i finally got around to watching the extended version of
Alien3. In some ways i liked it a lot more. I appreciated
the expansion of the characters and the greater depth of
their interactions among eachother. makes them less like
cattle and more like people.

but there were some changes and additions i thought kinda
sucked. catching the alien half way through i think was
better left out of the film. especially since it escapes in
such a stupid way.
and i think the dog birthing the alien was a little more
dramatic and more realistic than the dead ox version.

i don't think it changes my opinon of it in relation to the
others though.. still 1 2 3 4 for me.

i deffinately like the directors cut of 1 much better.

this is going to be exciting. i love watching the
director's cuts of movies i've never seen. you're
impression of the movie is exactly what the filmmaker
wanted.

plus i've felt bad for being the only person to never see
any aliens movies.

I have the older box set of all 4 films on DVD, its not as
nice content wise, although it has all the extended
versions, but the outside actual box is nicer on mine

There's stuff on that legacy boxset that's not on the new
one so it's worth having. Being a sad git I have both :)

hmm.
well, i like the idea of them capturing the alien, with that
rapist guy sacrificing himself as bait. But i thought it
was a little silly to let Golick go when he is a murder
suspect. and have him release the alien so easily. If they
could have had the alien escape some other way, i thought it
would have been better.

quite some time before i get round to buying this box set.

ok, SPOILERS SPOILERS

alien 1 directors cut is really good, i think it makes it
much better than the original. little creepier i think.

Aliens directors cut adds some neat stuff the girl, newt's
family actually exploring that ship. and a few more meats
type scenes. I don't think it's all that much better, but
definitely cool for fans. more shooting!.

Alien3 extended is still not an official Directors cut. but
the added stuff really fleshes out the characters better,
and goes into a little greater detail about their histories.
they also added a scene where the actually catch the alien
once but it gets away. I personally thought that new scene
blows but there is some other good stuff added which makes
it a better cut over-all (my opinion)

The fourth is also not really a directors cut as much as
just an alternate cut. The director says the theartrical
version was just how he wanted it. but theres some new stuff
added including an alternate ending. I don't think it
imoproves the original version much.

is it solely new stuff put in, or were any weaker moments
cut out?

offline evolume from seattle (United States) on 2004-02-03 18:00 [#01059315]

so in summary.
the added scenes help out Alien 1 the most i think. the
others were good without it and didn't get a whole lot
better with it. not worse either though. eh.. naw Aliens2
got a bit better. yeah but not as much as Alien1.

yep

oh totally.

in part 3 they completely replaced the alien dog birth scene
with a completely different host. serious.

but in the others i didn't really notice anything getting
cut necessarily.

SPOILERS SPOILERS

that part, by the way, the ox instead of dog alien birth,
got much worse. i like it bursting out of a live dog better
than a dead ox.

just wondered if they'd re-worked the disappointing scene
near the end of alien where the creater is blown out of the
airlock at the back of the escape craft by ripley + for the
first time you see it in its entirity, dangling at the end
of a cable.. and it looks like a man in a black rubber suit.

nope that's the same. but the alien was supposed to
be man-like if you wanna get picky. it was born from a man.

the prisoners use the ox to move shit around outside
something else that is added.

the biggest movie-affecting changes occur in the Alien 3
extended cut. more than in any other special cut.

sure, it was a bi-ped (our depictions of alien life forms
are invitably limited by our own experiences) ..but it
wasn't born from a man. it was a parasite that incubated
inside him.. but genetically it had nothing to do with him.
..if you want to be picky.

:)

well, if you want to be picky,
Alien 4 supposes that there is some kind of genetic link
between the host and the alien. and the dog alien was
doggy like because of it's doggy / oxy host.
if you wanna be pickey.

but the writers hadn't thought of that spin on it when they
wrote the first film. lets remember that they were devised
with an overall concept in mind.
i thought the alien/human mixup (which went both ways in #4)
was a byproduct of them clonig ripley from the dna they had:
they weren't able to completely separate her genes + those
of the alien.. hence all the failed attempts pickled in the
lab.. and that stupid gormless alien/human child born at the
end of the film. the big thing with pale skin that looked a
bit like an anaemic pizza-the-hut from mel brookes'
spaceballs.

i don't want to be picky.. why do you keep asking me?

i'm just saying, since it's been added and accepted, it
becomes part of the Lore behind Alien thusly retro-actively
justifying inconsistancies or aging special effects
technique.

but yeah i know what yer saying. i'm just trying to start
some lively debate.

like when starwars toys and books get the Starwars seal of
approval and they officially become part of the starwars
universe, able to be referenced by any other part of said
universe.

well i watched the alternate version of Alien 3 again and
i've changed my mind about some stuff.

i think it is much better. Now, I actually kinda like the
added sequence where they catch and then release the alien.
This time, I paid closer attention to how they developed the
crazy character named "golic" and it now makes sense to me
that he would want to set the creature free.

i think i still like the sequence where the dog births the
alien better than the dead ox birthing it. but i don't
think the ox version is too much worse.

so aside from a few sticks of added dialogue, i think the
extended version of Alien 3 is much better.

not that anybody cares but yo.

yo
