At the music store at my school there was a Polyphonic
Spree cingle cd or something for 99cents.. I was tempted to
buy it because my logic went something like this- "Hmm..
It's has the word Polyphonic in it and is going for
99cents.. could this be IDM?" But I'm guessing it's not?
What is this group?

I have 56k now so I can't really download music (or anything
over 100kb for that matter =P) but I wouldn't download them
even if I could, I trust your judgement, hedphukkerr ;)

are really a satanic cult.

the frontman used to be the frontman for tripping daisy..
they were sort of psychadelic rock. sounds horrible, but i
remember thinking their 95 lp 'i am an elastic firecracker'
was alright.. might have to dig it out & see if it was a
'time & a place'-thing..

i remember tripping daisy - i didn't know their frontman was
in polyphonic spree....

but yeah, tripping daisy was a decent band.

tim delaughter i think his name was.
always spoke about his wide musical influences..
guess he must have absorbed a little too much & lost his way
at some point.

i remember an interview with him years ago saying that texas
was a great place to be exposed to a wide spectrum of
musical styles.. as a resident, can you tell me if this is
true in your experience?

his idea of "wide" was probably country, rock, blues, and
rap.

hehe well of course it's just conjecture, I'm guessing he
probably had reasonably varied influences to change from a
trip-rock band to... what are they now? :D

i like the polyphonic spree because they are unique, upbeat,
positive, catchy, warm, friendly and sincere. they are a
fantastic antidote to all the transparent, phony, angry,
depressed rock music that seems so popular.

they don't make electronic music generally but the last
track on their debut is a 36 minute keyboard drone piece.

i've never seen "that commercial."

the live stuff i saw was pretty interesting. the were on
jools holland's show a year or so ago. nice to see
instruments like the theremin being used.
as a collective they seem to have a lot of energy and
attitude. but (from what ive heard at least) it didnt seem
to translate to an album experience. to me they appear to be
as much a visual phenomena as a musical one.

the first time I saw them it was pissing down rain. they
started playing 'it's the sun' and the clouds opened up and
the sun started shining.

it was a moment.

This band may not be completely terrible, but I've heard a
few of there songs on constant repeat from working at a
movie theatre (we have an intercom system throughout the
entire building that plays about 5 obnoxious songs on loop,
it's fucking torture), so I don't know if I'll ever be able
to stomach them for more than 30 seconds at a time... I'm
with mimi on that this band seems so gimmicky, and I hate
how all the vocals are the lead singer with a kid (or
someone who sounds like a kid) singing in unison with him,
it just sounds so fucking stupid-cheesy.

if you're jaded and cynical enough then sincerity is always
just another cloak for deception...

They are OK... I'd much rather listen to Spiritualized or
the Flaming Lips though, when I'm in the mood for something
psychedelic, rockish and weird.

it's a choir.

i wonder why people here don't hate idm for being so
gimmicky, but hiss and spit when artists with actual talent
create an orchestral band that can make it out of the
studio.

hey I don't have any problem with choirs, it's just that
this one is completely unenjoyable in my opinion. I also
find it fairly sad that you consider 'IDM' gimmicky.

offline plaidzebra from so long, xlt on 2004-07-27 07:01 [#01287414]
Points: 5678 Status: Lurker

it seems ironic that you don't hear that idm is loaded down
heavily with gimmicks, production gimmicks, editing
gimmicks, the backwards snares, the garbled voices, the
chopped breaks, the "futuristic" fonts, etc etc etc...

if the polyphonic spree depends on a gimmick, it's an
unlikely and unwieldly gimmick.

"let's have twenty five people in the band, and wear robes
and our hair long at risk of drawing comparisons to hippies,
the most despised stereotype in the west, and sing about
peace and love such that cynics all across the land will be
compelled to post how we should be put to death"

a sure-fire gimmick for success...

they're doing what they want to do, the way they want to do
it.

the music, of course, is an entirely different subject.

most of the things you call gimmicks can just as easily be
seen as conventions of the genre.

now, the album "nymphomatriarch" made by vsnares and his
then still girlfriend hecate, which was completely made up
out of sex-noises they made.. THAT is a gimmick.
it has little to do with the quality of the music, it just
makes it more "interesting" to some (and then it maybe sells
a few copies more than it otherwise would've).

my other post was a while ago, but i still hate the 'spree.
prolly cuz they had their music video on rotation at work (i
work at a video store). the fact that it was a video for
eternal sunshine just made it worse. how can they disgrace
such an amazing film with such a despicable song.

I guess it's just how you look at it.

like qrter said, I would consider those things
conventions... I consider electronica to be the bleeding
edge of musical expression, and therefore don't see it as
gimmicky.
