Keiko Dies in Norway

I can't believe this story. I have followed this story for
years.....it makes me very sad.

Keiko, who was about 26 years old, died Friday after
suddenly contracting pneumonia in the Taknes fjord in
Norway.
Caretaker Dane Richards told The Associated Press that the
illness struck the 25-foot mammal fairly quickly as Keiko
appeared lethargic and lost his appetite. "We checked his
respiration rate and it was a little irregular ... he wasn't
doing too well," Richards said. "Early in the evening, he
passed away."

In the wild, orcas can live an average of 35 years. Keiko
was believed born in 1977 or 1978 off Iceland. The drive to
free Keiko, who was captured near Iceland in 1979 and sold
to the marine park industry, began in 1993 after he was
found ailing in a Mexico City aquarium. He was rehabilitated
at the Oregon Coast Aquarium, then airlifted to Iceland in
1998. His handlers prepared him for the wild, teaching him
to catch live fish in an operation that cost about $500,000
a month. That same amount paid for a year of care in Norway,
according to the Free Willy Foundation in San Francisco.
Keiko, which means "Lucky One" in Japanese, was released
from Iceland in July 2002 with hopes that he would return to
the wild. But he swam straight for Norway on a 870-mile trek
that seemed to be a search for human companionship.

The 6 ton whale delighted Norwegians when he first turned up
near the village of Halsa in late August or early September
of 2002. He allowed fans to pet and play with him, even
crawl on his back, becoming such an attraction that animal
protection authorities imposed a ban on approaching him. But
his choice of Norway, the only country that hunts whales for
profit, was a shock to many fans, who feared that whalers
would go after him. Orcas are protected in Norway, which
only hunts minke whales, and authorities assured the world
he was safe. Lars Olav Lilleboe, of the township of Halsa,
said it was a sad day for the town of 1,750 people, a mix of
rolling farmland and small mountains, so

........ some 250 miles northwest of the capital, Oslo.

"He is one of the biggest things to ever happen to Halsa,"
said Lilleboe. "There is no doubt that he has been a tourist
attraction."
Nick Braden, a spokesman of the Humane Society of the United
States, said veterinarians gave Keiko antibiotics after he
showed signs of lethargy, but it wasn't apparent how sick he
was. "They really do die quickly and there was nothing we
could do," he said. Braden said "it's a really sad moment
for us, but we do believe we gave him a chance to be in the
wild." David Phillips, executive director of the San
Francisco-based Free Willy-Keiko Foundation, said Keiko's
plight changed public perception of whether a whale could be
returned to the wild. "We took the hardest candidate and
took him from near death in Mexico to swimming with wild
whales in Norway," he said. "Keiko proved a lot of naysayers
wrong and that this can work and that is a very powerful
thing."

27 years for that species is much or not?

any person who says "its just a (fill in any animal)" shows
how ignorant\uncaring you are. if this was a human youd
care. anyone who ever says anything like that has no value
for any life.

The number of fucking homeless people in this country who
will die of pneumonia this winter and you feel sad for a
whale that had $500,000 a month spent on it.

Damn, that's some fucked up priorities.

no disrespect to kaiko (r.i.p.) - but that whale was sick
and lame after what happened to it in captivity. its a
wonder he survived as long as he did.
focusing on the plight of one (virtually domesticated) whale
just because it was used in a film detracts from the
problems affecting hundreds of whales.
we should worry about them as a species, not just throw a
lot of money at the rehabilitation of one.
countries like iceland are beginning to start whaling
again.. allegedly for scientific purposes. we must get this
thing in perspective. because of whaling pollution etc the
global whale population has have far more serious problems
than the demise of one orca.

Fuck whales, they are almost as bad as the country with a
similar name. I reckon they should all be harpooned and
then there wouldn't be any more moaning on about "Save the
whales" What happens if whales become extinct? I will
laugh that is what...laugh until I puke.

you cant feel sorry for everything. sure, sucks that he
died. but how many animals die every day? or humans for that
matter? just because this one is on the news i should, say,
care more? so i guess if i dont care, that means i dont have
value for life? sorry, but that sort of logic tips off my
bullshit meter.

its like the little kid in iraq who whad his limbs blown
off. the press got hold of that story, a big fuss was made..
money was donated & he was flown out of iraq for
operations..
what about all the other kids disfigured, maimed & crippled
in the war that didnt get the benefit of press coverage..?
oh.. i guess it doesnt matter about them.. as we dont know
the first thing about them. people only seem to care about
things if their pushed in your face.

same principle with kaiko.

Its was fucking hillarious when Keiko came here to Iceland
in ´98. A big village was built around as the government
thought he was going to attract a lot of tourism. That never
happened and people here have been making fun of it ever
since. The only reason Keiko was sent here to Iceland is
because he was starting to jerk of in front of audiences in
the aquarium he was in the US. So they made up a pretty
story that the hero in "Free Willy" had to return to his
natural birth place in the Atlantic Ocean. That was lie of
course but he really did "free his Willy" I guess :)
I totally agree its a ridiculous money to be spending on
just one animal. Nothing in the research they did on Keiko
that made it worth dishing that much out. The whole thing is
just plain stupidity......

Who says I would care if it was a human? Let's be honest
here, people are dying all the time and we don't really
care. There's too much death and bad shit to be able to
care about all of it.

I suppose the fact that this posting is about the worlds
most famous killer whale is of no consequence really, it
might have been about practically anything or anyone else
who was famous, a president, a film star.....there would be
the usual comments from some people here that would be in
bad taste.

I thought the story was sad enough to post here, and I guess
thats all that matters.

I don't care about the whales, I don't care about the squid,
I don't care about humans...all should be fair game.

addi : i love that story.

jedi chris : death IS a sad thing, full stop. personally i
wasn't trying to be funny. i was just making a comment about
keeping in perspective. that keiko's fame from being in a
film made his situation seem more important to a lot of
people than that of other mistreated whales.

ecnadniarb : a 'spakker' is slang for a spastic.. i don't
think that bob meant it literally. i think it was a metaphor
for your conduct. quite harsh on genuine downs
syndrome-ers..

bob: where do you go out in notts? moog? social? bomb?
rescue rooms (did you see squarepusher & surgeon there in
summer) ?

well I have been known to have muscle spasms and dribble all
over myself when I am monged out.

Also I would just like to point out that spastic was
actually a slang term for Cerebal Palsy not Down Syndrome.

good point
what was i thinking
getting my 'conditions' confused.. sorry
havent woken up yet..

no offence intended.

i did smile at the spasms & dribbling reference - i know its
wrong, but ive made my peace with it. besides, having worked
with groups of cerebal palsy & downs kids a few years ago -
i learnt they make much more sinister jokes about one
another than ive ever heard by any able bodied person.
