90% of the time, a rock band is playing songs they've written and rehearsed over and over. maybe they have a tape with some chellos or something they can't really do live... so, translating that to electronic, i feel it's totally cool to pre-program all your patterns, patches, figure out your entire set, and then practice it over and over. what's not cool is to put up a bunch of modular synths while running the whole thing off a tape. then you're not a performer, you're a fraud. i've seen autechre live, and while they do it right, it's still not rock. it's natural to look at the stage unless you're off your tits dancing madly, and a rock band is a lot more interesting to watch. you can see everyone's hands as they play the tunes. with electronic, you can't see what they're doing. you can't see them pushing the buttons, just some elbows that kinda move. and this is much less interesting than watching some guy's hand weave over a fretboard as he plays arpeggios as the frontman makes sexual motions with the microphone. then there's aphex twin style. he hires 40 people in wheelchairs to run the visuals while he drinks beer and plays solitaire, but obviously a lot of work has gone into putting the show together beforehand. the visuals and the wheelchairs take care of the "what do i look at to cue in my limbic system" thing |
