To all those on this board who make music

brendan etheridge from u.s. on 2001-12-04 23:14 [#00058187]

(That's a good majority, I presume)
I was just curious: has anyone here on this MB sent in demos
to record labels (e.g., Rephlex, Warp, Caroline, etc.)? And
if so, has anyone heard back from these labels?... Is anyone
here SIGNED to a label?...

Dumb English Guy from England on 2001-12-04 23:19 [#00058189]

A friend of mine is starting a label called BlackNight
recordings. He's got some stuff on promo already that even
AFX would be proud of. If you have any demos (CD only) that
you would like him to hear :
BlackNight@
11a Downton Ave
Streatham Hill
London SW2 3TX
UK

He promises he will get back to you.

thorpe from sydney on 2001-12-05 13:48 [#00058362]

its actually not real expensive to start your own label.
about 4 years ago i was helping run a label with two other
guys.

we started out by doing a couple of compilations which the
artists themselves chiped in and paid to get it pressed. im
not talking huge runs 1000 copies is all, and most bands are
keen to chip in $100ea just to get the promotion.

we then just organized all the promos [interviews, stories
in the papers, gigs] the money we made from two of these
compilations paid the artists back [no profit, but free
promo] then financed two succesfull eps and one not so
succesfull.

it can be done, not that difficult. just keep it to scale.

thorpe

ps: i sent a demo to rephlex about 6 months ago....no
reply....im sure theyve recorded over my MD....damn it.

Dirtypriest from Denmark on 2001-12-05 15:44 [#00058380]

April records (show off electronica)

bim bam recordings (drumm´nbass, trance... "dancy" music)

Monoid on 2001-12-05 16:38 [#00058399]

Im not good enough yet....but I guess it isnt very difficult
to get on a label here in Europe / Germany

D-Hex from Blue Springs MO on 2001-12-05 17:14 [#00058414]

I sent a couple of these tunes to Planet-Mu.
(www.ugrafix.com/atft) I finally emailed Mike P to see if
he even received them and he said no, even though I received
a receipt from the post office that said he did get them.

morg from Davis, California on 2001-12-05 20:59 [#00058452]

I haven't sent anything yet, but I'm considering
it...finding labels other than Warp/Rephlex is tricky
though...

Alex

Bogus on 2001-12-06 07:23 [#00058526]

i sent a demo of me banging keys on the piano randomly...

they replied asking if that was what i wanted to do or if it
was just random shit.

i said 'it's random shit' then they said then we are not
interested.

Mutant Death Pengwin from Medicine Hat on 2001-12-06 07:34 [#00058535]

bogus, where did you send that demo to?

Ophecks from Nova Scotia on 2001-12-06 07:35 [#00058538]

Bogus is full of shit. He lives up to his name!!! :)

Mutant Death Pengwin from Medicine Hat on 2001-12-06 07:37 [#00058542]

oh. thats too bad. i want to send some stuff, but it won't
fit with any of the music y'all make.

Ophecks from Nova Scotia on 2001-12-06 07:38 [#00058545]

I play guitar, not electronic music, but I want to try some
CPU stuff. But I play a mean guitar, mmmrrrowwww.

rF on 2001-12-06 08:32 [#00058564]

i might send something out one of these days

maybe the fragilenine album 'in the blink of an eye'.. hard
industrial music .. might send it to nothing records or
sommat

but yeah we're (fragilenine) currently on 8-bit recordings
(www.8bitrecordings.cjb.net)
they havent updated to add me yet.. (i only emailed our bio
about a week ago)

Fernz on 2001-12-06 09:13 [#00058567]

Hey Ophecks, if you play guitar you should make thrash
techno! :)

doki from grmny on 2001-12-06 09:56 [#00058575]

hey monoid - why you think so?

i´m living in germany and also want to send out stuff next
year ...

besides - force inc. and mille plateaux, etc. are very good
labels that push experimental stuff alot ... not to forget
digital hardcore!

I've send out a demo to almost every label in the planet,
although some have responded back both positive/negative
,most haven't.

Mike P gave me a very nice response. (but not nice enough
for a deal :-( )

i am just finishing up my first solo demo, but it still
needs to be mastered and stuff. probably take another month
or so to sort it all out. hopefully i will send it out to a
few places later this year(i may just give it to friends),
if and when that happens i will post back here and let you
know what happened.

tolstoyed.... in answer to your question.
i have made about 40 electronic tracks over the last few
years but always hated them after about a week. i have since
erased almost all of them. my new demo has 5 tracks. they
are very lo-fi/ambient/experimental..... i like them :) also
i am in a band. play guitar and have written about 15 songs
for that.... but we have only recorded about three.

of music.... from classical.. to jazz.... to electronic
