Seeski whatski Iski meanski.

you're not confusing slovenia and slovakia are you?
cos slovenia is pretty far i'd say :)

yeah, im sure we have lots of similarities in our languages,
i think i understand a whole lot more of czech than i do
polish...its quite weird actually, apperantly russians can
understand slovenian pretty well and i cant understand
anything in russian...but i can understand serbian very good
and serbs mostly cant understand slovenian, while they can
understand lots of russian...quite confusing actually :)

yep, finnish language doesn't really have any close
relatives apart from estonian.. and it has fairly
complicated grammar.

i said
'i don't think that any of you understands any of this'

finland can understand estonian.
estonian- the same with lithuania
lithuania - russian
russian-polish
polish- czech
czech-slovania

and the circle is going on.....

i (and most finns) can't really understand estonian... just
some words and sayings here and there.. and it's weird that
some shared words mean different things...

it's more common that estonian people understand finnish...
it seems it's easier that way round.. or maybe they just put
more effort learning it.

and is estonian language really related to lithuanian? or
does the estonian folks understand it because many of them
read/speak russian too?

no , these 3 countries have related languages. it is not to
easy to see, but like you say - here and there.

and by the way - it wasnt my country who started this border

ok, it must be that lithuanian is related to estonian, but
not to finnish i think.
i've never heard of it and i've seen quite a lot of the
charts and such about the relations & origins of
finnish/fenno-ugric languages..

these two?

offline fat kaimo from Finland on 2003-12-09 04:14 [#00982967]

finnish - hungarian, related: both fenno-ugric... but so
distant that really can't understand each other... still i
believe it is the closest after estonian. of official/big
languages anyway;
there are some small minority groups in the ex-soviet area
that speak languages much closer, but they are dying pretty
much.. mari, hanti... hm, can't really remember..

I saw a few words when I were over there.. don't have a
fucking clue as to what they mean...

Zloty (Zlote, Zlotych)
Wjazd
Pjazd
Wulkanovicja

Then there are the ones I (think I) know what mean, but I'm
not sure about the spelling... you've got lots of curls on
your letters:

Niegazovana (water without bubbles)
Gazovana (water with bubbles)
Sklep (shop?)
Opaki (buddies, pals?)
Resturancja (Restaurant)
Chin Dobre (hello)

Zloty - gold - zlato
Wjazd - enter - vstop/vhod
Pojazd - car - avto
Wulkanizacja - place to change tears in car - vulkanizacija
(isnt this an internatioanl expression??)
Sklep - shop - trgovina
Chlopaki- buddies - prijatelji
Resturacja - restaurant - restavracija

quite simmilar actually :)

these words ( we have many )

avto - auto
trgovina - targowisko
prijatelji - przyjaciele

i think that we could understand eachother :)

Ya. But while I were in Poland, I noticed lots of strange
food.. can you further explain the social status of these
foods (commonly consumed, newly introduced, and so-on)? (and
remember: I'm not saying norwegian food isn't strange
sometimes, but still.. i'm wondering about this food)

Banana-apple-orange-carrot-juice.
Orange & carrot-juice.
(Why does carrot seem to come with EVERYTHING?)
95% liquor in the stores ("Spiritys" or something)
Ketchup-chips.
Cheese-chips.
The purple stuff we got served everywhere.. mostly with
carrot on the side..
All the "zloty"-groceries (sausages, beer, and so-forth,
that you can get for only a zloty)

apperantly we could...but it looks much easier in writing,
well perhaps if you'd speak slowly :)

how about those vegetable, fruit names drunken mastah just
named?
banana=banana
apple=jabolko
orange=pomaranèa
carrot=korenje
juice=so
sausage=klobasa
beer=pivo

Banana-apple-orange-carrot-juice - mixed juice - what should
i explain ?
carrot is popular , but it is not with everything - :) in
polish :
"sok jabloko-marchewkowo-pomaranczowo-babanowy"

liquors ? simple vodka , we have plenty , polish ppl's drink
more vodka than beer

chips - frytki
with ketchup - z keczupem
with cheese - z serem

purple stuff ? probably you mean lettuce of somr kind

and you cant buy anything for zloty - to buy beer you will
need 3 zlote for example. for 1 you can buy 2-3 pack of
matches
