i downloaded something by philip glass today, 'einstein at
the beach'

i dont know :/

it has a lot of voices thrown over nice melodies.. its
driving me insane, making me feel uneasy but i cant stop
listening to it.

anyway, what is other good stuff by him? i dont know
anything about him, exept for the icct hedral orchestration.

naaah, go for City Life.

you'll like it - he uses quite a few samples in that, in a
great way.

Philip Glass' LOW SYMPHONY is very good! I'd strongly
recommend the LS work if you want to hear some good Glass.

Yes! City Life is great. I just heard City Life and
Different Trains live. Excellent.

If you like Glass, Reich and Nordheim, you probably like
Terry Riley and Riuichy Sakamoto too.

different trains is not with pat metheny, electric
counterpoint is. ill see that live saturday btw.
i like early glass best, at the moment, so that's this cd i
have with music in contrary motion and 2 pages and in
similar motion. also on standard symphonies, second
symphony, second part mostly, that's very stardard but very
good melodies, like icct hedral, maybe. second on my glass
list is and always will be the dracula soundtrack with the
kronos quartet.
einstein on the beach sounds like shitty 80s stuff to me
btw.
reich on the other hand seems to get better in time.
still: i'd listen to the counterpoints (violin especially),
that's real minimalism like those early glass things.
furthermore i liked sextet and desert music when i heard
those the other day during the reich festival :)
im sorry i missed the documentary on city life yesterday,
because that had the whole piece performed in it, or played
back.
i did see the cave though, that was great too.
reich is pretty much an american: the way he walks, his
baseball hat and he hugged the conductor (rheinbert de
leeuw) after the performance i saw, that was fun. during the
performance he was sitting behind the mixer btw, that was
fun too: he's just a nerd like us :)

I heard they performed New York Counterpoint last week using
samples of clarinets.

what a dumb idea. :(

what's it originally than?
all that tape stuff is like samples anyway? wasnt it the
original instrument now done by clarinets?
i didnt really like tehemin, what's it called, by the way.
if im going to see minimalism i want just that, apparantly,
the cave sure was that, also it was only 3 euro's with my
pauperpass

it is written to be played by 9 clarinets and 3
bass-clarinets.

but since this can pose a problem, what has been done a lot
is one real clarinet and the rest recorded to tape.

this is still very different to completely sampled and
played on keyboard - whoosh! gone is intonation and
subtlety.

on a keyboard you can only really differ in volume - that's
it.

i used to write essays and public speeches on aphex twin
discussing his ambient music in class. i always got As and
everyone didnt know what the fuck i was talking about.

haha.. yea for this essay we also had to do a 10 minute
presentation.. since it was a music theory class everyone
got the basic idea but i got the feeling that what i was
playing was a revelation to almost the whole class (of about
13)

you might also enjoy the history of IDM paper on the same
web page.. it's very scholarly and well researched in my
opinion

yes, i see, it was keyboard than. that's the exact same
setting as electric counterpoint, only that was with 9
electric guitars and 3 basses, yes? i didnt know that was
ever done with all those live. the violin phase (which i
meant earlier instead of counterpoints) surely hasnt been
done live, i mean those very slightly changing parts?

well, it is shit-hard to do.

so mostly it is done on tape. but you need a real instrument
to give it the depth it deserves.

i thought violin part was written specifically for one
violin player and some tape recorder(s?) designed to
playback in a loop (effectively a delay unit)....

me too, that's why i was surprised by qrter saying the
clarinet thing can be done by 12 clarinets live, because i
thought those counterpoints were meant for tape with one
live performance too

I'm fascinated by this form of music theatre - the
documentary style is a real new slant.

and I only discovered a few days ago that Beryl Korot, who
made the video's for both The Cave and Three Tales is
actually married to Reich.

on the subject of Glass, Reinbert de Leeuw, the leader of
the Schönberg Ensemble (who have worked a lot with Reich),
has said how he dislikes how people mention Glass and Reich
together. he thinks Reich is much more interesting, Glass
just repeating the same little trick over and over.

I must say I agree.

offline big from lsg on 2003-12-09 07:41 [#00983129]

yeah, but i still like glass better, maybe somewhat more
expressive and the mood im searching for
i dont think you can find one thread, in the many, here in
which only one of the two is discussed..
i dont know this Nordheim fella, im afraid, is he good?

Can't say Glass ever really moved me or even sparked any
interest although I have really tried to get into him. In
the end apart from the odd piece I don't think there's
anything to 'get into' at all.
