Sanguine, I am really looking forward to that release! Work
it baby!

I also do believe that it can be seen as an impenetrrable
genrre to someone unfamiliarr with it, mainly because it is
so diverrse.

Hah! Kinda like electronica can be intimidatingly
impenetrable. I mean just when you think you know your stuff
someone namedrops an entire fucking label that specializes
in, say, minimalist ambient Bulgarian folktronica...

i love his Jazz Moods album with Curtis Fuller... the
counterpoint of Yusef Lateef playing the flute with Curtis
Fuller playing the trombone underneath... beautiful... the
track Metaphor is one of my favourite tracks of all time...

the funny part is that the majority of these names are from
the Bop and Post Bop era... i started with the Avant-garde
shit, and then moved backwards... and now i realize that i
didn't get it proper-like (and i'm slowly moving back-in
from the proper angle)... and i really haven't gotten into
the sweet swing yet either... like i said: tip of the
iceberg

...oh yeah... and i forgot Bud Powell (pianist)...

> JAZZ is like IDM in so many ways

you mean it started out being very original and inventive
but gradually settled into elevator music ?

offline Anus_Presley on 2003-11-29 15:50 [#00970453]

The bonus of IDM howeverr is that only interrnet
geeks like it so you can always logon and ask, but
only 40 yearr old men who don't know how to use
computerrs like Jazz.

jazz is impenetrable because it demands attention that
people who aren't accustomed to it are unable to give...
there is a structure that plays a large role in ones
appreciation of the music that most people don't understand
because they simply aren't around it enough...

i won't deny that there is a part of me that takes pride in
knowing lots of shit... but i also know that there is a part
of me that just wants to help people know more about
music... i think the world would be a better place if people
listened to more than just fuckin dave brubeck or smooth
jazz.... or simple early jazz... or simple pop swing... if
someone else were to produce a list as large as the one i
just did i would read it and try to take something from
it... i don't want to come across as someone who thinks too
highly of himself... i just want people to consider all this
beautiful music that people devoted their lives to...

well. as far as miles davis goes it's all about 'on the
corner' and 'bitches brew'. but we all know those. *shrugs*
always been a thelonius monk man, m'self. i'm not as into
jazz as i would like to be. someday i'll take the time to
better familiarize myself with it all. there's just so
much...and it's all so good. =]

What do you jazz purists think of some turntabilists
adopting the term "the new jazz" to describe their music?

jazz is just about the only genre of music that can irritate
me to death.

haven't heard enough to really say that, though...

btw, fleetmouse: i remember you mentioned Joni Mitchell's
Hejira as one of your favorite albums. what else would you
recommend?

the only Joni's album i've heard so far is Mingus, and i
quite like it.

got Mahavishnu Orchestra's 'Inner Mounting Flame' a couple
of days ago...

this album is AMAZING.

frankly, i just cannot believe it was recorded more than 30
years ago.

Nothing is as good as Hejira. It weaves a spell. But also
see Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, Ladies of the Canyon
(folkier but still nice), Hissing of Summer Lawns mostly for
the track The Jungle Line, and mmmmmmmah Blue I guess, which
everyone likes but never really bowled me over.

Too bad the second album with the same lineup is a little
too tight and disciplined. Inner Mounting Flame is so
reckless and wild!

You know who has some of that Inner Mounting Flame energy is
Nels Cline. He plays like an excellent tight player who is
trying out something new every time he plays, like it's all
first take, first thought and not rehearsed to death. The
Nels Cline Singers album Instrumentals kicks ass. He does
shit with people all over the place.

Awesome.

Anyway, my favourite jazz album is now Out to Lunch
by Eric Dolphy.

Someone should start a klezmer thread.

Ever heard Don Byron's album of Mickey Katz's music? It's
jazz klezmer that slams harder than most metal bands.

God bless!

Thelonious Monk is quite enjoyable thus far, i am listening
to "well you needn't" right now. Your way of describing him
was quite interesting so i grabbed a bunch of his stuff!
Awesome!! I believe this is the most useful thread i have
stumbled across in a while!

I welcome all suggestions!

Thanks everyone for your opinions and for broadening my
horizons!

Miles davis is by far my favourite, i'm listening to bitches
brew right now and i figured i checked out xltronic. john
coltrane is very nice, and don't forget Sun Ra and Albert
Ayler.

Ive been getting a littel bit into the rap game, and i find
it to be very similar to jazz
