Aphex is a millionaire and I'm pretty sure autechre are. Now
that I live in such a cheap place I barely care about money
myself though, at least having more than I need or want
which isn't much.

autechre should simply stop looking into the medium of

in the animation medium but they didn't make it.

You're right, you should be ashamed for asking this.

Does it matter if they're rich or not? Would you perceive
them or their music any differently if they millionaires
than if they were paupers?

Why do you want to know? Are you working for the Inland
Revenue or something?

They would have to have sold about 50,000 (don't shoot me if
I am wrong) copies of each release as autechre to have sold
a million. There's no way they have sold a million.

"Does it matter if they're rich or not? Would you perceive
them or their music any differently if they millionaires
than if they were paupers?"

im sure top idm artists could be making a lot more money if
the wanted...but they apperantly don't.
and it makes difference to me knowing they're making music
cos they enjoy doing it, not doing it for the money.
that doesnt apply to their music ofcurse, cos when it comes
to music i either like it or i dont

If autechre wanted to make and keep the entire 16$
per cd they sell I see no reason why they couldn't have. As
soon as they became popular through warp, they developed a
dedicated fanbase. they then could have created their own
web page and sold their albums themselves with no
middle-money-man. It might seem impossible to burn 50,000 or
whatever cd's themselves, but mass cd creating
technologyxists somewhere, given that big labels are able to
manufacture so many. So why couldn't they invest in the
capital of such cd-making equipment themselves? There's the
problem of mass mailing so many but there must be an easy
way to do this too since people/companies mass sell cd's or
whatever on ebay.

someone sure as hell needs to re-design videogames from the
ground up instead of constantly relying on the available
culture to make short cuts. I'd like to dedicate my life to
this, but I'll see how lame I am with using computer
architecture later on. I reckon that most likely an equally
obscure videogame creator(s) exists of autechre quality
somewhere I havn't found.

How is global goon going to burn so many? And what is the
"dole office"? If musicians only make 1$ per 16$ through a
label, then they merely have to sell their albums for like 4
bucks each to still make a greater profit for themselves?

I believe on the live chat interview on warp they replied to
some question along the lines of 'yes, it's good to make
music for a living'. judging by that i'd say they get by. i
wouldn't think they are rich, but probably don't have money
problems too often.

How hard can it be to burn 7 copies for his preorder list?

The dole office is a club where you queue up to receive
social security benefit money.

Nothing wrong with a bit of money. Fact is they do what they
do and its rather good so let them have their rewards. I
don't give shit. I don't wanna be putting a clamp on how
much money people can earn. Fact is money doesn't make
everyone happy anyways. If you're a miserable sod in the
first place, all the money in the world wouldn't make any
difference.

They got record sales, live shows, merchandise, licencing

Most of these artists (Warp/Rephlex) don't earn shit. Aphex
makes big bucks 'cause his music gets licensed a lot and he
has the top sales. This topic has been done before anyways.
Mike P does about 20k or something a year. So thats the nub
of it unless the person making the music has a genius plan
he ain't gonna be rolling in it.

I imagine Rich has a considerable amount more than them...
they said in one of their interviews they do okay, but you
wouldn't think it to look at their bank accounts.

wMw - artists on labels like Warp/Mu/Rephlex make a much
better percentage from the label than 1/16th of the
profits... nearer to 50% I believe.

If all you really want is to spend most of your free time
"doing" music, so long as you have enough cash to survive,
buy some new gear and records every now and then, you're
laughing.

There is also a healthy scene of videogame creators who are
"outside" convention as much as Ae... check out
llamasoft.co.uk for a bit of insight.

Thanks for the llamasoft link! I downloaded the gridrunner++
demo. It's visually interesting and complicated in a simple
gameboyish kind of way, though I still don't know if it's
fun because I've only played it 10 minutes. That
messageboard should be a wealth of information too.
the most obscure games I've found, though I havn't done much
searching yet, were some "independent" game makers who were
on tech tv's videogame show I think who experimented in
weird ways, like simulating water with huge numbers of
sprites instead of polygons or something.

i wouldnt be surprised if the most autechre has sold of a
single cd is under 20,000 copies or so - i cant imagine
artists such as aphex and ae selling a ton - but thats just
my estimate

why dont we get some official statistics from warp on record
sales of ae, aphex, and squarepusher?

they dont do it for the money, they do it for the respect
