Jazz deserves its own thread - what jazz do you like?
Everyone knows Miles Davis and John Coltrane, but have you
heard Ahmed Abdul-Malik? How bout Nels Cline? How 'bout
Baikida Carroll?

(sorry for flogging emusic again but they do have
samples...)

What incredible jazz have you heard? Astonish me - post em
if ya got em.

great lp of piano only semi-improvised tunes.
great night-music.

Birmingham based 25 year old Soweto Kinch was born in London
and studied History at Oxford University. Kinch, who was
given his first saxophone aged nine, has worked with bands
including Jazz Jamaica All Stars and Nu Troop.
'Conversations with the Unseen' is his debut album and was
released on Dune Records in April 2003

an amazing album

one...

Art Blakey is great, i've got this album called New York
1957 which is real good, it starts with a mean drum lick and
just kicks in after that, he plays a mean drum.

I also like Herbie Hardcock, his jazz funk stuff is sweet,
the track wiggle waggle has been on my stereo a bit
recently. I like Miles Davis - in a silent way, bit like an
ambient jazz album, also monk and pretty much anything on
blue note

much going on,.. soooooo pretty

Ronny Jordan (now playing) does some funky chill out jazz,
kinda like saint germain

I got a wes montgomery cd i have yet to listen to,.. but
from what I've heard it's good

Weather Report, first and foremost... the greatest jazz band
ever, imo. i equally love all their albums, each of them is
so different and diverse... though now i'm more into their
early stuff, which is probably more like free jazz.

i really love jazz bassists, so a few of other jazz albums i
love are Miroslav Vitous' 'The Journey's End' and Wayne
Shorter's 'Alegria' (with John Patitucci on bass)... not to
mention Jaco Pastorius albums.

Metheny and Pastorius' 'Bright Size Life' is some of the
most amazing stuff i've ever heard!

Ok, I've got three letters for you:
EST.
Were at the London Jazz festival 2003, and they are so
wicked, I heard the webcast in a record shop the other day,
from the bbc radio 3 website (I don't have broadband, but
they do:) Yeah so basically listen to some EST.

Wow, some nice recommendations in this thread - I have to
check out Soweto Kinch and some more Mingus.

Always glad to see John McLaughlin mentioned - damn, I'm
gonna dig out my Mahavishnu disks today!

And EST sounds interesting too...

Anyone ever heard of a Finnish jazz band called Trio
Toykeat? I saw them at the Montreal jazz fest a few years
ago and they blew my mind. I just remembered that now - mind
blown, find Toykeat disks. Woulda done it sooner but my mind
was too blown.

The standards of course...

Stan Getz, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane on saxamaphones...

Thelonious Monk!!! Epistrophy is a fantastic piece, Blue
Monk, Mysterioso, etc, etc... he's like the IDM artist of
jazz along with Mingus

Dave Brubeck for different time signatures, Take Five and
Blue Rondo Ala Turk are both fantastic tracks

Chick webb is an AMAZING drummer, along with a few others

Art Tatum with his huge ass chords with stride piano.

Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Horace Silver on piano and
keys, especially Corea's electronica stuff is amazing

Miles Davis of course

Wynton Marsalis is quite good

Yoko Kano, did the soundtrack for Cowboy Bebop, check out
Piano Black and Tank! (the original, not the Luke Vibert
remix)

Singers... Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Mel Torme, etc,
etc

Latin... Antonio Carlos Jobim is one of my favorite
pianists...

Need more suggestions?

carl craig should be mentioned too. his innerzone orchestra
is the obvious album to hunt down, but everything he does
has some sort of jazz-influence in it. and the classic 'bug
in the bassbin' is a must. at 33rpm its jazz and at 45rpm
its jungle.

Just wait until the fully mastered version coming out in a
few months with the rest of my free mp3 CD =)

Allison Krauss has a fantastic voice, I'd recommend
downloding something from her, she did This Time the Dream's
On Me on the Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
soundtrack (which is good altogether for light jazz), but
has an incredibly voice
