thats why I only said five because a lot of people here seem
to think it's only males that make good music.

Leila,
Jennifer Charles,
Beth Gibbons,
Miss Kitten,
Nicola Kuperus.

Those last four all for their singing rather than "making
music".

1. Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth, Free Kitten...)
2. Björk
3. Yoshimi P-We (Boredoms, OOIOO...)
4. Elizabeth Frazer (Cocteau Twins...)
5. Claude Sarne (12 Rounds), or Noriko Tujiko

i also like the voice of the girl with Tricky (in Maxinquaye
at least i don't know is she's in the other albums as
well)...

ooh liz fraser that's a great one people have somehow left
out.. wow. i wonder what she's up to lately? do you think
the cocteau twins will reform? i love their 'victorialand'
album, i need to buy some others.

frankly i'm surprised you can't name dozens of female
artists you like, uzim.

the girl who used to sing on tricky songs originally was
martina topley-bird (who has a solo album now and has done
collabs on albums from people like david holmes), but on
tricky's most recent album he has a new italian singer
named... (google searching) Constanza Francavilla

goldfrapp is good.. do you honestly think norah jones is
anything special though? i think she's really bland. i'd
much rather listen to "the real thing" than a (bad) remake
of the style.

ah, yes - Alison Goldfrapp, Beth Gimmons i forgot them... :
)

titsworth > yeah ' _ ' there aren't THAT many female artists

by the way i'm wondering something about Tricky - i read he
said in an interview that he hated when people were
comparing him to Portishead... but he did a "musical cover"
(or rip off or whatever) of Glory Box in Hell Around The
Corner! and he also almost completely took the lyrics off
Karmacoma for Outcome... (well he was in the band so that's
ok i guess but still...)

i like his music but i'm wondering, is there something wrong
with him or do i get him wrong or what? =/

well in music at large there are about as many female
artists as male, just not as popular, plus not nearly as
many in electronic music.. but still i expected you to be
able to roll off a slew of names without even having to
think about it

the tricky "cover" isn't one; those songs came out around
the same time and they both heavily sample an isaac hayes
song called "help me love" (download it). he does hate to be
lumped in with portishead and especially geoff barrows
though; he thinks he's better. they all hate the trip-hop
term, too.

as for the massive attack thing, he wrote those lyrics (he
was involved w/ them for many years) and decided to reuse
them with his own music instead of theirs. kind of like how
trent reused the words to "suck" (written w/ pigface) for
the broken EP.

tricky does have major issues though.

nacmat: what pantalaimon said. there're 3 members of
portishead in the studio, i'm sure she doesn't just come up
w/ the lyrics and then sing them (with no vocal melody in
mind) when the whole track is done. i bet she's very
involved in the whole process, plus her album w/ rustin man.

tricky made karmakoma, so he just did another version in
overcome

both hell is round the corner and glory box took the music
from a nehne cherry track

tricky is far more important for music than portishead (I
love them both)
and they really sound very different
