I was skeptical at first, and so I did a lot of looking into this. It seems to be legit. If you have your own domain name you don't have to transfer it over, just point it to their servers.
This is a HUGE deal. Totally freaking free.
Free hosting!
The catch: You have to answer a phone call to get a pin number.
Solution: Use a pay phone or a phone you don't use
You never have to enter credit card information!!
Make sure to set your max chargable amount to 1.00 just in case somebody hotlinks your site, you can do this in the control panel
If you need to get a domain name check out Rackshack which will do it for 7 bucks or Namecheap which is 9

Looks good but I have no clue about this sort of thing either??
Would this be a good solution for just an artist page with some music on etc or should I just stick to free hosting sites like Wire.fm etc?
How long would it take to get it up & running (taking into account I know nothing)
Would it need constant upkeep?

Very good for artist hosting
You just need to put up a very basic web page and upload your files, put up links to them, and you're done (sort of like my current homepage)
Or you could just set it up as an ftp site and do the same thing
The tech support is good, most questions are answered, and it's really not that hard to get it up and running, especially if you know basic HTML
I'd be willing to answer questions or direct you to a good place to look

Check out Webmonkey too
It will take you a while to understand how to do everything, but it will be worth it in the end I think. It's not really hard to learn

did you read the fine print, after 3 years it gets pretty costly. 500mg/5gig transfer is okay for a single artist who just wants to host his tracks, but for my label, I have 1gig of space, 50gigs transfer for 10 bucks a month, which is a wicked deal. I'm using milescape like spoonz. And if you are putting a ton of stuff on your site (like an album a month) 1gig will get filled up pretty quick.

Definitly, if you're going to be getting a lot of hits you'll need more transfer and it isn't a good deal.
But if you're just hosting something basic, you really can't beat it
