Passwords album.

sweet, It's nice to know that some people are still doing
the old sound, even if it does make them sound a bit
amateurish, (which is probably why people are afraid to do
the sound anymore)

older sounds, not the newer ones! they sound so overdone and
polished, I love the old sounds!

Get old R&S (record label) compilations like In Order To
Dance- loads of great old techno/idm on them. I thought
Sheath sounded pretty old skool for a new release.

i feel that IDM gets better with time.

thats one of the greatest aspects of such a genre, i don't
find that it gets old quick... constant change and
innovation.

variety - the spice of life right?

Yes, I like to see some old-school appreciation. More props
need to be given to artists like The Black Dog and B12, if
it wasn't for them who knows what we would be listening to
today.

As for checking out older relases, your best bet is to go to
www.discogs.com type in an old artist like The Black Dog,
B12, F.U.S.E, etc. etc. and check what labels released their
early material like GPR, R&S, and even ART. They'll show
you all the relases that they have by those labels, so it'll
definitely give you some help.

Hmmmm
I definitely like new IDM better, for the most part.
Incunabula is pleasant, for example, but it bores me to
tears. I understand the sentiment, and I like alot of it,
but somehow it just all seems transitional. I like
Artificial Intelligence 2 (don't have 1).. especially
Beaumont Hannant, B12 .. lots of the aforementioned stuff.
It just seems so unfinished though in comparison to stuff
being made now.
On that note, i am still looking for a copy of Electro Soma
.. grrrr

I got a feeling you might like "orb - adventures through the
ultraworld"

it's a double disc, but you can usually find it pretty
easily for the price of a one cd release, it's a little more
ambient htan his later stuff,

very nice :)

Ahh, finally! Oldschool IDM has been taken out into the
spotlight from backstage...

Listening to UI mix right now, some classic oldschool acid
sounds on this one... ;)

Yeah, all the early Black Dog stuff etc. is good stuff imo.

On with the show!

i think this track gives quite a good representation of what

I'm quite old school when it comes to IDM. Back when it was
called "Intelligent Techno" and stuff.

Anything off of old Artificial Intelligence or Trance Europe
Express compilations is just fine by me.

Vapourspace, Kenny Larkin, Drexciya, Elecktroids... Yummy.

I am firmly in favour of the old-skool. As much as I like
recent work by Autechre and new glitch pop stars, it's all
overshadowed by the original pioneers. I find music now
takes baby steps forward, compared to the giant leaps of
Black Dog, B12, AFX, (very early)Mu-Ziq, Beaumant Hannant,
Drexciya, early Rephlex releases. Now it's all too knowing,
music is either overtly referential, an academic exercise in
"complexity" or just downright shit like VSnares. The past
can't be repeated, it'll never sound the same. It's all
over, all new "IDM" is just pissing in the wind, time to go
home. Will the last one to leave turn off the strobe.

old sckool is fantastic imo - incunabula is a rather special
album in that regard. i'm currently absorbed into the old
school electro vibe - pretty "stock standard" list, but
brilliant nonetheless: drexciya / elecktroids,
dopplereffekt, model 500 etc. ... did i mention
dopplereffekt ?

I forgot about that track. I add to it Acen's "Trip to the
Moon" and Spiral Tribe's "Rush your fucking bollocks off".

Classic, classic old school i would recommend, at the risk
of repeating others more learned than I, would be any early
AFX (AB 3, SAW 85-92, Polygon Window), Tango n Vectif - Mu
Ziq, Incunabula - Autechre, Bytes - Black Dog, Basic Data
Manipulation (Tastes and Textures, Volume 2) - Beaumont
Hannant, Electro(Soma) - B12

Check out all of FSOL's early material on Jumpin and Pumpin.
They released a compilation in 1992 I think called
Earthbeat. It's a compilation of all their aliases.
Definitely check it out. It shows just how varied FSOL was
and still is.

there is good & bad in both oldskool & newskool. personally
in any dance genre I listen to, the oldskool stuff is much
more to my taste, altho I think for many of the old headz
nostalgia has a large part to play in this.

I agree with dog belch on the "new IDM" thing, the main
difference being newskool music is produced mainly using
computers.

thats right, I own the compilation you speak of but I
wouldn't say it's a great album to recomend unless like me
your a fsol head, there are a couple of really great tracks
on that compilation but all in all it's not great, there's
better oldskool techno out there.
