Fly Or Die

i'm excited. additional details @ f2k

i know trent reznor will be happy that the neptunes are
playing all the instruments on this album.. he hated the
live instrument version of the debut (loved the programmed
original), called spymob "shitmob" to one of his engineers
who i know/knew

i hope lenny kravitz doesn't ruin the song he plays on

blah, I absolutely hate the neptunes... I don't see why
they're are so praised, I just find all their damn music so
boring and irritating... and that stupid Pharrell guy should
realize he can't sing, and should quit trying too!!

just my opinions of course!! :)

i think no matter what andre 3000 and N*E*R*D release you
will hate it. why? because you are a poser and you think
good taste in music is demonstrated by constantly bashing
what everyone else says is creative and high calibre.

now funkmaster i have no problem with because he's real. i
may not agree w/ his opinions but at least he likes and
dislikes music for valid, concrete reasons. it seems like
everything you criticize on here, theo, is for social
reasons (you want to set yourself apart, or should i say,
ABOVE). that's why people can't take you seriously. i know,
you could give a damn what we think, right? but you keep
coming back so obviously you have something to prove to us.

keep putting down good music. where's your critically
acclaimed masterpiece album?

they're doing something with U2? Hmmm, that might be
interesting... even though it's probably just U2 trying to
cash in on the Neptunes popularity and reach a younger crowd
I wouldn't mind checking that out...

I swear I'm not... I'm just a computer program... which
could still be real though... hmmm, nevermind! :)

thanks though, that's a nice thing to say... :)

I think they have began suffering from over exposure/copycat
artists, but at the end of the day they have made it on
talent, how anyone would want to call them shit just because
they got popular is beyond me.

Thanks for the heads up on the album.

while neptunes' production I dig..N.E.R.D I find a bit hard
to handle..Pharrell's vocals can go a bit over the top
especially with tthose high pitched falsettos....

but production wise

Has anybody else here heard the
Dizzee Rascal- Album Boy in Da Corner....
Some of the tracks could belong on a REPHLEX album..those
hard and punchy kick drum thangs...

rapping is decent, but the production is cool :D

i gotta give'em credit for the title though, pure class, it

come up with that

here

"I named it after one of our biggest fans," Williams
said. "Her name is Mildred and she has cancer, and the only
choice that she has with her spirit is to keep on pushing,
to fly or die. And the only thing we [can do] is to find a
cure for it."

don't barge in on people's topics if all you're going to do
is talk shit. don't like the band? then fuck off, no one
asked you to share your negative opinion on an album no
one's even heard yet. you can go be ignorant and closeminded
in an IDM thread.

haha how many times has this happened before? you still get
angry when someone disagrees with your musical taste? who's
closeminded here?

aparently you people are only permitted to respond if they
like the artist according to you.
i'm sorry, i didn't know only positive comments were
allowed,
it would make release/artist discussion threads and such
kinda worthless though wouldn't it?

i find the neptunes etc. annoying ('course it's a sliding
scale), i'm sorry if i hurt your feelings with that

get over it

ps. make a lame appreciation thread or something if you want

no. thoughtful comments of any variety i welcome. ignorant
put-downs you can save. they don't add anything and it only
makes it clear to other people that you don't know what
you're talking about. you only posted in this topic so you
could give me a hard time over liking this group. obviously
you don't have any interest in discussing their music (of
which you've probably heard two N*E*R*D songs, if that), you
just want to share some ill-formed opinion you made over a
year ago and have spit back many times without thinking any
further about it. other people can express themselves
intelligently and that's why i respect their differing
opinions on music. they didn't post to start shit like you
did and do on a regular basis when it comes to hip-hop
music. you, sir, really are a "Moron."

do you have the The Neptunes Present... Clones album?
it's a true mixed bag but some of it is really excellent. i
love the Fam-Lay track, it's so ghetto. there's a new
N*E*R*D song on there that i would like more if it didn't
use such an extensive sports metaphor (i'm not into
metaphor), but the pharrell/jay-z song "frontin'" is a
monster, as is the remix of clipse's "cot damn" (retitled
"hot damn"). has a nice variety on the album and hopefully
aussies get the bonus dvd that's with the album here.

i may never buy justified despite how good the
timbaland and 'tunes beats are that i've heard. i actually
like justin's singing in moderation (read: every once in a
great while i can get into it) but i can't see myself
putting it on a lot. prolly download it and see if my mind
changes.. justin wanted the neptunes to do a track that
sounded like mazzy star & radiohead.

i wanna hear the neptunes' new tracks w/ gwen stefani.. her
solo album is going to be nice if all goes as planned. i'm
not a big fan of no doubt but if you check the f2k link you
can see all the good musicians writing and recording with
her.

anyone else want to post about the article i linked in
message #1? as popular and critically acclaimed as the first
album was, this one MAY just be even better.

Sounds nice. I still like the 1st album alot, but i think
some songs suffer because of the 'heavy' guitar sound.
Things like rockstar... i hardly like that one at all. I'd
love to find the original programmed version someday (i
think i'd probably like it better, but ofcourse i'm only
guessing when i say something like that), but all i ever
find is the new version. Probably because they didn't like
the 1st version themselves i guess, no reprints most likely
:-(

It'll be interesting to hear the new album. I always thought
of NERD as a one time only side-project of the neptunes... i
certainly wasn't expecting another album :-)

Lenny kravitz is a good guitarplayer i think. He just forgot
how to write good songs in recent years :-p I think it could
work out ok. It's NERD who wrote the song right? he's just
playing on it.

surrounded, i bet used record stores have the original
version of the NERD album.. and you can always download it
(i have the original album on my computer, if you have
soulseek or FTP i can get it to you). also there's always
eBay.

judging by the article i linked, i think you can expect less
of a rock guitar sound on the new album. spymob are a rock
band really so that's why the debut teetered on the edge of
rap-metal at times (i still think the live instrument
version is brilliant, but i agree it has moments where it's
almost a bit much). with pharrell & chad playing everything
themselves you can expect more of their own influences like
the beatles, curtis mayfield, america, stereolab, led
zeppelin, michael jackson/quincy jones, etc.

lenny is a good musician for sure. as long as he didn't
co-write "Maybe" then 'maybe' it just might be OK :)

"used record stores have the original
version of the NERD album..
"

Now there's an idea...
I hadn't thought of that yet :-) Thanks, i'll check it out.
I consider downloading a last option... if all else fails.

I know it's probably all in the mind, and it's just me etc.
But I just find myself enjoying music alot more when i have
the actual cd.

"spymob are a rock band really"

Yeah but obviously the neptunes really liked their sound...
so who's to say they won't try to sound like spymob with
their own instruments? But indeed the article does seem to
suggest the new album will be in a somewhat different
direction... so i'm hopefull, and curious :-)

"so that's why the debut teetered on the edge of
rap-metal at times
"

Yes. Exactly. All those songs are exactly the ones i think
are the albums' weak spots. But reading that article, it's
almost like they wanted In Search Of to be the complete
opposite of their usual neptunes sound... so maybe that
explains the rapmetal-ish tracks. I hope they got it out of
their system now ;-)

yea they just wanted to do something different.. i mean the
neptunes production style has been stale for a couple years
now. only about 2 out of 10 tracks they do sound fresh and
unique, the rest are pretty much same old. so i really
admired them using live instruments. they improved on
something that was already great (some of their best "beats"
were written for the NERD album). they took a chance and
most people (not everyone) agree that it paid off big time.

you don't think "run to the sun" sounds better with the live
bass and drums? "baby doll" with the surf guitar?

dude.. wrong. that's not me at all. I love the neptunes and
I love andre 3000 but their albums fall short because
they're incredibly weak lyrically and their attempts to be
abstract usually backfire and the pretense comes first and
it's incredibly transparent... the andre 3000 album was
incomplete.. as was the nerd album.. they both needed a
second opinion and tie up the loose ends.. nerd can't be
trusted with their tastes alone.. look at the people they've
signed (the rock acts) - mind you, the people they work with
have commissioned them.. also, there's a song called
"thrasher" on the album.. that's a fucking joke. no skater
actually refers to themselves as a thrasher.. that's like an
x-games, mainstream media term used only by like espn2 and
6th graders.. they're good melodically and as producers..
but pharell is getting more and more irritating and his
lyrics are laughable

Titsworth you being the hip hop expert could you check out

P-Money

he is a bit of a local hero..he's won several International
Turntabalist Comps before he turned his hand at
producing...I quite like his stuff...especially his
turntabalist chops are quite..astounding...he is currently
masterminding the work of a local rapper called
Scribe
both the album and the single has been number 1 here for a
several weeks..a bit of an achievement since our charts are
so totally dominated by the American and UK stuff. In
particular the single "Not Many-The Remix" is the catchiest
mother fucker and shows off some quite admirable rapping
skills...
but that's just me..hence I am seeking your opinion..

i really don't mind most of the instruments/ musical
programming, and pharell is a decent singer, if you are into
that sort of thing, but one thing that always irritates me
is how the beats always sound the same to me.. they seem to
never change it up.. they just seem to put different sounds
into the same beat-template.. not that they aren't skilled
in making that type of music.. it's just that if there were
willing to experiment a bit more with the beats, and maybe
give some of them a bit more variation or different time
signatures or something, instead of just using that same
"kick - - snare - - pause - - kick-snare" thing that seems
to be on so many of their songs, and from other
artists seemingly trying to copy their sound..
if they were to change it up a bit more and challenge the
listener a bit more.. i'd give them more of a chance.. it'd
be refreshing to hear something from them without that
instantaneous-lock-on bop-your-head kinda repetitive beat..
but i suppose that is their trademark..
ah well.. this was just my two useless, rusty pennies..

hi flea, i'm listening to some audio on the p-money site. i
like it :) "remember" productionwise is quite enjoyable, not
anything groundbreaking or complex but definitely well
executed. kind of rza-esque in some ways, but half the speed
and relaxing. scribe definitely has some skills lyrically
and for a white(-looking) guy from oz he does a black new
york rapper perfectly (on "remember" anyway).

Q4Z2X, i definitely agree with you on the beats, they've
grown stale. i think the NERD album had some of their best
work though and i wouldn't be surprised if they've saved
more gems for the follow-up, especially since it covers so
many genres according to that article. i think part of the
issue is they make extreme/"out there" beats for rappers and
singers and they get turned down. that's what the debut
album was: the best beats they made for other people that
got rejected. a lot of commercial artists want a "#1 hit" so
they want it so sound like the last #1 they made, whether it
was for britney, jay-z, mystikal, snoop, whoever. but when
you're workers for hire like the neptunes you can't really
argue with the artist's decision. i think that's why the
justin timberlake album is so popular, even with
indie/"underground" crowds, justin was actually willing to
take some of their more experimental and different sounding
beats. another thing i read was a couple years ago someone
went up to pharrell and said he loved their sound; pharrell
asked what sound?, the kid does this easy immitation of a
kick--snare like you said, and then pharrell says in the
interview that from that day on the neptunes dropped the
sound that the kid made because they didn't want to box
themselves in. i still think they do have a formula but at
least they're conscious of recycling elements and try to
phase them out. if you want to give them a chance to
surprise you i bet this upcoming NERD album will be full of
detours from their usual sound.

i like this album quite a bit...i think it's great!
and i don't even like outkast (actually i totally dislike
