"cliffs" (SAWII Disc I)
"matchsticks" (SAWII Disc II)
Xtal
Heliosphan
Next Heap With
Goon Gumpas

that track 11 from AB3 is good too, even though it's just
the ambient backtrack from Garden of Limniri (caustic
window) :D

i'm speaking about ON (28 mix)

the single track ON, is not ambient imo.
it could be techno.

offline Oddioblender from Fort Worth, TX (United States) on 2003-12-30 09:35 [#01010234]
Points: 9601 Status: Lurker | Followup to hyakusen: #01010206

yes, ON is a good one, isn't it? :D

and now we have most irritating mistake of the century :
who told you that On is not ambient ? I could even say that
Ae and their EP7 is an ambient album
if tre track contains beat, and even distortion - who said
its not ambient ?

techno ? nah...

offline WooferAttack from Milano (Italy) on 2003-12-30 09:45 [#01010249]
Points: 12920 Status: Lurker

ON has an ambient melody in the background but it's mixed
with techno beats. so it's not ambient.

the pure ambient concept is totally another think.

then you can continue to believe that ON or EP7 is ambient
and for me it's the same.

offline hyakusen from 8=============> on 2003-12-30 09:48 [#01010252]

ambient means "space"

its not important if theres beat, or not
if the track provides "space" - its ambient

imo, of course

Points: 12920 Status: Lurker | Followup to hyakusen: #01010252

i respect your point of view but i think it's not the same
of richard james.
in fact he titled saw II an abum full of tracks without
beats and saw85-92 hadn't techno tracks inside too.

if richard thought same of you probably he titled analogue
bubblebath III, ventolin or joyrex ep selected ambient
etc... or something similiar.

no , he just titled the album- we all know that titles are
just titles, and to AFX the titles are nothing - just
titles
so even if album isnt called ambient it can be ambient -
check biosphere

offline WooferAttack from Milano (Italy) on 2003-12-30 09:59 [#01010274]
Points: 12920 Status: Lurker

so it's just a coincidence that saw85-92 and sawII has
tracks without techno beats? i know that for afx titles
aren't important, and he hate to catalogue music, but
selcted ambient works are ambient works and not techno.

offline hyakusen from 8=============> on 2003-12-30 10:03 [#01010279]
Points: 7021 Status: Addict

i didnt said that they are techno

what im trying to say is that "ambient" doesnt mean "without
beats " ( techno or whatever )
if only there is space , even provided only by beats - its
ambient

this is going to turn into a battle of opinions.

I think Ambient to me is more of something that is like a
soundscape, not necessarily beatless, just something more
atmospheric. and yes i know lots of music can be
atmospheric. this is a very tricky definition.
you want the defintion of ambient?

Ambient=SAWII

On=NOT ambient (except for 28 mix)

My fav Aphex ambient song? prolly stone in focus

At the time, SAW85/92 was classified as ambient techno.

Matchsticks probably, though Tha and Stone in focus are good
too. Rhubarb and Lichen are good too but I've just heard
them too damn often.

Can't pick. The furthest I can narrow it down is

Lichen
Rhubarb
Quino-phec
Stone In Focus
Blue Calx

Definately one of those.

offline Labium Sweat from United States on 2003-12-31 21:53 [#01012226]

Cliffs
Radiator
Rhubarb
Blue Calx
Curtains

Stone In Focus (The missing track on the CD version of SAW
II) (Why the fuck didn't they just make this a 3 disc set?
If Prince can get away with it why cant Richard?)

By the way, does someone know the title to that track that
has a picture that looks like a big rusty hole with
spaghetti looking stuff around it? If I remember thats the
longest track on the album.
