Kid Koala - Some of my best

..friends are DJs.

This is the new album from Kid Koala... well worth checking
out if you like turntabilism or jazz and can appreciate
playful music. I always liked Carpel Tunnel Syndrome, but
felt that the loose, lazy style to it wasn't entirely
intentional... it lacked a certain something and it seemd
like kid's skills were slightly lacking (they weren't- he
won DMC one year). This is a similair style but executed
much more skillfully, being a lot more listenable whilst
still retaining the "not too serious" style that made the
first album such a novelty.

is this the one that comes with a fat comic book too, or was
that just a promo?

i've been thinking about whether or not to get this because
while i admire, respect, and appreciate koala's first album,
i never put it on. i like his various collaborations with
automator a lot more because they make for great albums and
they still show off his amazing turntable skills. now ceri
do you think his new album is one i'd actually put on to
listen to like i would an aphex, bjork, outkast, etc. album
that has a lot of variety but is very cohesive and
enjoyable? btw i read your hip-hop email the day you sent
it, i didn't reply but i made a note to check out that album
when i get home and can use p2p over break.

Yep that's the thing I really like it - it's that kid koala
sound, but a lot more listenable. One of my main criticism
of a lot of turntable music is that whilst I find it
interesting from a technical point of view and like the
sounds, I'll rarely listen to a whole album (apart from
"Built from Scratch" by the x-ecutioners... that gets
regularly played) and tend to only like one or two tracks
off them. As it happens I burnt a cd-r of a load of standout
"listenable" turntablism tracks earlier this evening :)

Did you see my post re: Qbert & Automator- Bear Witness
yesterday?

Anyway, in answer to your question, I've been listening to
this one and whilst some of the skit like bits of dialogue
ar ea bit long, you don't find yourself skipping them.
There's the odd duff track like Space Cadet2, but most of
the album is very good. It flows very well and you can
certainly sit and listen form start to finish (especially as
it's only 35 minutes long!)

yea i saw it and replied (that post)

i might pick up that koala album then.. at the very least
i'll download it and give it some listens. thanks.

btw some of the stuff on rob swift's solo album from last
year is very cool.. check out "salsa scratch" and "in the
ghetto" .. i think the x-ecutioners' greatest strength
asides from their awesome scratching skills is, like dj
premier, they pick the perfect LYRICS to sample to spice up
their songs

Yes, the lyrics to x-ecutioners stuff are so catchy... it's
almost like pop music, I find myself singin under my breath,
"You, You... You can Run, you can run, run, but no man, no
man, no man is safe." I think their other great strength is
using some standard scratch samples, but scratching them in
unusual ways to stop them sounding samey.

I've heard one track of that Rob Swift solo album and liked
it, I'l have to check it out.

i love this album. and i can't honestly say i had really
gotten into too much kid koala until he came to calgary with
the "short attention span theater" tour. oh my god. it was
just incredible. probably the most fun show i've ever been
to. and watching him and dj
whatshisfacewho'snameisuddenlycan'tremember was just
incredible. such a good show. and that's when i became a
fanfan. but i enjoyed this album quite a bit. just super
mellow, chilled. nothing super-fancy. and that's kinda nice
for a change.

soundtrack to it

i love Kid Koalo's Lament on the Lovage album, and i must
say i'm intrigued by the comic and chess game editons to his
latest release. this is just with the regular copy or are
those only included in some sort of special edition?

So far as I know, the comic comes with all versions. I don't
know if there are two possible versions with the vinyl
version this time round (on carpel tunnel syndrome, some
vinyl releases had a comic book the size of the CD one,
others had the same comic, but larger in scale).

Did anyone hear him on Radio One last night?

I heard Mary Ann mention something about an album he intends
to release in 2009 that's a sort of murder-mystery album,
made entirely out of snippets of old records of course :)

Should be interesting!

I didn't know he was on last night, I'll give that a listen
from the archives tommorow. I love the way his albums are
planned out years in advance :)

he's Canadian ain't he?

I have Carpel Tunnel Syndrome, and like you Ceri, I can
appreciate the whole thing with DJing, and I love watching
DJs perform, but I find Carpel Tunnel Syndrome a little hard
to listen as an album... as said, it's a little more novelty
then anything else I guess...

I'll definitely keep this one in mind though!!

I got the basin street blues Ep with the video / cartoonish
New orleans funerals with a jazz band. Really good with the
music ; I'm not sure he did that by himself.

Just heard that... he's like a big kid, it's great, he had a
gigling fit when Mary asked him about murder mystery album
:)

Thirdball, is he as nice a bloke as he seems?

I've seen him on Muchmusic a few times, maybe even before he
was on Ninja Tune... hmmm, no he must've been on Ninja Tune
cause he was talking about Carpel Tunnel Syndrome... he
seems like a nice chap! :)
