when i played afx's "mont st michel & st michaels mount", he said that if he closed his eyes during the tail end of the track, he could almost see an enormous insect beating its wings..
what do you "see" when listening to afx (or anyone else)?

haha kidding the coolest was one time i fell asleep to tool's lateralis, i believe, i saw, on the cool part of that song, sort of like fireworks but then as computer animated stuff, like the form of the 'tree' of that black stuff in that glass in matriculated in the animatrix (i must have seen more of those images) in black and white, that last thing was most striking actually. when i tolled a friend about it he said something like boys dream more of that sort of mathlike stuff in black and white and girls in colors, that was an interesting thesis

i was half asleep once with icct hedral by afx on really loud & i could see some kind of creature crawling along the ground.. dark shapeless forms moving toward me. hard to describe really.
if im dozing with boards of canada on i feel almost as though im floating a few inches between the soft grass & a blue sky.. with mountains in the distance.
numbers and colours crop up a lot. shapes writhing around to rhythms..
i'll think of other examples eventually.

i remember one time falling asleep to saw2 and having one of those crazy "false awakening" dreams, and in my false awakening i was in my room watching a part of star wars (the original) id never seen before and i had two dicks. that was, the least to say, pretty fucked up. o yeah and in the initial dream, tragedy took acid. hahahahah!

do you know that video 'when the sun goes down' by cassius, i believe that's great
all my incredible dreams can be derived to more earthly stuff, like stuff i saw on tv or the theatre
so seeing that on boc, fits pretty well what they think of their music with titles as in a beautiful place out in the country
i like the math stuff, numbers ive never seen my most spiritual dream was when my gardian angel manifested itself to me: i was swimming deeper and deeper into the ocean, though it wasnt really getting colder, just the ocean getting more beautiful deeper blue. i was swimming from dangerous stuff like fire and explosion above the surface. i wasnt afraid of drowning. then i felt a hand, the precense of it, about to be put on my shoulder, i felt the love coming from that. then i woke up feeling happy and warm
the deep blue is from the movie the deep blue, by luc besson
the fire is from true lies the love is more interesting: when i was little and lying in bed, i snuggled up, feeling safe underneath the blankets, but still feeling i could be stabbed in the back (but wouldnt because i was at home and because of the blanket..) i pulled away then, shivering, from the blade. that love thing was kinda like the oppesite of that pulling away
:)

jivverdicker - im not on 'drugs'
horsefactory - thanks for reminding me of that word, id forgotten it..
big - i guess the boc thing makes sense, though it predates the release of abpoitc.
the math stuff is good - ive never been comfortable with math, but somewhere in that interim between being awake & asleep, with the right music on - it makes sense.
i guess thats the good thing about dreams though.
know what you mean about seeing your cultural repetoire of films, books, tv etc reflected in your dreams.
odd feeling.

I swear that I get this really weird "de ja vu" feeling when I hear some IDM stuff...
I know I've heard it before somewhere...
One time when I was listening to Grass (Dsk 1 Trk 4) from SAWII, I saw this really dreaky mental picture of like a cloudy day, and a strong wind whipping through a field of that really tall, wispy brown grass. There was forest surrounding the plain of grass, and in the distance, there was this really freaky creature coming towards me.
Half of its head was missing, and it had like long black hair and sort of a metallic face. Its arms swung back and forth and every step it took showed its menacing authority. The plain was sort of claustrophobic and there was no way out, meanwhile this thing was getting closer and closer...
....freaky.

Chiastic Slide puts me in an abandoned old machina city. I can feel the rust scraping between my teeth. Love love love that album and all that crunch.
BOC puts me in the country or a wasteland. AE and BOC are the most visual artists for me, but everything makes me imagine something. And every song and album I've ever heard have a ''color'' assigned to them. And I always get vivid mental images from the lyrics, they always paint a picture in my head... 'natch.

Vespertine was recorded mainly in Newyork, summertime, the credited collaborators are from San francisco. There's no 'Ice' there... do you feel it's 'exploding energy' from bjork or are you projecting your own things on this album?

hi
you really think there's no ice on vespertine? i find the beats to be some of her most fractal and glacial.. i agree it's a bjork stereotype that things are icy but on this album some of the beats match that description (some are REALLY warm though)

I remember making beats/sounds for people to listen to, sitting inside with hot chocolate and marshmallows watching the snow fall. There was ice, but no juxtaposition of warmth. It's 'nice' but it doesn't pull in any other ways. probably I'm really stupid... I felt it a different way.

after i posted that i put vespertine on since i haven't listened to it since july.. i half take it back, it's a lot more warm than it is icy (even though it's a "winter" album). i think the pads toward the 2nd half of the album and a lot of the bassier synth lines throughout make it warm even though without them some of the drum sounds might be kind of cold. it's not alienating rhythmically like autechre, it's pretty inviting.. but there's something about it that's different from her other albums, i'm not sure what it is exactly but i do like it a lot. icy's a bad term for it but it's not in your face beats like homogenic or accessible house/club/techno like a lot of the songs on post and debut.

i'm fully aware of where it was recorded, but i think the intention of that particular album is to invoke a wintry mood, one of fable to correspond with the serenity of the domestic life that is a theme of the album. plus, listen to aurora and tell me its not icy. it is a cliche for her music, but in this case i think its true.

i also am projecting my own opinion onto it, as all music is subjectivly experienced anyway, and i once went walking after a fresh snowfall with vespertine playing on a portable cd player. fit the mood perfectly.

you don't have to offer anything.. i never got "first play.mp3" anyway, it was 0 bytes and you didn't send it to the other ftp..
barney seems nice to me but a bit full of himself.. but maybe that's just him as a professional, not as a human being. i look forward to his next film since i don't think he's done anything outside of the cremaster cycle.. i wonder how it feels to be done with that after living w/ it for 10 years.

it does have "warm" beats, but the visual i get is one of snowfall, ice, and mythical frozen over landscapes. cocoon may be the exception to this, despite the clicking beat, its too warm of a song to be anything but what it describes.

i get the snowfall imagery too but instead of feeling like i'm outside i feel like i'm inside the house with the heating system cranked up and a fire going.
i think maybe the strings and choir vocals are the coldest aspects of the album.. but still the songs remain relatively warm

yeah. i see what you mean in that in terms of sound the album is actually quite warm, but, as the topic says, the visual i get is just the opposite, but a warm wintry visual nonetheless.
and, speaking of bjork, i can't seem to stop listening to "our hands". this is like the seventh or eighth time in a row i've listened to the song today.
