From my knonwledge about it ( coz i know that some of you
would like to know this )

Samurai

All soldiers that were servants to shogun - even from the
lowest part of society - were in the same class of warriors
called buke , they were known as "people of war" -
bushi or wasarau, or mononofu

After year 1869 they were classified as shizoku -
"past army servants", but to all world they were known as
Samurai.

Samurai - "the one who serves" - is the short form of
goshozamurai - which was the name of leaders of
clans in ancient Japan, but with time all those who could
wear sword were called samurai.

They were classified with different ranks, categories and
such.
As it is told every samurai took swear on his masters life
that he will serve well, until death. Swear was took at
special ceremony - keppan - it was written with
warriors blood on special paper.

Lashing was so strong that with the death of leader
-daimyo - samurai, and sometimes even his family
took their lives by seppuku ( ritual of killing -
I will clear it later )
Every warrior was obligated to serve bujitsu- code of
warriors.

The way of the warrior

Fighting , using weapons, tactics - this was never main
purpose of bujitsu. It is supposed to be treated as
way to improve yourself. With this bujitsu is
rather a system of morality, ethic, which goes beyond simple
frames of world between peoples. This system is called
budo.

offline hyakusen from 8=============> on 2003-12-24 05:15 [#01004014]

Budo can be identified with motives of behaviors
of warriors , but mainly it should be identified with ethic
of armed leaders of Japan.

Rules

Main rule - to obey to your master. Warrior should have
faith in master when the times where good, and when the
times were bad.
Quote from bushido (written code of warrior
laws):

"warrior will never abandon his master, even when from 100
cavalry will left 10, and even when from these 10 only he
will still alive. He will defend his master till the end,
without paying attention on his own life"

Samurai should have modest life, he should
not feel the pain. He should eradicate fear of death.

Way of the samurai is the way of death

1.no
ninjas were te\reated as lowest part of society - they
worked in shadow and night - nobody could know their faces.
to be ninja it mean - to be born in nija family. there was
no other way to be ninja.
Samurai as a honorable warrior couldnt agree with someone
who is hiding his face wothout honor

2. pirates - even Japanese had their own - mostly they were
people under the law - like other pirates all over the
world. in fact they were pretty dangerous coz they had
nothing to loose :)
3. music - as many issues - was one of the part of
education of samurai. Not pnly fighting was their ability -
education was given very early - education means - literacy,
mathematics, music...stuff like this.

jacki chan has great abilities - kung fu is very powerful,
although most of his scene fights is created by
choreographer ( jackie himself )
kung fu is strictly full contact - knees, fists. very quick,
very agressive, very dangerous

sorry - i dont knoe fat sammo....

,,,maybe you mean sumo fighter - if so - sumo is other type
of fight - you cant compare them- different philosophy
behind, diferent rules, different people...etc etc.

ok, now we have seppuku or hara-kiri ( as
you like ):
This is a ritual of killing. It was treated as manifet
of power and free will, and greatest courage. It was a
priviledge (!)
At start it was pretty usual - with time this ceremony grow
to big event , available only to highest class of society.
Sepuku was made with special blade. basicly the
point is that source of oll vital power is in stomach. First
cuting went from left to right. Then, if someone was strong
enough( but it happened rarely )there was next one - from
middle to up larynx.

because this kind of death was long and painful, there was
allways another person - just after cutting stomach this
person made decapitation. This ceremony was so terrifying
that after some time it was prohibited, but it is well known
even today - some japanes soldiers were killing themselfs in
the face of loosing battle in second world war !!
