apple seem to love IDM

i work upstairs at an apple reseller; just wandered down
there before and not only is there royskopp - eple on the os
x installer, they have these rotating movies they play, and
there were tracks from different IDM artists; i can't pick
who, though. somebody walking in made a comment on the
music and that it was good.

i'm betting my arse idm becomes popular within, even, the
next 2 years. we're already seeing it a hell of a lot in
advertising marketed towards the higher consumer; 'smart
music'?

i walked into the local apple store the other day. while i
was there they played bjork, squarepusher, radiohead and
amon tobin.
i want to work there.

idm isn't going to become "popular" though, for the exact
reason that its used as advertising music. its not
associated with popular culture, its not danceable, and it
doesn't have particularly marketable artists either.
it might catch on more than it has with the emo/indie crowd,
maybe with some others as well, but i doubt it will ever
become mainstream. doesn't matter much.
whoops, theres already a topic on this.

dude, emo/indie *IS* mainstream. i find the term
'alternative' highly amusing.

popularising something isn't an issue, it's just that most
people seem to like crap. seriously. crap attracts. lets
just hope that 'idm' doesn't go down the toilet.

(GET IT I MADE A PUN?????)

idm needs a better name, anyway.

yes, emo/indie is currently popular, this is true. i guess
i'm saying i don't expect to ever see squarepusher on TRL,
to make an extreme assumption.
anyway, like alot of things, IDM is mostly crap, with a few
truly original, stand out artists. and the term itself is
hypervague. to apply it to both boards of canada and
autechre is funny, because they sound nothing alike, yet
both are associated with it.
other people on here have pointed out that the real problem
with this music, the thing that most affects the perception
of it, isn't the music itself, but the fans.

"it might catch on more than it has with the emo/indie
crowd,"

Sadly it has... read NME and you'll see (especially reader
reviews) are very quick to compare any emo with electronic
instruments to Aphex Twin.

Orange Company already used AFX track "to cure a weakling
child" in their commercial of a computer - and this happened
few years ago, right after releasibg the track

i think that idm will become more popular, but it will never
be popular as, for example , euro-techno.

Of course if artists like Ae or AFX will not stop making
music

i cant see serious acts like afx and ae wanting to keep
making music once it becomes much more popular and
everyones' making crap idm tracks....but experimental music
will go on forever in some form.

well i didnt said that they will do it because of some
purpose - just if they will be stiil doing what are they
doing now - IDm never becomes popular - people just dont
understand this music, and im speaking for my country ,
where Scooter and britney are on the top of popularity

afx, ae, pusher etc. are never going to sell out...if they
wanted that they'd do it already

IF idm music would become mainstream, not that possible but
IF you all guys would listen to britney instead.
phobiazero would change xltronic into poptronic and we all
would talk about "Oh, I heard enriqe iglesias at the apple
store the other day" & "I know a guy who works at apple, and
they play
oops i did it again everyday there.

yeah, you always hear electronic music played in
commercials... what needs to happen is that Aphex Twin, BoC,
Autechre, etc, some artist or group needs to release a real
catchy idm song... catchy enough to get popular, but still
idm so it reflects the so called genre, and then they need
to do a real good video with it, something a little more
mainstream then Come to Daddy or Windowlicker (both
excellent videos, but not something you're going to see on
heavy rotation really)... and I'd say once one Warp group
(or any other label) made it real big, the rest would
probably follow...

offline The_Funkmaster from St. John's (Canada) on 2003-12-12 04:19 [#00987803]

or, something like I mentioned one time before, a group like
Autechre could do a collaboration with some fairly
mainstream, but still credible, rapper... you know, some
real nice beats, with rapping over it... I'm always thinking
when listening to Autechre that they could be so big if they
did that... they make some of the best beats around, and a
good collaberation with some fairly popular rapper could get
their name out there more...

well, I didn't mean lousy rappers... and I didn't mean
they'd do it all the time... I just think it'd be cool for
them to do one song or something like that...

No, IDM isn't going to become popular. The fact that those
guys had IDM on their computer was amazing. It's amazing
because it's a rare occurence. And it's a rare occurence
because this shit isn't going to get fucking popular.

i think it's just a matter of some place and others, idm is
already kind of popular if there so much life on watmm and
xltronic, ebay and all...

and i think it's just a matter of time some of them will be
even more popular... see BoC, jimmy edgar,...
