Laptops: Good or Bad?

I wonder if you might be able to help me out. I was gonna
get me a PC but will likely be moving abroad and so am
thinking its best to get a laptop.

Is this a wise move?

Cheers

Depends on what you want to do with this laptop

you could probably get two pc's for a price of a laptop...so
you could get one pc abroad and one at home :)

I'm not a gameplayer so I just need it for word processing,
emails, internet, CD-burning and maybe some music-making.
Maybe I should wait and just buy a PC abroad.

They've improved a lot, they used to be very susceptible
(compared to desktops) to crashes, HD failures, etc. but
nowadays they're pretty good. Few PC laptops have decent on
board sopund though, so if you want to do music on it, you'd
be wise to consider buying an extrenal soundcard.

Ceri: true...

jonesy: basicly id weigh the situatios out to most benefit
.. YOU, because i know that id love a laptop, but it wouldnt
benefit me as much as it would just be cool, and in in the
end, a waste I guess.

Quite why you're contemplating leaving such a beautiful city
is beyond me.

Jar: Its looking more and more like Milton Keynes every day.
Swansea should be grateful its shunned and underinvested
in.

Ceri: thanks. Can you get DVD burners on them though? And is
an external sound card pricey?

Any makes that should be avoided like the plague?

I am actually quite happy wallowing in mostly destitute
areas :)

RE: Laptops, just make sure you get plenty of RAM and a good
processor (like any PC really) but also that it has a pucker
screen display, I have an old laptop in the house (well I
say old, it's about 3 years old at a guess) and the picture
quality is horrendous. Good job it was free.

You also might want to check that if you buy one here you
can get a USA adaptor for it as well as a UK one

You can get dvd burners for them, but they're still
rather pricey. External soundcards vary... if you want
really good studio quality sound you can easily spend £300+
on a PCMIA one that links to a breakout box. Chris Brown has
a Soundblaster Audigy (about £110) and that's fine for the
sort of stuff you'd want to do though. My advice would be
get the laptop, then, if you think the sound is crap, buy a
better soundcard.

Re: Brands- Some people I know loathe Siemens Fujitsu, but I
think they're not that bad (great battery life too- like
Siemens phones...). Viao (from Sony) are the premium ones
and IMO worth the money if you cna afford it. Laptops are
one thing where I would steer clear of unknown cheap
brands.

Jar's point about power adaptors is worth noting- you don't
want to have to carry the mains cable and a travel adaptor
round with you...

Laptop processors seem to be getting to a point where
they're better than desktop PC ones. The Pentium 4 M is
actually a lot better processor than the standard Pentium 4.
As already mentioned the only shitter with laptops is the
sound. External is the only way. Try and give any laptop a
good fiddling with too. Try and type a couple of paragraphs
in the shop. Sometimes the keyboards are shite.

i'd reccomend a mac laptop over a pc one, especially as your
not bothered about games. The ibooks come at a good price
and look much better than similar priced pc's.

I was going to max out the RAM on my IBM R32 to 1GB. Turns
out it uses "special" memory and that it will cost around
3000 Swedish coins to do it.

Get something that doesn't use "special" memory :)

if you're going to be traveling a lot, and want to take your
comp with you, then go laptop.

if the computer will be spending the majority of it's time
on the same desk, then without a doubt go desktop.

The powerbooks (even the old ones) do shame the standard PC
laptop ones, but they lack things like midi, multiple I/O,
surround sound support, etc.

I wouldn't get one, unless someone else is paying for it.
Dead hardware if you ask me - un-upgradable.

laptops are fuckin da bigidy bong. portable, great for gigs,
plus you can waste time on a plane with solitaire.

fuck desktops.

like i said above. laptops are excellent if you need to
take your computer with you a lot.

if you don't, it's dumb to limit yourself. get a desktop.

right now mobility isn't a concern of mine at all. i could
get quite a bit more bang for the buck with a desktop.

easier to upgrade, larger-better monitor, no worries about
heat, nicer keyboard, etc...

I've got one of these(link below)- with monitor and
keyboard it fits in a carry on- less than half the price of
an equivalent laptop and its upgradable with standard parts.
Its about the size of a toaster. Also you could get a Mac
laptop which look cool when you are at Starbucks sipping yer
latte.

my pc(basically)
