I hate America

Well not America as such but more Americanisms in
language...I hate it all. people are even spelling stuff the
American way, like nite etc...it should be night. I hate
all words that became popular in America and are now using
in the UK.

Blah blah blah...I shouldn't be stoned at 8:50am but I am.
I have a meeting in 2 hours :D!

we don't spell night "nite" here. that's dumb kid talk,
internet slang, and writing shorthand. it's not an
"americanism".

Well shut my mouth :D

Is that real? I have always been led to beleive that nite
was an accepted American spelling. Also catalog without the
ue at the end...is that the same deal? Also Jail, that
should be speld geol, but I might let you all off with that
one because geol is a stupid spelling. Also is thru just a
stupid fake shorthand as well?

"catalog" is accepted american spelling.

nite and lite are abbreviations used only in advertising

now the analog / catalog thing is real.. we do drop those
last couple letters sometimes but it's not all americans who
do it. some people don't know that's not the right spelling,
others just prefer it shorter.. who knows

thru is shorthand

i hate america with a passion. not the people of america
mind you.
its not their fault they were born on media tainted
brainwashed backwashed soil.

GO CANADA EH!

we have so many more rights here, i can safely say i feel
like a free man

i don't like how when i'm using microsoft word, it corrects
"grey" to "gray" and "colour" to "color"..

i don't understand why the spellings ever would be changed.
i prefer the original way for the most cases.

I was watching Letterman before and they had a stupid
catalogue section but they spelt it with a ue on the end
which I thought was strange. Just goes to show what happens
when we are bombarded with US based advertising, it leads to
ignorance like I've just displayed :D

OK I wanna change this thread to include include hating the
new move to get TXTING slang added to the dictionary because
it is in such major use...fuck that, I don't want stupid
letters replacing words.

Assuming all Americans are brainwashed just shows that
you've been a little brainwashed yourself. Even more so if
you hate Americans "with a passion" based on that
generalization.

You must have the Word dictionary set to US, because if you
have it set to International it doesn't change the
spelling.

This year was also the first year I really noticed all the
shops changing from an autumn sale to a "fall sale"... we
seriously are becoming a little America.

well it has no international/english setting, so i just set
it to Uk.

fall is really a much worse word for it than autumn..
i should have known that only americans would be behind such
a stupid word to describe it..

You must have the spelling set to US by accident, because
with the UK dictionary it doesn't change those words. I
dunno on older versions but on Word 2003 you can check the
language being used on the status bar at the bottom of the
window.

yes. i live in the states. i can feel the shame.. so i put
some in some stupid silliness to cover it up.
also, i dislike the united states for the most part and,
incidentally, american spelling.
i also dislike when people, especially americans, consider
their country, and only their country, to be america..
i thought the whole continent was america?
i don't have any problem with south america or the majority
of north america, it's just the rules and "ideals" held so
dearly by most of those between mexico and canada that
usually make me cringe.

this board is my refuge.
i don't even know a single soul in real life that listens to
electronic music.

I think it has got to the stage where Americans have started
to feel it is dirty to be patriotic. There is nothing wrong
at all with national pride and diversity...just go with the
flow and enjoy the mix.

countries like honduras.

I've noticed that Americans pronounce Oregano in a peculiar
fashion.. oREGano, rather than oreGAno.

Also, nite wasn't first used by advertisers, and it
wasn't first used by teens who either couldn't spell
properly or adopted it for stylistic reasons. In fact,
nite isn't even an Americanism, it just became
popular there, I guess. As for lite well that is just
annoying!

I am a well known spelling and grammar nazi (who is often
seen as a hypocrite because I often type very badly.... but
typos and spelling mistakes are not exactly the same....but
I digress...) so that kind of shit - aluminum, nite, thru
etc piss me off greatly.

But there's nothing anyone can really do about it and
getting irritated doesn't do anything except make you
feel...irritated.

What pisses me off the most is inappropriate use of
apostrophes.

There's a solarium place near work that proclaims SOLARIUM'S
proudly.

A plural does not warrant an apostrophe, idiots. I should
let them know that a 20 year old simpleton (ie me) has
better grammar than whoever did the sign for the company.
And I guess anyone else who works there who failed to point
it out.

Yes, let them know, it's your duty. I've noticed people
using apostrophes in plurals a lot recently...incredibly bad
grammar. I am interested in maintaining correct spelling and
grammar and syntax also... I have, however, no problem with
"thru" or "nite" and I often use them myself.

essentially thats what you're saying when you generalize the
