haha you respond to felling as though you are being attacked
by making a crass generalisation yourself.

Also if you actually bothered to read the thread you would
have noticed that nobody from the UK has had a go at
Americans in any way shape or form. My point was the mass
British adoption of American culture in place of our own, a
totally different subject.

Also, nite wasn't first used by advertisers

i didn't say it was FIRST used by them. take it from someone
who actually LIVES here that the only time we see it spelled
"lite" or "nite" is in ads (whether from a corporation or
for a production of a play or something small like that).

In fact, nite isn't even an Americanism, it just became
popular there, I guess.

don't make things up..

"take it from someone

That was a cold comment to make to Paul of all people...you
should hang your head in shame.

my whole feeling about American people is that they're
ignorant, yet also arrogant

anyone else see the irony in this statement?

America it is taken in the context of the United States of.

gov'ts for the most part are shady organizations. like
giant corporations with historys spanning back centuries.

i firmly believe that america is not the worst. in fact, i
think she's better than most. it's just that we're really
the only superpower right now, so every decision, every
action is victim to the scrutiny of the rest of the world.

oh well, we'll fall sooner or later, and one of you other
guys will be forced to justify every single thing you do.
are your gov't the model of perfection?

Don't turn this into a pro/anti America topic...The people I
have met from the US have all been nice enough...maybe I
should have chosen the topic title I little bit more
carefully :D

america is a continent divided in north america, central
america and south america

in north america there are two countries:
canada and the united states of america

usa is in america.
usa is not america

no, it isn't, but people associate it as such. canada is not
talked about and south america seems to be irrelevant in
these conversations. i'm not saying its right, but its true.

had a go at America have been natives of North America
themselves :P

right, whatever. i was saying in the whole of this board
thats an attitude i've seen. rereading your topic starting
post your title for the topic is not exactly appropriate
though, and thats more or less what i was responding to.
in terms of "american" cultural trends invading the rest of
the world, i do see what you mean and dislike the fact. its
alot worse in places like japan where youth spend thousands
of dollars attempting to emulate everything they see to be
superficially western, while basically forgetting their
cultural roots. having been to the UK, i didn't really see
anything distinctly american about the language, or the
written form of it, but that was awhile ago.

Pakistan is part of the Indian subcontinent but India is
still referred to as India as that is what it is called.
Dropping the "United States of" from the beginning of
America has always been done and will continue to be done.
Protesting otherwise is just being pedantic.

not part of the discussion. its obviously not "irrelevant".

I can see your point, there is a lot of negativity towards
the USA on the board, but in most cases it does come from
the natives more than the foreigners.

C'mon people, are you actually saying that you hate an
entire culture (if it can be called that...) due to a couple
of letters?? Did it ever occur to any of you that due to the
pronunciation of the word "log," that maybe the "ue" really
wasn't necessary? Also, I'm not sure about the UK, but in
the US, "colour" would technically be pronounced "col-OWer,"
so if you look at it like that it makes since that we drop
the u. Why bother adding more letters if it doesn't change
the pronunciation at all (this is not to say I agree with
nite and thru). About the comment of people from US not
giving their location.. what the fuck does this have to do
with anything? Do you honestly care if I'm from Denver or
New York? I don't think it really has anything to do with
being ashamed (although I am of living in the US). Still
though, all I can say is grow the fuck up if you actually
care about a difference of TWO LETTERS.

Again, another person jumping on the defensive and
completely missing the point of the topic...

1) You descibe yourself as being from the US of Anus.

2) The topic was not anti American culture, it was against
the adoption of American culture in place of our own
national identity. You can spell and pronounce shit exactly
the way you want to, I just don't want it replacing my own
culture.

i do have to ask though: are a couple of letters really your
"culture"? i've been to the UK, it seems to have developed
its own national identity, even if that fits into a larger
wester identity that the USA is aligned with.

Ok ok, culture was a bit too broad of a term to use, but my
point remains. You actually spend time giving a shit
about how a couple words are spelled. Why is it so hard to
accept that just because our (US and UK) language is
essentially "English" everything has to be exactly the same?
Do you also hate how we say "elevator" instead of "lift" and
"truck" instead of "lorrie" (sp?)? I wasn't trying to be
defensive, I just feel there are a lot more important things
in this world to worry about.

Yes, I describe myself as beign from the "US of Anus" I
particularly am ashamed a lot of of my country's policies,
but I think we have done some pretty good things too, and
really my location has to be taken with a grain of salt.
However, what I was actually saying is that your location
really doesn't matter at all anyway. You know I'm from
America, and I doubt it makes any difference to you what
part.

Again I haven't got a problem with you all using whatever
words you want to use. What I hate is the use of the words
in Britain in place of our own. Autumn has became "the
fall". Going out and picking up a prostitute is now called
"a paid for date". TV is dominated by shitty US shows
because it is cheaper for the TV companies. I just don't
want to be part of a nation that no longer thinks for
itself, which this issue, while not directly the cause, is a
symptom.

Well, I've seen "nite" in plenty of poetry and literature
from America... for instance, read some of Jim Morrison's
poetry.

And "Nite" ISN'T an Americanism... I've seen that spelling
used in 19th century English Literature.

i agree nite isn't an americanism and that some poets use it

no hard feelings about the living in america thing, i'm just
making the point that i wouldn't claim to know exactly what
happens in any country i don't live in

It's like "lite", as opposed to "light" and you're right,
most people don't use that, it's more a corporate thing.
IMO, "Lite" is slightly more valid than "nite", as it has a
subtly different meaning, especially in relation to
software. It's a sort of term for "less feature rich", which
does make better sense than "less weighty" as "Light" would
imply.
