i read an interview where elijah wood said he likes squarepusher and some other warp sutff too.
thats pretty cool, gives him a bit more cred as a person.
saw some great stuff on the special features of the fellowship special edition.
he seems liek a cool guy to hang out with... very warm, good sense of humor.
i bet it freaks people out when hes playing bonneville occident in his trailor, though.

Being the selfish IDM fan, I don't like it when stars say they like electronica, because if it happens enough, you invariably have the utter-waste-of-life piece of shit fans that will start listening to a certain style of music because "dreamy elijah wood likes it!!!!1111"
That's cool that he likes it but he's got an obligation as a true fan to not spread that shit around too much ;D

Hmm.. I didn't realize that me feeling this way burries an artist that there is already a large following for. If you want Squarepusher to show up on billboards and be available in Walmart, then suit yourself. I would much rather less people find out about him than have his stuff turn up with the commercialized dross of the rest.

That's not what I'm saying (though for the most part the music I listen to isn't usually considered popular).
Electronica, in my opinion, is one of the last genres to not feel the swift and icy hand of corruption. I just don't want it to become yet another genre where artists that belong to it can get McDonalds endorsements and that it becomes "cool" to listen to. Whenever people are listening to music just because it is considered "cool", in my opinion they might as well just listen to dogfarts because it's not music they're after....

I know, it should be whether or not you like it, but I've known people who only started liking certain bands or music once it was "all the rage" (ie became cool) at my school.. That whole mentality really just annoys me.. And besides this factor, I just dont want to see electronica ruined by advertisements and commercialism, because in my opinion it does ruin it somewhat. Like Ceri said, it's the image you have mentally of them that is destroyed once you know they are doing advertisements for clothing lines.

if i was you, i wouldn't worry too much about what other people like (or say they like).. or why they like it. so long as you know your own mind.
and when aphex twin has been selling tracks to ads for years to make a quick buck - i don't see how electronica can sell out. its just not designed to get popular.
fashion-concious kids would have to try pretty hard to pretend to like it. its not the kind of sound you can just let wash over you.

zephyr: you REALLY think squarepusher will EVER sell that much?
you're a fool if you do.
every semi-popular movement in art and music EVER that has contained abstract or surreal tendencies has ALWAYS maintained the interest of a strong minority presence.
meaning: even if EVER boy toy on the planet loved squarepusher and promoted the crap out of him... he would NEVER be popular.
plus: if you believe in good art, you would know it won't be corrupted... even by popularity.

right, who cares really if music is popular... I like to think I like music because I like it... I personally find it cool whenever I see an aphex twin video on muchmusic back home... music shouldn't be about coolness or whatever, it should be about feeling and what effects you... I LOVE Hall and Oates... I really do, and I don't care... I also love Autechre and Squarepusher...

If aphex put some lyical vocals and cut a few of the abrasive segments out of windowlicker it could have shot through the charts. Success in art is about the suprises. All because you have abstract or surreal tendencies in your music doesn't mean if you tweaked it a little it wouldn't have broad appeal.

You're all MISSING the point! I listen to the music I do because I LIKE it, exactly what you guys are telling me to do. I was merely commenting on some people I've met that listen to certain music because it makes them cooler in their little cliques and circles (or because "stars" listen to it or endorse it). I admit its too much a longshot to ever worry about my favorite idm artists selling out. As for the comment (made by myself) about being selfish, it isn't to say that I don't spread IDM around. On the contrary, I do EVERY time I get a chance to show it to someone who I think might actually understand it. Maybe you all should read my posts. In the event that you did so, you might see that my fear is that electronica becomes commercialized, not that more people begin listening to it.
