Ive been having a lot of trouble sleeping lately, its not
Insomnia because when I do get to sleep ill sleep for quite
a while and if Im interuppted ill fall asleep like my life
depended on it.

But in the last 2 months or so its been getting worse, ill
get home lets say on an average of about 4:30am and end up
staying up till 6, and then it turned out to be 7 and then 8
and so on... until now its 10:49am while im writing this and
I feel as if I could maybe sleep in 30 minutes or
something.

When it gets to be this early and I havent slept, the light
starts coming in my room through the blinds in the basement
and I get a really strong feeling of frustration that makes
me really antsy so it makes trying to sleep even worse. I
dunno its really weird because once it gets to that point I
start finding things to make me stay awake pretty much, like
Ill read or listen to music and it just gets worse. Ive
tried staying up all the next day, which never fucking works
because when Im sleep deprived I feel sick and really out of
it. And Ive tried waking up early, only to find that most of
the time ill turn my alarm off and go back to sleep without
even knowing it until I wake up 8 hours too late or
something. WTF!?

I've been sleeping far too much recently. I got into the bad
habit of sleeping 8 hours (I know that's what your meant to
have, but I used to function fine on 6) a day over the
summer.

If you have difficulty sleeping, do some very tiring, but
not intense exercise- I recommend either swimming or hiking.
You're unlikely to sustain injury (if only muscle damage)
that will keep you awake, but will wear yourself out.
Seriously, there is no way you can stay awake the night
after a 2 hour plus swim :)

insomnia comes in many forms.

one form is where you can't feel asleep, but sleep well when
you do. anothe form is always waking up too early, being
still tired. etc.

so you do have insomnia.

Ceri: yeah i was thinking about excercise actually to help
it out, I already lift weights but I was thinking of doing
more active stuff as well.

qrter: hmm you think? If so drugs are not really my answer
for this kinda thing, I have a melatonin sitting by my bed..
I guess I could eat that and see what happens.. ha..
.although its totally not a drug.

I have had trouble getting to sleep all my life.

and I easily switch routines if I don't look out - I'll be
up all night and sleep overday.

it is also possible that your internal clock counts 25 hours
as a day - so your schedules shift.. and shift..

hmm I think your right about my schedule yes... indeed that
seems to be it.. I cant seem to get it to shift where I need
it to.. argh! its frustrating as hell.

I find myself with the same problem, you know just shifting
really easily into a crap sleeping pattern. This is why i
have had no sleep recently.

I find that with more intense exercise like weights, your
muscles tend to give out before you're really tired (as in
wanting to sleep)- doing a more gentle exercise for a longer
period of time is what really tires me out.

I often find that taking walks is really good for this, if
you live somewhere fairly hilly then i really do recommend
it!

Ceri; yeah thats why I like going sledding or for walks and
stuff. defenitly a great idea thanks.

Skink: the area i live in is not that hilly.... if I wanted
to go for a nice walk id have to go for a drive first.

Well to be honest i recommend it anyway, it is what i did
during the summer as i suffered from really bad insomnia
then and walking really helped me anyway. The only only
reason why i was thinking of hilly was because where i am at
the moment is very hilly.

i recently found out my sleeping troubles were because of
the shit pillows i had. got some new ones, and now i'm
sleeping like a baby :P

I'm not a big sleeperr rreally, but when I do nod off I
sleep like a log. I have no answerrs forr you REFLEX but I
don't mind it perrsonally. I'm used to it.

i had similar problems (mostly due to anxiety) and got
lorazepan (same family of drugs as valium) and it helped a
LOT. it's something you can take for a short period of time
without worrying too much about dependancy or long-term
effects.

I know valerian capsules help some people, but they smell
fucking awful. Don't taste of anything though, apparently.
If I can't sleep, alcohol usually solves that little
problem.

make up your own phrase, and repeat it until you mix up the
words.

I use:
I am not tired, I need to stay awake.

It actually works, believe it or not. I sort of "sing" it
inside of me, and repeat it non-stop until it gets really
complicated to say the phrase without fucking it up.

don't start taking sleeping pills, that's unhealthy,
unnatural sleep and it'll only make you more of a zombie.

again, bad idea.

one of the effects of the alcohol is that it's a very
superficial sleep - you'll not enter REM sleep, which is the
most envigourating part of the sleep-cycle.

so again, it'll zombify you.

I have trouble sleeping every day/night since i can
remember. I have learned to live with it. Sometimes it is
due to too much energy, sometimes it is because your mind is
so active and you can't turn it off.

A good tip someone once gave me is to use a very slow, tired
voice in your head whenever you think anything to yourself.
If you can keep this up for a few minutes then it can
sometimes do the trick.

Alcohol does work but you will wake up feeling a little shit
or worse depending on how much you drink.

I have problems getting to sleep when my mind starts playing
music. It's very hard to stop the music and it's extremely
frustrating when you really want to get to sleep. I find
that if you watch 15-30 mins of TV before you try and get to
sleep it helps.

What I normally do is keep a notepad or something next to
by bed and when my mind seems too active i just write down
any thoughts that come into my head. Kind of like a diary,
sometimes it is nonsense, sometimes it is fantasy things
like how would i spend 100,000,000,000 pounds, or how would
i design my dream vehicle.

It seems to help me anyway, i find there is no point just
lying there, listening to music, waiting to sleep when i
know is could be hours before it comes. Hope this helps you.

i dont have any troubles with my sleep
here's my sleeping schedule of the past few days:
saturday:7.30am - 5pm
sunday:6am - 2.30pm
monday:4.30am-9am

humans conform
to a 25 hour cycle.
Mars is closer to a 25 hour day
than earth,
so maybe

When I sleep, I usually wake up several times an hour for
pretty much no reason at all and then fall back to sleep.
It increases towards the morning until I wake up every 5
minutes or end up slipping in and out of sleep constantly.
It's not very pleasant but it's the only way I feel rested
in the morning and I end up having an enormous amount of
dreams so I suppose that's nice. I also wake up screaming a
lot... which probably isn't very healthy and probably annoys
the people in the other rooms. Yep...

Dreaming is great, i wish i had more dreams or could
remember having them. Are there noises in your room that
might be waking you up? I have no idea about the screaming
other than its sometimes caused by nightmares.

Oh, no... no noises in the room. I've slept semi-regularly
in at least 4 different places and it's always the same and
it's always been for as long as I can remember. For some
reason I feel like I'm making myself wake up... always feel
like I should be awake to turn off the alarm a moment before
it actually goes off so I keep waking up so I don't miss it.
The screaming is from nightmares or just strange things I
dream about. I find it's an effective way to pull myself
out of the dream when it gets uncomfortable - I always have
complete control of my actions in dreams.

Cool, so you know in the dream that it is a dream? I think
that is called lucid dreaming right? someone posted a topic
about it this last week sometime. I have always wanted to do
that but so far have never managed it, in my dreams i just
accept what goes on no matter how weird, one time i had a
dream that myself and everyone i have ever known all died in
a fireball when a meteor collided with Earth. About 30
seconds later we were all walking around again discussing
what just happened.

About 99% of the time I can tell. The other 1% of the time
deals with those dreams where I dream I wake up from a dream
- those are hard to catch, though when I wake up for real
the feeling is so different I feel it should be obvious...
reality is so much sharper and colder and harder that a
dream is - I think the feeling of dreaming is comparable to
having your head wrapped in some sort of thin cloth, if that
makes any sense... though recently (past few months) I think
the cloth has been there even while I'm awake and it's
getting thicker - it's a little disorienting or something.
I think the greatest dreams of all are the sharp, cold
dreams that are hard to tell from reality... the dreams
where your footsteps sound a little too crisp and the
feeling is a little to sharp to be a dream, but in the end
it is. Those are the dreams I wish for, but they're rare.

Yeh, i know what you mean about the cloth, actaull that is a

Can't say i have ever had one dream inside another but it
must be a little weird when finally do wake up. Do you find
that almost as soon as you wake up you start to forget what
the dream was about, and by the end of the day you can
hardly remember a single detail, no matter how good the
dream was.

Do you take any sort of sleeping medication just out of
interest?

As soon as I wake up I remember the dream pretty vividly -
enough to write it all down if I felt like doing that sort
of thing, but it happens so often that I'd never get to
sleep much if I did. After I go back to sleep and wake up
in the morning the dreams are mostly gone unless one was a
particularly interesting and impressionable dream, then it
stays. Sometimes random things will happen during the day
that will trigger me to vividly remember a dream, though I
can never remember exactly when I had it - that's always
nice.

And I take no medications at all.
